Perhaps she was the luckier of the two, having been more schooled in the evil's that walked the Kawani lands. Yet it could also be considered a curse. She'd probably have preferred to be like this stallion in his ignorance of how some Soquili treated others. But... she'd not wish it upon him to learn the ugly truth! It would probably destroy the poor thing's mind just trying to comprehend it. If it was at all possible, she didn't want him to suffer any such evils. Or knowledge of them.

"Honestly, neither can I. But... that's what happened. And I avoid those responsible like the plague." She'd even be willing to find the fire to burn them from the land, if she could! But that was a little... extreme. And it was not in her nature. As much as she could wish for it.

Dark Side smiled hearing that. "I'm glad he is alright, then. It's a terrible feeling, being helpless to do anything for a loved one." Maybe he was starting to rub off on her already. She found herself lightly nosing about the grass in a search for seeds, though a giggle escaped. "It does seem like that, doesn't it?" Oh she could just picture this stallion pressing his head firmly against another to try and 'heal' them! The silly thing! He was, really quite cute. And... handsome.

Interesting. Yet not completely surprising. "It doesn't sound like they would be the best place to go back to." It was more than likely they wouldn't notice him, she thought. She glanced around, a small smile forming. "The mountains are rather nice, though. Maybe this is a good place?" For both of them, perhaps.

Sanguine had been rather sheltered from the darkness in the world, protected by the strength of his parents. His mother was a fearsome alicorn mare, who was not afraid of anything or anyone. "I would avoid them too." He would definitely, definitely avoid them. Soquili like that were horrible, and he could only imagine it, imagine how dark one had to be to do such an awful thing. He was terribly distressed by it. She seemed like she'd really been changed by it, and he was sorry for it. Still... she'd made the best of it, it seemed.

When she spoke of his father, he smiled slightly. "My father wasn't that hurt, really." Not hurt enough that he really had needed Sanguine to heal him, but at the time, when he'd been a foal, he'd definitely thought that his father was in dire danger. "It is, at that. A terrible thing. But fortunately, no one that I love is in danger now." They were all safely within their own territory, and he could wander back if he really wanted to.

His parents were very much in love, and he was rather aware of the fact that they'd probably try to pay him attention, but would most likely end up lost in each other as usual. "It's not so bad, really. Knowing that they still love each other so much is nice." A bit comforting, actually. "It's a place with birds," he pointed out. "Birds who like seeds." Was there a type of bird who didn't like seeds?

She sighed, giving Sanguine a sheepish look. "I do try and avoid them, but sometimes it's hard to tell if a Soquili is one of them or not." Dark Side held her tongue in admitting she'd had a brief moment of thinking him to be a Kalona of some sort! But that was definitely not the case. For which, she was glad. She was growing to rather like this stallion. And she barely even knew him! Maybe she was just lonelier than she'd thought?

"That is good. I tried, once, when I was a filly still, to heal a broken leg for my father's herd. But I wasn't able to do it. He had to help." Or rather, do it for her. And this was before she'd even lost half her horn! "Healing was just not my strong point, apparently. But flying... " A slightly wistful look crossed her features as Dark Side glanced towards the sky. "I may not be as strong as my mother in flight, but I can appreciate her love of feeling the wind against her wings." Except... her mother had been haughty and refused to accept that her daughter could not fly like their kind. Which was why she'd spent most of her time with her father's Uni herd. At least they were sweet natured.

"It is nice to know that." And lucky them! How nice must it be to care so much for another like that? It was something she secretly wished for. Dark Side laughed, a sweet sound, as she looked at Sanguine. And the birds. "Yes. A place with birds. And maybe a place a bat could like." She added.

"Well, if I encounter anyone like that, I'll be sure to let you know," Sanguine told Dark Side, totally unaware that she had ever thought him anything like them. He, of course, was an alicorn, and never mind that he didn't have a horn! He'd managed to find some seeds, and the birds were happily pecking away at them. "Woah, slow down little guy, if you swallow that too quickly, you might choke." The one bird was being a little too enthusiastic, there, and he really didn't want to end up trying to rescue a choking bird. ... Did birds choke? Was that a thing that they did?

As Dark Side told her story, Sanguine made sympathetic sounds. Yes, that was exactly what he'd gone through, being unable to heal anyone. But she had had a horn! How terrible for her. "Is it like that when you're young, do you think? Being unable to properly heal? Or is it just a function of being an alicorn?" Either would probably explain it, he supposed.

He watched her, taking note of that wistful expression, and wondering what it must have been like to not fly as well as her mother. He couldn't fly quite so well as his mother, but he certainly could fly as well as his father, no problem. Maybe all crossbreeds suffered from this. It did seem likely. "It would be impossible not to love flying, I think. Now, if you were to lose the ability to fly, that would be the worst thing in the world. It really would."

And he never wanted to experience it. Not ever. "Bats who like fruit?" he inquired, smiling faintly as he glanced over at her. "Fruit that you'd have to go a little westward to find."

