I nodded and lead the way up the stairs. It was too flights before I headed down a hallway, glancing at the room numbers. Finally...
"Here we are." I said before unlocking the door and holding it open for Larissa.
Inside there were two beds, one on each side, with their own dresser and desk for doing paperwork. There were also two sets of screens, allowing for privacy when changing. There was a single bathroom, with a shower and sink and all that; as well as a small counter space for preparing simple foods. The perch I had bought was already on one side of the room, next the bed that had my luggage piled on it; the falconing glove and shoulder pad. Larissa's luggage was on the other bed.
On the counter space was the familiar food we has just bought. I picked up a bowl and mixed the foods I had gotten for my little crow and set it down, and him on the counter.
I watched him blink at the bowl, before hopping over to it and perching on the edge, starting to peck at the first first. He was so tiny and fuzzy; almost fragile looking. Gossamer, even.
"That's a good name." I said to myself. "Gossamer. What do you think, little guy?" I asked, holding out my hand. The baby crow paused to look up at me and peeped, flapping his little wings happily. He likes it!
I grinned and leaned against the counter, before a can caught my eye. I glanced over at it.
"... Did you seriously get your familiar cat food?" I asked her, before putting my hand over my mouth. "Nevermind. Nevermind." Gods Leo, could you be more rude?

She followed him to their room, a little puffed from the two sets of stairs. Their room number was number 31. She walked inside when he opened the door and looked around. It was medium sized, not too small and cramped, which she was pleased about. She'd been used to having her own room back home at each parent's house, so sharing with someone else was new and foreign to her. But she could deal.
Rissy took out the sleepy white kitten from her pocket and cuddled her some more, making little noises of affection and love to her familiar. Kittens were just the cutest! Yes they were~. "Come on sweetheart. Let's get you settled in" she sang softly, petting her.
She had no problem with sharing the bathroom since inspecting it showed it had a lock on the door. Larissa's bed was on the right side of the room. It looked comfy enough, though it was smaller than she was used to. But it would fit her and her cat companion and that's all she needed. While Leo busied himself taking care of his familiar, she looked after hers. She started to set up the kitten's food and water dishes and cat litter box, making sure to put the litter in the tiled bathroom where it wouldn't be a problem. She set up her cat scratcher at the end of the bed and sprinkled her toys around the floor on her side of the room. Rissy heard Leo talking to his small, fluffy crow, while she herself talked to her own bundle of joy. She showed the kitten where everything was. She was walking over to see what Leo was doing with his crow, when he looked at a can of kitten food and commented. "Huh? Yeah, I got her kitten food. What's wrong with that? She's a kitten. She needs proper food for her age and weight, and variety so she doesn't get bored" she replied. "We've always had cats, so I know how to care for them. I miss my cats back at mum's place. But she's taking good care of them" she looked at her baby happily "I can't believe I was lucky enough to get a cat! The stars must be aligned in our favour. I still don't know what I'm going to call her; my cute little snow poff"

I stroked Gossamer's head a bit more as she spoke about keeping pets at home. I sighed as I turned, watching her and her kitten. She seemed so happy with the little white kitten as her familiar.
"It's... " I started, then sighed. "Familiars are not normal animals. They're not pets either." I said, finally. "They're a lot more intelligent then most of their kin. My mother had a cat; a Mau. That cat saw standard cat food as an insult to her palate, and would claw up any that offered it to him. Generally, if you can manage to give a familiar non-processed food, go for it. They'll be a lot happier." I remembered a kid who tried to feed my mom's Mau a can of catfood. I shuddered, remembering the kid having to be taken to a healer because of how badly that cat had scratched up his arms.
I glanced down at the kitten. "But since she is a kitten, I can't really argue too much. They do need a specific diet to grow healthy. But she may not like it much, I will warn you. If she doesn't eat it, you may have to get her something else. Don't try to force her to eat something she don't want. Especially if her mother was a feral cat and she's used to the food they eat. And you'll know what she thinks when she starts to talk, I assure you." I glanced back to see how Gossamer was doing. The baby crow was pecking at a sunflower seed, trying to get the shell open. I gently leaned down an cracked it open for him.
"There you go, little guy." I said as Gossamer pecked the sed right out of the shell, then started eating a blueberry. "My little Gossamer."

