Obviously his threat hadn't affected the man too much. "No, of course I'm not threatening you. But, what I have to lose is the same as you, a loving spawn of yourself. Whether you'd like to admit it or not, he comes from your biological makeup. Though you don't treat him the way you should treat a child, but who am I to judge." he said, smirking a tad.
It was rather strange to see that Nikolai was so eager to get on with the procedure. Before Amerald could say much more, he had already taken off to the stairs. Amerald shook his head, standing to follow the guardian back up the stairs. He was quite unnerved by everything that was about to take place. He hadn't done anything for at least a year and a half, but his notes would definitely guide him through this procedure. Luckily in that time, he created a potion that could allow the hraapea to feel less pain than what Annabelle went through. But nevertheless, he would still feel most of it.
-----
Amelia just shook her head. "Well, the reason why she was so upset was because...well, she just wants the best for you. You see, she tends to care about people and especially other hraapea a whole lot. So when she hears that something is wrong, or what she feels is wrong, she tends to overreact." she said, giving a false description to the new hraapea.
Amelia did not want him to know that her sister was in love with him when they were younger, and that was the real reason for her nature towards him now. Normally Annabelle would have calmly thought through a plan to act, one that was much less involved but still got the job done. She was just an emotional wreck at this moment, or at least that's how Amelia saw it.

Nikolai shrugged, tossing the words over his shoulder as he clasped the pendant around his neck. "He's no longer a child, even if he insists on acting like one. As for his loss-- Well, I'm sure you might take it harder than I will, playing god and all." Even so, Nikolai knew well that appearances and reality were two different things. In his own way, the man would brood. Someone had once told him that traveling with a person for a long period of time made them family.
Entering the living room once more, the redhead stepped for half a second, hesitating by the door. The atmosphere in the room hit him like a ton of bricks-- awkward. Taking a quick, sweeping glance around, Nikolai checked out with two things. For one, the raven was missing-- Annabelle, was it? For the other, the remaining two hraapea were standing by the stairs. Stepping out of the way for Amerald, the mercenary headed over to his ward.
-----
Looking at Amelia questioningly, Helias' expression did little in the ways of change even after her explanation. It was probably an ideal he'd never understand, as Nikolai had always deflected this kind of logic as weakness.
"But I can handle my--" The boy was cut off as the door opened. Deciding to make things short and reading his guardian's expression, he pretended to dust himself off before meeting the mercenary mid-way.
"What happened?" Casting a glance to Amelia, Nikolai reached out to spin the hraapea around once. It was probably an odd gesture-- one that Helias still didn't understand-- but from time to time the man would look him over whenever he returned. Helias wasn't sure if Nikolai was checking that he wasn't injured, or that he wasn't keeping any secrets.
"Nothing. Annabelle went upstairs." Steadying himself once Nikolai let go, the hraapea looked at Amerald, then Amelia as though asking them to confirm his words.
"Well, that doesn't matter now. You need to do something for me." The words weren't a question, and as Helias came to figure out, it wasn't a request either.
"Okay." "Amerald will fill you in on the details. If you do this right, I'll reward you. If not, I hope you like this house."
Patting his ward on the head, Nikolai set both hands on the boy's shoulder and gave him a slight push towards the man in question. Stumbling two paces, Helias righted himself and made his way over to the creator. He didn't seem nearly as confused or afraid as he probably should be-- it seemed Nikolai demanded such things of him all the time.
Mismatched gaze resting on the strange man, the hraapea flashed a void, almost apologetic smile. "What do I do?"

