Beth might have taken his words for flirtation and blushed or put an arm around him. It was always strange to be complimented, especially by someone she'd barely met. But at the mention of Brian, Beth's expression lit up and she murmured, "That's Brian, all right. He's a helper."

Then she blinked and realized that Brian and Lex had taken down an alligator by themselves and the color drained from her face. "Is he okay? Did he get hurt? Do you know where he is? Was it hard?" She pulled her hand from his and covered her mouth.

Misha was clearly not her only cherished friend.

Beth looked patently relieved to hear that Brian was all right. She envisioned him with the alligator slung over his shoulder like a caveman and was privately entertained, but didn't convey this to her companion. Next item of business was to find Brian and make sure he really was okay. She wondered at Lex's estimation. Every fight was dangerous, especially one against an alligator.

She slipped her shoes back on her feet and stood. "It was good seeing you again. I'm glad you came back safely!" There was genuine relief in her voice, but she was clearly distracted. "See you around?" Without entirely waiting for his answer, she gave him a half wave and wandered off, looking around, searching for someone.