Rissy listened to him talk, petting her kitten's head and back while he spoke. "Oh, I didn't know that. Thank you" she said "The mother cat talked to me before, when I was getting her. But I've only been able to sense emotions from the kitten. You seem to know more about these things than me" she nodded "Ah, okay. I'll try to remember that. I'll try her out on the normal food first, and we'll see how she goes. But if she doesn't like it, I'll get her some other foods instead. I wish I'd known that before I bought her the stuff, but they do sell it so some familiars must like cat food as well" she reasoned. "Anyway, we'll see" She smiled at the kitten, who was now lying on her back while playing with Rissy's fingers and hand, grabbing it in her paws, kicking it and nomming it.
"I think I'll call her Snow Poff, Poff for short. Have you ever played the game, Undertale? It's really cute and fun. There's little balls of snow in it called snow poffs and I just think that suits her" she enthused, grinning as the kitten wriggled to get down. She crouched down and put her on the floor. "Oh, are you hungry? Here, here's your food" she placed her in front of her food dish that was filled with dry kitten biscuits. Snow Poff sniffed at them curiously for a while before starting to eat them. Her emotions reflected happiness and that she thought the food was yummy. Rissy laughed softly "Guess some cats aren't that fussy~ She's enjoying it" She heard him speak to his little chick.
"Gossamer huh? That's a cute name. It reminds me of spider silk" she said matter of factly. "Anyway, I have to call my mum, do you mind if I just take the call here?" she pulled her mobile phone out of her pocket.

"I'm... not familiar with that game." I said, looking back at her a moment. "Is that a video game, I'm guessing?" I wondered. "My family was full of mages, and my mother had the odd property of exploding electronics. So I haven't got to use them much when I was at home. Usually I toyed with them at friends places. Thankfully he showed me how to work with them properly. Infact, the laptop I had, I had to keep at said friend's place to keep it from going up in sparks."
Now she was asking if she could call her mom. I shrugged. "Go ahead."
Speaking of my laptop, I wandered over to my bag and pulled it out of my bag. I set it onto the desk on my side of the room; it was black with Republic of Gamers on the back, as well as it's fancy ASUS logo. I heard peeping and I hurried back over to gossamer. "No, no, I didn't forget you." I cooed to him.

She nodded "Yeah, it's a PC game. It's only small but it's charming" she listened to his explanation about electronics. "Wow. That's interesting. It sounds like your family would be fun to be around" she smiled. "It would be a pain having all the electric stuff blow up though. We rely so much on electricity for everything these days. Well, most people do. Not to mention computers are expensive. Smart move to keep it at your friend's house"
She sat down on the end of her bed and relaxed a bit. He didn't seem to mind her making a call in his earshot so she started to put in the number for her mum's phone. Snow Poff was still chowing down on her bikkies and Rissy casually watched Leo and the familiars as the phone rang next to her ear. A woman picked up
"Oh, hi mum. I'm just ringing to let you know how things are going. Yeah, I'm fine. We got our familiars first of all and I got a cat! She's white and I named her Snow Poff. Hee hee, yeah, I thought so too. Mm...no, the room's pretty spacious. It's not huge but it's not cramped either. I'm gonna decorate my side of it with posters and stuff. Yeah, the beds are comfortable. Smaller than my queen size at yours. I'm sitting on it right now though and it feels pretty comfy. Probably gonna put a different bedspread on it though, just to make it feel like home. My room mate? Uh, yeah. They're really nice...um..." she paused, frowning as she glanced at Leo. "Yeah, her name's Leonie. She's really nice. I think we'll get along fine"
Larissa continued her phone call, letting her mother believe that her dorm mate was another female, since she knew both her parents would hit the roof if they found out she was rooming with a boy. What they didn't know won't hurt them. And Larissa liked Leo so far. He hadn't been arrogant or a d**k or anything, and she didn't want to complain and end up with someone she didn't like, so she decided to give him a fair chance to prove himself as a decent person while living together.
Snow Poff finished her food and took a drink, then washed her face with her paw. She started exploring the room, wandering around the floor and sniffing everything. Rissy could feel her inquisitive mind and playfulness.

