Following the sounds of the flits and their nest of thread, Kesin was cautious, wary of stepping on any they might have left behind. She wasn't entirely sure if it would count as a score if she did, since the dye might not stay so well on the soles of one's shoes, but she didn't want to find out the hard way. What she did find, she quickly doused, but tried to be a little more conservative with her water consumption. The less she had to go back and forth from the stream, the more time she could spend actually 'fighting' thread, and the better she would do on this test.

Hus turned when Kesin arrived giving the girl a nod of greeting. It seemed she'd found a stream after all to refill with. The other girl Cesoi was taking a bit to figure out the flamethrower as Hus glanced between Kesin and her as Kesin went off on her own following the sound of flits. Hus herself could hear the distant flutter of wings and see the barest outline of their hovering forms in the distance.
"Come on we'd better follow her. Light this when you can so we can see." She called to Cesoi carefully dodging the dyed thread on the ground as she padded after Kesin. If that didn't work she'd probably try and get a spark off her belt buckle and see about lighting the self-made torch herself.

A torch
Too much time spent routing through the bins, something that should have bothered him sooner. Giving a slight mutter at his own absentmindedness, Silion began to trail after the others. He was treading through the brush, going over all the lessons and teachings he had gone through up until now. Move carefully, keep an eye on the sky and on the ground to avoid accidentally stepping on or brushing near thread...

Progressing through the woods, the noise and buzz of the flits made it easy to track their whereabouts... leading the group to the nest of 'Thread' almost immediately. Armed with their tools, the apprentices came upon a writing mass of strings with no flits anywhere about it. In fact, the flits were perched in the branches above, the ambiance in the air one of cautious curiosity, an odd emotion in the usually playful Flits.
What had they disturbed in the night?
As Silion caught up, the pool of light from the torch played over the mass on the ground and the iridescent shells of some sort of large insect could be see between the strings. With the light came a buzzing, low at first, then louder and louder.... heartbeats later, a swarm of winged beetle-like insects surged from the ground in angry whirling sweeps.
The flits called out in alarm and disappeared, their strings forgotten on branches and roots alike.
===== SPECIAL EVENT: It seems your tromping about and the flits getting into everything has disturbed a nest of some sort of winged insect! It's impossible to tell if they're poisonous enough but it's pretty clear they're angry! Make your choice: stand and fight or flee to safety. Either way, roll 1d10 with your posts and compare it to the number of this post. If you roll well, you are less harassed, if you roll less, you're much harassed by the swarm... and roll equal means they seem to ignore you.

Hus blinked down at the ground at the writhing mass at their feet with a look of surprise and curiosity. Glancing to the flits in the trees she frowned. What was so unpleasant that even curious flits wouldn't mess with it? Then from the mass of churning a swarm of beetles broke loose forcing Hus to swiftly back up before they caught sight of her. Luckily one of the others had indeed grabbed the torch and with it lit it would make it safer and easier for Hus herself to light her own make shift one.
That and her proximity to Silion seemed to be keeping the swirling beetles back somewhat. Not much, but enough to give her a little bit of breathing room as she watched on. Hus had been out and about the forests all her life, scanning her mind she tried to figure out what these odd creatures could possibly be. Then again she wasn't as familiar with this area as her own. Perhaps these bugs were only native to the Benden area?
"What in the name of Hold, Hall and Hearth?" Hus mused low swatting the few beetles that got to close shooing them away. It was at this moment she was thanking her lucky stars she chose to keep covered in leather. No telling what these things are or could do.

Hus had at first been to startled by the sudden swarm of insects to notice the complete absence of firelizards. Yet now that her original panic had passed and she continued swatting at the beetles with her make shift leafy torch which had been re-purposed into a bug swatter she found that they were alone. Not a single firelizard body dotted the trees making her glance around in trepidation. This obviously was not a part of the 'simulation' they were supposed to be going through.
Did this mean their instructors were on their way? I mean surely someone would notice that amount of firelizards suddenly just disappearing when they all fled back to their owners. Till then though this was left for them to deal with. "Bloody! Sharding! Bugs!" Hus hissed under her breath managing to keep the majority of the swarm off of her thanks to her makeshift bug swatter and began slowly to back up. Not wanting to risk her footing and bump into the dyed thread covered foliage and lose points on their test. Even if they had met with some rather unexpected conditions.