Amerald rolled his eyes as the man made fun of his profession. It was obvious that these two had to agree to disagree on the ways of life. He couldn't make Nikolai treat his heir better, but Amerald thought of this as an opportunity to make things right between the two. He knew that it would be hard doing this to another of his creations, but if it was requested of him, than it needed to be done. Nikolai was in charge at this point, even though Amerald didn't like that fact.
He watched as the two spoke to one another, gesturing Amelia upstairs. "Amelia, go keep your sister company. We'll be in the basement for the time being." Amerald commanded his daughter.
"Yes father." Amelia said with a smile, turning on her heels and walking to the staircase. When she reached the bottom stair, she turned to Helias. "It was nice seeing you again Helias. Good luck down there." she said, almost fearful of her newfound friend. She had a feeling of what was going to be happening down there. Amerald only took one hraapea down there before, and it was Annabelle. They were down there for about an hour and she just heard screams and yelps of pain. She was going to make sure Annabelle wouldn't hear anything. She made her way upstairs as per instruction.
"Right this way." Amerald gestured towards the door to the basement. "You'll just need to keep calm and steady. I'll explain once we get down the stairs." he said, glancing up at the guardian as he placed his hand on the hraapea's shoulder, pushing him gently towards the door. He gave a look of disgust at Nikolai, but nothing was going to change.
As they made their way down the stairs, Amerald turned his head around to say something to Nikolai. "You can come down here, or make yourself at home in the living room. This will take about an hours time." he said, leaving the decision up to the guardian.
As they reached the bottom, a few of the candles had been blown out, thus Amerald fixed them by relighting the flames. He then gestured for the boy to go to the 'operating table' and sit upon it. Next to that was a stand which held the instruments needed for the procedure along with the onyx crystal that was to be infused.
He walked over to the shelf which contained some potions and swiped a little serum he had created off the top shelf and then walked over towards the little lyrebird. "Alright Helias, what I am going to need you to do is stay calm and drink this." he said, handing the boy the serum.
"What I am going to do may hurt quite a bit, but you cannot jump or fidget. You must sit as still as possible. You will feel much better after the wounds inflicted today heal, and you will be much stronger. I must first ask you if you are willing to take this pain for your guardian's sake. I wouldn't want to do something that you wouldn't want. I must say, you will feel much stronger and much more powerful, something Nikolai obviously wants. What will it be? If you need to speak to him in private or at all, just say the word and you may." he said, warning him of the possible danger of pain. He felt the need to do this, for Nikolai hadn't consulted, but rather instructed. Amerald had Annabelle's permission when doing the procedure before. That was something that he would request of all future hraapea as well. He wouldn't do anything that they wouldn't want him to.

The day didn't seem like it was going to get any better, although Helias was quite glad he was used to being kept in the dark about things. Otherwise, his confusion might have made him burst, screaming profanities and otherwise making a fool of himself.
As he was lead down to the basement, the hraapea's movements came a little less willingly. Cramped and dark places weren't something he despised, unlike his guardian, but Amerald's own discomfort was broadcasting loud and clear. It made him uneasy. Tail feathers brushing against either side of the walls, Helias glanced back when the scientist addressed his creator. Unable to help himself, the boy exhaled softly, the sound suspiciously close to a chuckle. It was useless telling Nikolai such things, as the man did whatever he wanted to regardless.
As he had expected, Helias found himself in the basement without a guardian. Taking a seat where Amerald indicated, the boy's smugness subsided once he laid eyes on the instruments. His body went rigged, barely registering the man's words. Eventually, he managed to move his body enough to accept the potion. When he found the liquid odorless, Helias tilted his head back and drank. The empty container was held in both hands, as if it would make the decision for him.
"How much power?" Not his own voice, but the mercenary's.
Licking his dry lips, the hraapea eyed the knives and needles again. His first instinct had been to reject the idea, especially at the mention of excruciating pain-- But his guardian's influence was hard to shake. Strive for power and knowledge-- whatever doesn't kill will make one stronger. The added threat of being abandoned wasn't particularly appealing, either. Even if this place seemed friendlier than traveling with Nikolai, the life with his guardian was all he'd ever known. Helias didn't like change.
"And what kind of power?' Shifting a little away from the offending sharp objects, the boy tried to meet Amerald's gaze before abruptly dropping his eyes. He seemed to want to accept the alchemist's offer of speaking with his guardian, although Helias already knew that Nikolai would simply tell him to go through with it. His guardian was a predictable man outside of the battlefield.