Held out my hand and Gossamer nuzzled it with his poofy little white head, squeezing his blue eyes happily. I felt that Gossamer was done eating, so I scooped him up into my arms and took him over to the perch.
In the center was a round bowl like shape, with two long rods which he could perch on if he wanted too. The whole thing was supported by a tall pole and stand. I put a small cloth in the center and tucked it in, and set Gossamer down in the center. He peeped and flapped his wings, feeling he new space. I think it likes it. But it wasn't long before he urged me to pick him back up again, and I cuddled him to my chest.
It was then I heard Larissa say something about a Leonie. I paused to look at her for a moment, raising an eyebrow. I then shook my head and sat down on the bed.

Larissa chatted with her mum for a good 15 minutes more before hanging up, looking happy. She put her phone back in her dress pocket and looked around. She saw Poff playing with her jingle ball, swatting it around, and giggled. "You're so cute~! I know this isn't the first time I'm going to say that" she chuckled, sitting on the floor and petting the kitty, playing with her gently. She looked at Leo, who seemed to be just sitting around on the bed. "What are you doing? Aren't you going to unpack? I'm gonna start unpacking and get some of my stuff ready so it feels more like home" she said cheerfully, getting up and unzipping her green tote bag that was lying on her bed. She ignored the raised eyebrow and questioning look he had given her while she was on the phone. It was easier not to have to explain. She started to take things out of her bags, sorting through them. She started putting her clothes into the dresser, and her bathroom things in one pile. Larissa felt embarrassed when she realised she had to get her underwear out in front of a boy. They were bigger than usual girl's underwear and they were cute or had pretty bows and such. She tried to hide them as she subtly took them out, holding them against her chest as she stood with her back facing Leo. She tried making conversation in hopes he wouldn't notice anything. "So, uh, what sort of magic are you studying here? I'm learning to be a crystal witch, but I only know the very basics. I went to a normal school so I've only been able to practice my magic in my free time" she explained, grabbing her pads and panty liners out of her bag as well. She blushed faintly. This...was kinda awkward. Having an idea, she got a bunch of clothes and tried hiding the pads and undies in them. Then picked up the pile. Hmm. Um...should she go to put her pads in the bathroom cupboard under the sink...or try to subtly put her undies away in the top drawer of the dresser? She hesitated, unable to make up her mind. Why did she have to room with a boy, again? She really hadn't thought this through!

"Unpack?" I said. "Oh, right."
I started to unpack myself. "I practice Light Magic and Wind Magic." I said. I saw she seeming to try and hide something; I decided to leave her be. I just unpacked all my things, not caring that she saw my boxers in various patterns. I piled my clothes ontop of the dresser, and folded them up and put them away.
By the time I was done, my side of the room was homey. I had all of my clothes put away, my toothbrushes and toothpaste all in the bathroom, a faintly glowing globe on my desk next to my computer. Scrolls went up on my side of the room, showing maps pictures of various animals. Some of them even moved. Into the drawers of the desk went basic school supplies; parchment and pens.
I fnally sat down in my chair and leaned back with a sigh; I had changed into a pair of pajama pants, not caring for a night shirt. I ran my fingers through my hair before pulling something out of my bag; last thing. It was a pouch, and I empried it's content into my hand.
It was a bunch of polished gemstones. Amythyst, Blue Topaz, quartz, diamond, ruby and Garnet. I looked at them a moment before the gemstones started to arrange themselves into the form of an elegant scorpion, the gemstones hovering in place. a blue body with a purple center, white legs that fade to red at the tips, and deep garnet pincers and tail. I smiled at it as the gemstone scorpion scitterd up my arm to rest on my shoulder. I don't know how anyone could call this little gemstone critter gross. She was a gift from my great-grandfather long before I got Gossamer.