Keeping up her heavy swatting, batting the bugs away left and right with her leafy makeshift torch she'd yet to light Hus inched closer. What on Pern where these creatures! Or more important what where they doing here? And in a huge writhing pile like this? Trying to keep the bugs off of her Hus slowly scooted forward to try and get a better look at where the beetles came from with out antagonizing them more the necessary. After all at this point she was probably going to get bit or stung or something anyway and might as well get some knowledge for her effort.
Narrowing her eyes in the dim light she peered at the pile trying to fulfill her curiosity. After all this could be a new species for all they knew and perhaps if they could give a good report it'd make up for the slight pause in their simulation. That and the fact firelizards had left the bugs alone intrigued her more. She'd seen firelizards catch beetles and other creatures out of the air plenty of times and munch of them so such a reaction though likely out of surprise was still odd.

When someone with a torch had caught up to them, Kesin had hurriedly covered one of her eyes with her hand to keep from losing her sight in the dark now that her eyes had adjusted to it. What she saw in the torchlight, though, she didn't like at all: angry bugs! Angry bugs she knew nothing about, and that were swarming all around them.
Shard this! With a few colorful, choice words, Kesin bolted. If Hus wanted to stand around and play with the bugs, that was her prerogative, but Kesin didn't want to find out the hard way that they were more than just harmless.
...unfortunately, they seemed to follow her.

Cursing more loudly now, Kesin tried to outdistance the swarm - if she got far enough away, maybe the sharding things would lose interest! She fled back in the direction of the stream she'd found earlier, and the farther away she got, the fewer bugs seemed to bother her. She didn't stop once they thinned out, but kept running.
She wanted away from these things, now!

She'd thought she was starting to get away from the bugs, but unfortunately for her, they soon came back with a vengeance. Stupid sharding bugs! She flailed at them uselessly, trying to swat them away, but it didn't help. Then she tried to spray them with water from her pack, but that didn't seem to do much good, either.
Desperate, she ran back towards the group, yelling, "Help! Somebody get these sharding things off me!"

The swirling mass of beetles that made itself visible was enough to send Silion backing up at least enough so that he didn't wind up stepping on the angry, chittering mass. Swatting at the bugs with both hand and torch he was determined to do his best to keep them off of him. The sharding things probably bit and stung for all he knew. Muttering another curse as he continued to back off, while resisting the urge to bolt. If he fled from these bugs then how was he supposed to survive dealing with whers and Threadfall?
"What are these sharding things?" He called noting Hus examining them though he sensibly kept his distance.

Catching the sound of Kesin's cries, he turned to the sound hoping that the bugs would stay away from him. Unfortunately with the young woman coming charging back...with a swarm of bugs chasing her. Silion wanted nothing to do with the things as much as natural curiosity demanded that he find out what they were if they were capable of scaring off flits.

Not paying attention to the swarm was clearly a bad idea and if he wasn't too busy trying to get the swarming bugs away from him. Swearing as he swatted at them, Silion began to move away from the point where the swarm had started. Back to where they'd started or away he didn't know nor did he care. He just wanted them off and gone.

It seemed as though her panicked motions had drawn the strange insects towards her and they flocked about her, landing on her, landing in her hair, crawling into her clothing. The clacking, clattering sound of their passage around the group was disorienting.
Hus' stubborn refusal to flee seemed to work... at first. The sopping dyed string lay in a mass on the ground, obscuring the terrain below. The first splats were loud and a viscus green fluid stained her leather where the beetle was swatted... the first few did not change anything, though after several, she began to definitely smell of something.
The swarm split then, like a host of angry bees, and flowed past Silion as he backed up, getting tangled in his hair but giving the torch a wide birth - it seemed they were something to avoid fire. Buffeted by their passing, they soon descended upon Hus, landing on her en masse.
===== SPECIAL EVENT: roll 1d10 with your posts. Kesin: Roll well, and you find a water hole deep enough to jump in to avoid/drown the beetles, beyond that your rolls are to avoid sinking/drowning problems if you choose to jump in, otherwise continue to roll for beetle-harassment. Hus: You've become covered in their ichor and it seems to attract them even more then motion. The smell is pungent, unpleasant, and not unlike skunk-scent... additionally, roll well to avoid falling into the hole the flits were trying to stuff with strings. If you fall in, it's a 3 foot depression in the ground just big enough to get stuck in... while the bugs are harassing you. Silion: As the one with the torch, you seem to have discovered their weakness... however, the bugs are quickly getting into your clothing, and that torch is dangers. Roll well to avoid lighting the nearest brush/tree on fire. Anyone else: Roll to determine how harassed by the insects you are.
If you match the roll I made, you do not botch. Rolling well => HIGHER THEN OR EQUAL TO 5; Rolling poorly => LOWER THEN 5
**Don't worry about using my roll as a comparison