"If you encounter anyone like that," Dark Side countered, a hint of concern in her tone as she attempted to stress her meaning. "You run as fast as you can the other way." He'd surely be easy prey for the likes of Them! And... she didn't want him to be their victim. "Seriously, run away." She snorted, eying the enthusiastic bird with amusement. That one reminded her of her familiar companion. Risk of choking included.

It was strange, how easy she seemed to be able to talk with this stallion, whom she'd barely even met! He was... a good listener. Or maybe it was just his sweet nature? Either way, Dark Side had to admit, she was enjoying talking with him about things she normally wouldn't admit to anyone easily. "I... I am not sure. It might be? But even as I got older, I still was never anything like my father. He said it was because I was an alicorn and not pure uni, like him." But he'd never frowned upon her for it. In fact, he still accepted her and loved her dearly. Dark Side just couldn't stand seeing the pity on their faces whenever she was around them. Which was why she left the herd to find her own place.

The mare gasped at the thought. "I could not even imagine not being able to fly! I may suck at it to begin with, but to lose it completely?" She shook her head. "No thank you!" It wasn't her fault her mother was biased and expected a perfect little wind mare. Hah!

If it were possible for her to blush - or discern the blush with her dark coloring - Dark Side was guilty of it. He'd totally caught her with that one. Her ears fell back in manner that clearly said she'd been caught red-hoofed there. "Ah... yes. That would most certainly be the right type of bat." She grinned. "He is my closest friend. Much like your birds here. We travel together."

Run away? Was that what he'd been doing? It... kind of was, wasn't it? "Would it make you feel better if I promised to run the other way?" he asked, quirking a brow at her, his ear swiveling forward. "If it would, I will. Although, I'm not sure it would matter. I don't get attacked all that often." Which was strange in and of itself, in Sanguine's opinion, but it was definitely a good thing. "The ones you mentioned sound really... deplorable." What terrible Soquili they must be and have been, to have done something so wretched, so awful to Dark Side!

Her poor horn. He did mourn it, even if she didn't as much. What a terrible thing to lose. It was... a mark of identity, wasn't it? But at least it was still there, broken or not. ... He didn't want to think too closely on the alternative. "Hmmn, could be, I suppose. That does make sense, doesn't it? As half-breeds, we do have less of each breed, and more of our own strengths. I wonder what those might be."

... Ah, he probably shouldn't have mentioned that bit about having flight taken away. Sanguine looked sheepish, and a little distressed. Fortunately, though, she forged on ahead fairly rapidly, and his attention shifted again. He nuzzled the bird, who settled down just a tad. "These birds are new friends. Not travel companion or anything, but I have to admit, they don't make poor company. It's a little easier to find seeds than it is to find fruits, too." Even though he knew where to find both.

Dark Side held his gaze until he replied, a part of her almost visibly relaxing. Why? Why did she suddenly care so much if he ran into one of them or not? Or anything cruel, for that matter! "Yes. It makes me feel much better." Her ears relaxed and she tossed her head to settle her nerves once again. That was... quite interesting though. He didn't get attacked? She looked him over again, considering that. Maybe it was for the same reason she had been hesitant? Others mistook him for something... not an alicorn? "That's one way to put it." She murmured, flicking her tail so it curled beside her. "Personally, I have a few other things I would call them."

"It... does, yes. And makes sense. If we are not 'pure', why would we have the full abilities of our kin?" Though... not having any abilities of one or the other was... well. She felt for Sanguine. Not having a horn at all. But at least they both had their wings! That was something, right? However... their own strengths? She was a little more skeptical of this. "I wonder too."

New friends? "Are the birds your only friends?" She finally asked. He had yet to mention anyone other than his parents and the birds... "We travel for, the same reasons, I guess. Or more so, we just enjoy having one another's company. You'll have to meet him!" Dark Side said, brightening. "Oh, I think you'd like him!" But it was still too light out for Bix to be fully awake yet. So maybe later?

Well, if it made her feel better, it wasn't a problem. Sanguine didn't mind doing something so simple as all of that. "I'm sure you have all manner of names for them," he said placidly, gently shifting the little bird so that it wasn't in danger of being bumped during his seed foraging. Not that he could do much of that, considering his current position, but still. It wouldn't do to knock the bird over. "All of them worse than the last." Names that he hadn't even imagined yet.

"Mm, well, whether we have abilities of our own or not, we do have a wider world view, don't you think? Seeing the world through a unicorn's eyes, a wind's eyes. Isn't that special in its own right?" Whatever abilities might or might not go along with it. There was much to wonder about, and some things simply couldn't be known. He gave her a little smile, and flicked an ear, listening to her questions.

His only friends? Ah. "Yes, actually. They are." He had had a friend as a foal, he remembered. But that friend had long since gone his separate way. It was all right, really. He didn't begrudge him that. "Oh? I'm sure I'll like him. Maybe by then there'll be fruit for him to enjoy." It was a nice thought. Maybe they could surprise her little friend.

She gave the stallion an innocent enough look. "Maybe just a few~" She grinned, and didn't speak any of the names going through her mind. They just weren't polite for a first meeting! Maybe after a third or fourth... If she saw Sanguine after this day ended. A little pang - her loneliness perhaps? - hinted towards not agreeing with this. Maybe the mountains really were nice and she'd need to stay and explore them a little more?