She listened to what type of magic he studies. "Oh, that's good. Light and wind magic are sure to be nice. Not like some of the scary dark magic I've heard about. Do people really still practice necromancy in this day and age? It's so creepy" she shuddered, walking to the bathroom and sneakily putting her feminine products in the cupboard under the sink. She put her toothbrush, face cream, body moisturiser etc. in the bathroom cabinet on her side of it so things wouldn't get mixed up.
Rissy came back and quickly put the underwear in the top drawer, glad Leo wasn't paying any attention to her. She didn't want him to see her huge bras either! He was busy unpacking his own stuff, thankfully! So she managed to avoid any embarrassing situations or questions. She put her school supplies from her backpack into the desk that was provided; a lot of cute, girly pens and scented, cute erasers. A ruler with dolphins and glitter inside it in a blue liquid, a pack of scented highlighters, cutesy notebooks with flowery paper, and other stuff that screamed 'feminine'!
She didn't have much in the way of decorations or belongings. Just a few bits of jewellery and some make up with a hand mirror. She also had her crystal wand, but that never left her pocket unless she needed it for something. Once she was finished, her side of the room still looked rather plain, but she would fix that later. At least she had the basics. Her white laptop, which was sitting on her desk, was decked out with stickers, a cute case cover with a cartoon unicorn on it, and a pink glittery mouse and keyboard. It was a lesser known brand but it seemed to suit her fine. She picked up Snow Poff and sat down on the bed to cuddle and pet her. Rissy looked up at the sound of gems clattering together gently and saw Leo tipping them out of a small pouch. She watched them form into a scorpion and crawl about. "I like that scorpion more than the ones in the Familiar room" she commented, stroking Snow Poff gently. "Well, now that we're all unpacked, what do you want to do? I don't think we have classes today since it's orientation for the new students"

She soon made a comment about liking the the scorpion on my shoulder a lot more then the ones in the familiar room. I glanced at her.
"Have you ever actually looked at them?" I asked as the scorpion on my shoulder curled their tail and clicked their pincers together. "Or do you just follow the stigma that insects are gross without knowing anything about them?" I said, tilting my head to the side, shrugging my shoulder.
I lifted my hand to my shoulder, the back of my hand up; she skittered onto it. "My great-grandfather had a scorpion bigger the some buildings. Gentlest creature you could find, and had a fondness for all kinds of baked goods. My Great grandmother? A bat large enough to be able to pick someone up and fly away with them-- but ate nothing but fruit."
I looked at the gemstone scorpion skittering up my arm. "It's a... pet peeve of mine." I said with a sigh. "Some people never see the beauty in things because they never really look. I've had people call animals that have been in my family for years and call them slimy or gross or dangerous, without getting to know them at all." I heard a peeping and I picked up Gossamer, who was nuzzled up by my leg. "And I know that if Gossamer wasn't white, he likely would get the same treatment. He may still, being a crow." I held him up, looking at him. "And there's... very little I can do about it."
Then she asked me what we were to do. I shrugged. "I don't know. Is there anything out in town to do, perhaps?" I asked as I opened the bag again and the gemstone scorpion skittered down into it, before falling to individual stones once again.