Amerald took a deep breath, listening and watching as the hraapea's uneasy feelings and actions translated themselves to himself. He just listened to what Helias had to say and then responded accordingly. "Haha, I see you've learned to mimic those around you. That's a great power to have within this world." he started, trying to gather the words to actually respond accurately to this man's question.
"The power depends, you will feel a bit weak at first, but over time the power will see its way throughout your body, making you feel tougher than ever. The power that has been chosen for you is that of the Onyx Crystal. It will give you the power of darkness. You will be able to manipulate the darkness around you after you've learned to control your powers. Thus making it much easier for you to hide or even defend yourself." he said, grabbing the little orb that lay on the side table with the different instruments of a doctor.
He grabbed the tip of the bottle and pulled it from the boys clutches. "Now that you've drunk that, you will feel much less pain, though we must wait a few moments before we begin." he said, making his way towards the desk. He placed the empty bottle on top of the desk and grabbed his glasses as well as his notes for the procedure, placing the glasses on his face and rereading over the notes carefully.
"Is there anything else you want to know before we begin?" the alchemist asked as he looked up from his notes, walking towards the lyrebird. He ended up standing right in front of him, placing one hand on the boys shoulder, looking him straight in the eye. "If there is anything, please let me know now." he concluded. He was unsure how the boy really felt about all of this, besides the fact he seemed to be uneasy and definitely nervous. Amerald wanted to make sure he was doing the right thing before beginning.

".. No." At length, Helias bowed his head and took a sharp interest in his boots. He knew he could walk out of there unscathed and he wouldn't be punished for it, but it would be hard to face his guardian if he ran away again. The hraapea had always thought Nikolai expected too much of him, but he couldn't deny that he often expected too less from himself.
Still, the thought of willingly allowing someone to inflict pain on him was almost enough to make him faint. He really was no good when it came to being the ideal 'man'.
Looking down at his sleeve, the boy worried at one of the loose threads before ripping off a decent sized piece of cloth and rolling it up into a ball. If he managed to get through with this, the very least the stupid mercenary could do was buy him a new set of clothes, right? He didn't really want to bite onto anything that might have been sitting around in this basement. Everything was giving him the creeps.
"Where will you be cutting?"

Amerald nodded at the hraapea as he said no. He took the Onyx Crystal and the hammer that was near it and then grabbed a little plastic covering from under the table to cover up the crystal so that when he broke it, the pieces wouldn't fly everywhere. He then placed the crystal in position and with a quick flick of his wrist, it shattered into many, many tiny pieces all within the confines of the plastic casing.
He then removed the cover and placed it back where he had gotten it. He scraped together the many pieces and then turned to the boy. "Well, we'll be going into your dominate hand. So, if you could please give me whichever hand you use more often for things, that would be great." he said, grabbing the knife and sterilizing it over a candle. Luckily the light was perfect for him. He could see what he needed to and that was enough.
"Are you ready to begin the procedure, Helias?" he asked, once again finally standing right in front of the boy. He had everything prepared now. The crystal was in pieces, the blade in hand. It was just time for Helias to say the word.

He would have been curious about the onyx if he wasn't busy being scared. As it were, Helias drew in a deep breath, staring at Amerald's chest before averting his gaze again. Timidly, he offered out his left hand, keeping his face turned away from the alchemist. Eventually, with an almost morbid curiosity, the hraapea shifted his gaze and studied his fingers in a side glance.
"I'm ready." Came the soft words, barely above a whisper. He wished he was like his guardian, so ready to take on anything. But then again, sometimes Helias wondered if Nikolai got some sort of twisted pleasure from pain. There was such as thing as being too eager.
"-- Wait." The sight of the metal blade made his stomach turn and for a second, all his resolve dispersed like fireworks in the sky. It was only after a minute more of concentrated breathing that the boy forced himself to relax, remembering what was taught to him.
"S-Sorry. We can begin, please. Hurry." Pressing the torn fabric to his mouth with his less skillful hand, the boy's wings arched before ruffling up, obviously agitated. He could already feel his heartbeat accelerate, his body tense despite orders. He wished there was someone to hold his hand, maybe tell him that it wasn't as bad as he was thinking-- but that would never come to pass. He'd have to suck it up like a man.