... Maybe have Sanguine show her around them?

That was true, she supposed. "I hadn't really thought on it like that. You're right. We have a special gift in seeing from both eyes." She tilted her head towards him. "I suppose you could say, then, that I am more versed in a unicorn's ways then a wind's. And am one hundred percent my own spark!" And spark she definitely had. Something she got from her mother.

Dark Side just blinked at Sanguine. They really were his only friends? Why? He was so sweet! And... "Well, I'll be your friend from this day forward." She declared before her mind fully caught up with her mouth. "And so will Bix, when you get to meet him." She smiled sweetly. "That's two more friends for you." And it really did look like she wasn't leaving these mountains any time soon. "Maybe you could... help me find the fruit too." She added, maaaybe a tad bit shyly.

Whatever names she had for the type of Soquili who would do such things would have to wait for another time, he supposed, as she didn't seem inclined to sharing them. He wasn't sure he wanted to hear them, to begin with. Sanguine didn't like to think badly of other Soquili, he really didn't. "I suppose that what I got from my parents is... a little hard to define." What had he inherited? A tail? Wings? Neither of his parents were quite like him, and there was no sense in dwelling on that. He set down his findings by the birds, and settled back into their conversation.

"Thank you. I'd like that." Having... not just two, but four friends? These little birds could barely be called friends, but he was rather fond of them anyway. They were affectionate in their own ways, and didn't seem to mind whatever it was about him that made others avoid him. No, they didn't seem to mind at all. "Maybe I could be your friend too?" He offered her a smile, rather caught by the sweetness of her own. "And I'd be happy to help you find fruit for your Bix."

"Well, it's not very important, since you are not your parents." She said kindly. "You are you." Sweet, friendly, and just downright adorable, in her opinion. "So let's forget about our parents!" She laughed, wings stretching out before settling against her back again. Nosing about, she started hunting for seeds again, but wasn't finding anything. The little birds had probably eaten all of them at this point.

Her expression was sweet as he thanked her. "You're welcome." He deserved friends! Especially some that weren't just the birds. Ones he could talk with and they talked back. "And I'm sure the birds won't mind another Soquili wandering about either." Was she admitting to staying in the mountains? Maybe. She still wanted to explore them a little more. But she couldn't help the draw she felt towards them.

Getting to her feet, she shook off any grass pieces that might be stuck to her mane and tail. Sitting still for too long was making her anxious. Made her feel... vulnerable. Which, to be fair, she was usually constantly on the move for one reason or another. The prospect of finding a place she could actually settle down and not leave was... a little frightening. "I would very much enjoy having you as my friend!" She replied, suddenly feeling like a giddy little filly! "And I'd very much appreciate the help." Dark Side paused, then added, "Maybe you can even show me around the mountains a bit, too?" Was that... too much?

She was... he... well. Wow. This sort of thing just didn't happen to Sanguine, and he was a little flustered. Having someone be so nice to him, particularly a pretty someone like Dark Side, was absolutely not something he was familiar with. So he gave her a little sheepish grin, and a slight shrug of his shoulders. "Well. I wouldn't mind forgetting about my parents, just for now. It'd be nice to just be me for a change." Just Sanguine. Although 'just Sanguine' usually meant 'just alone'. He wasn't too keen on that, now that he was sort of getting used to having a nice mare around to keep him company. She was... definitely, definitely sweet. Sweeter than she probably knew, even.

"Oh, I'm sure they won't mind. Especially if you keep feeding them." She'd done such a wonderful job of helping already, and he felt pretty sure that the birds would like having another helper. Carefully, he stood up, not wanting to dislodge the bird who had now taken up residence on his back. "Friends, then? I could show you around the mountain, if you want." In fact, spending more time in her company sounded like a very nice idea. Sanguine gestured with his head in the direction of the fruit trees to the west. "Shall we, then?"

If asked about it, Dark Side would have said no, she didn't know just how sweet she was. The mare was not used to anyone telling her so and very rarely let that side of her show. But something about Sanguine tugged at her sweet side and she found she felt rather comfortable around him. Which was... strange and, well, kind of exciting! "I, for one, would enjoy you just being... you." She said matter of factly. She liked him just the way he was so far. Something that kind of made her insides flutter about a bit. But she didn't focus too hard on it, pushing it off as simply not having had much company besides Bix before.

She smiled at the birds, nodding her head. "Of course I would keep feeding them!" It wasn't like she didn't do something similar with Bix already! And the birds were so much easier to please with seeds. Not fruit that was a little more difficult to find. She watched him stand up carefully, and the little bird nestled against his back. He was... a fairly large stallion, wasn't he? Dark Side looked him over again with some appreciation. Before catching herself and looking away shyly.

"I'd very much like that. And yes, friends." She glanced over her shoulder at him and smiled. "You lead the way and I'll tag along. And you can tell me a little more about the mountain!" Friends. The word echoed through her mind and she felt... very happy. She had a friend! A new friend!