She pouted at his tone when asking her questions "What do you mean? Of course I've looked at them! That's how I know that they're gross! Bugs and slimy things are just unpleasant. I know enough about them to know that much" She stroked Snow Poff while she talked, cradling the kitten. Kittens were definitely soooo much nicer than bugs.
She frowned when he told her about his grandparents' familiars, not really sure what to think of that. It sounded pretty scary since they were so big. "Oh, well, that still sounds kinda scary. I don't like little scorpions so I doubt I'd like a big one, even if it was gentle" she shuddered "And bats can carry so many diseases. Maybe back in their day they didn't know that much. Huge bats sound terrifying too. Maybe your family just likes weird things"
She listened to him go on and her frown lessened a little. "Well, maybe people don't want to get too close to some creatures out of revulsion. Certain creatures have bad reputations, and it's just hard to see them any other way than being icky. I'm afraid if I look closer at them they'd just creep me out even more!" she said, scrunching her face up and closing her eyes. She shook her head, as though shaking off the idea of looking at bugs and slimy things. She looked at him "Getting to know them? You mean like familiars? I don't know if I could. It sounds...hard. I'd be scared. What if the scorpion stung me? Or what if a bug crawled in my ear?! And I heard that spiders nest in your hair. I don't know if I could tolerate that even if it was my familiar"
She looked at Gossamer. "Well, maybe you're wrong about him. He's pretty cute, and I think he would be even if he was black. The only reasons people don't like crows is because they peck out eyes and they're known for being the servants of evil witches. But if people see Gossamer with you, his reputation will probably be fine. Since you don't look evil and you have nice magic powers instead of the evil ones"
She blinked when he replied to her question about what to do "Umm, I don't really know. I don't live in this town so I don't know what there is to do here. Maybe we could explore the campus though, get to know our way around. I don't like getting lost when I'm trying to find my way to classes" She glanced at her laptop "Or we could just stay here and use the Academy's Wi-Fi to do internet stuff"

"If it's your familiar." I said. "They wouldn't even consider the idea. Familiars don't like it when their mages feel pain. Same with the mages. Last time I saw one of my parents feel their familiar getting hurt they flew into a rage." I said as I listened to her. "And spiders do not nest in people's hair. It's not a good secure place to hide one's children, especially with the kind of chemicals humans use in their hair."
I found myself just kinda looking at her a long moment, feeling kind of irritated. Really, did she know what she was talking about? Did she?
Frustration made me get up; I didn't bother putting on a shirt or shoes as I strode out of the dorm. Such animals were more threatened by humans then they were to us.
I found myself heading down the stairs, and Gossamer was peeping and nuzzling me. Gods, he's so fluffy and adorable. Oh... I know. I want to see if I can get myself another familiar.
Down the halls I went with purpose, just to see that the last pair of people were leaving the familiar room. I strode past the teacher who was standing there; she had a long, gorgeous rainbow python wrapped around her shoulder, and she was stroking the snake with affection.
I strode in and looked around. Gossamer went quiet, closing his eyes; and I turned to look around as I closed my eyes and felt for a song. There were quite a few less baby animals, but a song called to me; just as I had hoped; I wandered over to see a momma bat, a large flying fox, with one baby remaining in her fur.
May I, Madame?" I asked, and she gave me a gentle smile before opening her wings, allowing me to take the baby bat into my arms. I cuddled her, the little bat, and bowed to the mother. "Thank you."
I then turned and left the room, grinning down at both Gossamer and my new fluffy and fuzzy little friend. She had a cute little muzzle and big ears, with a pair of large blue eyes that could melt anyone's heart. So cute!

