Jordan took meticulous care with the folding of the candy bag, handing over one candy as though absentmindedly, and did not move to take Tiny back yet. "Thank you," he answered. "I will, if I run into trouble." He meant it, and sounded maybe a little surprised that he meant it. "I had a foxfire I'd named, but. The mass escape, a while ago." He didn't get any further into detail. They both knew what happened to minipets that stayed out too long. "It'll be a relief to be able to keep a closer eye on her."

"Maybe," Taym said after another pause, "there's someone down here who can be talked to make sure she stays put until you get it taken care of." And sure, it was generally frowned upon that hunters insisted on treating the specimens like pets, but there were those who sympathized with the stressors of hunter life even among Life division, and there was, besides, a pile of money burning a hole in his metaphorical pocket, not that Jordan needed to know that part. And maybe he wouldn't do anything at all. Maybe it was just an offer made to see how Jordan reacted. He wasn't sure himself. "I'm down here a lot," he added, handing her back over almost reluctantly. "I'll keep an eye on her too, when I'm here."

"I'd appreciate your help," Jordan admitted, taking Tiny back and cradling her gently, rubbing absentmindedly behind her ear as she shoved her head imperiously against his fingers. "If there's any bribery involved, I'll pay for it, of course." He looked back down at the sunekosuri, the indulgent smile reappearing on his face. "I always had pets around, growing up," he said. "It's nice to have something to take care of."

He did not inform him that to Taym finding ways to get rid of money was a constant struggle. If it did involve bribery Taym would inevitably lie about it in an attempt to put a dent in the dangerous positive balance in his bank account, an ever-present specter of fear and bad choices. "It is," he said, after a lull during which he processed the complicated fact that he once again felt compelled to like Jordan despite himself. "It's generally a lot easier to take care of something else than it is to take care of yourself," he observed tonelessly.

A quick, darting, understanding glance, and Jordan looked back down at Tiny before either of them could be forced to acknowledge any kind of mutual understanding about themselves or one another, an avoidance less conscious than instinctive. Pride was what he had left, what perhaps they both had left, and any connection would wither and die without it. Pretending not to care was the common thread, and allowing the pretense retained a dignity that clothed both men in their public selves. "She's always happy to get out for a walk," Jordan observed, neutrally, gently.

His reaction was possibly the best Taym could have hoped for, but it had been more than he'd meant to say anyway. Abruptly, he started moving in that particularly brisk and efficient way that indicated wrapping up a shift, all busy hands. "Better get on that, then, if she's only got an hour," he said roughly. "I'll keep an eye on her, make sure she gets her walks when you can't be here. And I'll talk to someone."

Jordan nodded, a quick, sharp motion that was an echo and an acknowledgement of Taym's efficient, businesslike manner. "Thanks," he said, calm, not quite impersonal, and turned toward the end of the row. "Let me know. You've got my number." He paused, looked briefly sideways, almost at Taym without making full eye contact. "I'll owe you," he said, half a promise, and, "she likes you." Oblique and gentle. "I keep her treats with my kit." With that, he nodded again, slightly, and strode off down the row, cradling his pet against his chest and not looking back.