"Oh" she said, "I didn't know that" She didn't know much at all about familiars, since Snow Poff was her first one, and she was still getting to know their special bond. "I guess familiars are different than normal bugs in that way. But...I still prefer fluffy, cute animals to bugs or toads" Her mind was pretty much made up on that. It might take something to change it. Rissy was greatly relieved to hear spiders didn't nest in people's hair. "That's a relief. I don't know where I heard that myth, but I'm really glad it's not true" she smiled.
Snow Poff got out of her lap and started sniffing around the carpet, digging it with her front paws. Larissa got up and moved her into the cat litter in the bathroom, where the kitten successfully did her business. Rissy picked her up and nuzzled her, praising her happily "Good giiirrrlll! You got it right" she kissed her and the kitten purred, soaking in her master's praise.
She walked back out of the bathroom and saw Leo getting up. Curious about where he was going, she decided to follow him "Um, you do know you're in your pajamas, right?" she giggled softly. "You don't want to put on a shirt?" She followed him to the familiar room, holding her kitten close to her heart. Why was he going back to the familiar room? She was confused. Was he going to try and swap Gossamer for another familiar? That couldn't be it. The bond between she and Poff was really strong. Getting separated wasn't an option for either of them. So it couldn't be that. But then. What was he doing here?
She gave the rainbow python a wide berth, stepping as far away from it as possible as she waited out in the hall. She protectively covered Snow Poff with her hand, eying the python nervously. It looked big enough to eat her little familiar in one gulp. Leo came back out of the room and Larissa's eyes fell straight on the second fuzzball he was carrying. It had the cutest little face, a funny adorable nose, and big soft ears "Oh my gosh, what is that? It's so cute!" She walked over for a closer look and that's when she noticed the wings. "Uh...u-uh..is that a bat?" she hesitated, teetering on her feet as though not sure if she wanted to come closer or step back. She had to admit it was really cute. But...but..."What kind of bat is that? I didn't know bats could be that cute. It...it's adorable" she looked at her. "Is it actually a bat?"

Larissa had followed me back to the familiar room, it seems; I had been so single-minded on my quest back here that I hadn't realized that she had been following. Perhaps I was supposed to return? But as I felt the second mind nestle up to my own, I didn't argue as I got a warm fuzzy feeling; love.
She seemed really eager to see what kind of creature I had returned with; yet when she realized that the little ball of fuzz in my hand had bat-wings, she stopped, hesitating; taken aback by that the adorable little creture in my hand was a bat.
"What's wrong?" I asked with a smirk. "I thought you said you knew what a bat actually looked like." I lifted the little one to my face, where she crawled around on my palm to look at me. "An Osarene flying fox, native to the Oserene Dynasty. One of the few species that are omnivorous, and can eat both fruit and insects." I held out a finger and she climbed along it, before swinging downward and dangling from my finger, wings wrapped around herself. She looked around; at me, the teacher, and at Larissa.
She, particularly, didn't seem to like what Larissa said; she hid her head in her wings. I understood, and Gossamer started peeping unhappily in my other hand.
"Did you just seriously called my second familiar an it?" I asked Larissa. "How would you like to be called an it?"
"What's the problem, you two?" A voice piped up, and it was the teacher from before. She still had her Rainbow boa wrapped around her shoulder, the snake lazily looking on at us.
"My roommate insulted my second familiar." I aid unhappily. I carefully took the little bat and cradled her and gossamer to my chest to keep them warm. "Her name is..." I thought a second. What would I name such an adorable fuzzy beauty? She had those intense blue eyes. "Sapphire."
The teacher looked at Larissa a moment, before sighing and turning to me. "You look like someone from a magical family, yes?"
I nodded.
"Go easy on her until after she takes Familiar care." The teacher said to me. "I don't think your roommate has much experience with magic and familiars."
I felt like sulking, but I knew that it wasn't what a mature man should do. Then again, she had insulted Sapphire mere moments after I had gotten the adorable fuzzy bat! "Fine. For now."
I paused to look at the teacher. I reached out with my free hand, and her snake flicked his tongue in and out before letting me pet them. This made the teacher smile. "What's your name, miss?" I asked of the teacher.
"Isabella Taylor." She said proudly. "It seems Iri likes you."
"They are a beautiful snake. Rainbow Python?" I asked her.
Indeed!" She said, grinning as she struck a pose with the snake.