The time had come. The reason for the visit in the first place was now here before Amerald. He felt the beads of sweat run down his face as he lifted the hraapea's left hand into the air so he could get a better view. He took the blade and waved it a bit. "It will be over before you know it." he said, trying his best to calm the boy down.
He took the knife and slit it right under the skin, almost as though it was a rather long, large paper cut. With a quick flick, he then cut another two slits on either side of the middle. It was definitely going to be hard on this boy. The worse had yet to come. Whenever the crystals went into the body, the transformation was about to begin. They would dissipate into the bloodstream, causing it to boil and flow rapidly throughout the body. Although it would feel much like an adrenaline rush, it feels painful allowing the crystal to fully infuse with the body.
Amerald worked quickly, hoping that Helias would be alright. He picked the pieces up with a pair of tweezers and then would place the pieces delicately under the skin, taking a cloth to wipe the excess blood from the hand when it became too much.
~~~
After a tedious hour of constant picking up, placing, picking up, placing, Amerald finally stopped. He then took the cloth and wiped the last bit of blood from the wounds and then with a cloth bandage he began to wrap the hand. "Within about an hour, you should start to feel really weak. But I suggest you just take a nap, rest, and when you awaken, you'll feel much better." he said. The procedure was a success. "Wait here. I'll be back." he said, going to his desk and taking a cloth to wipe his eyes and forehead. He was so happy to be done. The cries and shrieks that would have escaped the hraapea's mouth were enough to make him remember the last encounter with the crystals that he had with Annabelle.
He then placed his glasses on the table and went up the stairs. He opened the door to the hallway leading to the living room and said, "Nikolai, the deed is done." He then scurried back downstairs, wondering if Nikolai had even heard him.
He went to the lyrebird and smiled. "How are you feeling, Helias?" he asked, curiously. He would then take the mental note and write it down later with his response.
Helias had initially flinched when Amerald took his hand, although he relaxed enough for the man to make the first cut. No sooner had the blade dug in that the boy bit onto the fabric, a muffled scream starting at the back of his throat and dying before it fully developed. He was really not good with pain.
With each cut, the boy's heart sped up and the blood flowed faster. He was in tears by the time the wound was big enough for the first crystal shard-- and Helias had been too naive to think that was as bad as the feeling would get.
Vision blurred with tears, the hraapea had looked up when Amerald stopped. Before he could register what was going on, the first piece of onyx began to integrate itself with his flesh. Dropping the fabric, the boy let loose an excruciating scream, loud enough to shake the house. He had been doing well to keep still up to that point, but by then he couldn't help curling up defensively, holding his wounded hand close.
Within five minutes, Helias lost his voice. He didn't use it much to begin with, so screaming continuously for more than a minute was a new record. The tears flowed in a more definite line now, two silvery streaks that shone in the faint candle light. If he had known that this was the type of pain he needed to deal with, Helias would have gladly chosen to be shunned.
~~~
By the time Amerald had finished with his tedious task, Helias was quite docile and quiet. He lay on his side, legs tucked up to his chest and his left hand barely kept on the table the alchemist worked at. He was on the verge of consciousness, face pale and too weak to even rearrange his wings. One of them was held at an awkward position, pinned beneath his body. He didn't respond at all to Amerald's words, but a sharp shiver would run its course through his body from time to time. His eyes were dull, the one gold eye that usually shone of curiosity now faded to an unflattering grey. Like the alchemist, the boy was covered in cold sweat, his breathing coming irregularly and raspy.
When Amerald left the room, he closed his eyes and let the rest of his senses go. Sleep came easier now that his body was numb to the discomfort.
---
Nikolai glanced to the corridor when the scientist called to him, snapping out of his thoughts. When he had heard the first cry from the basement, the man had realized he didn't know what type of reward Helias would like. He had been pondering the fact for the whole hour they were down there, at first doing it because he had promised-- and eventually, vehemently throwing himself into the task so he didn't have to listen to the anguished calls.
Standing up, the mercenary drew in a deep breath and steadied himself. He waited until he was perfectly composed again before heading down towards the lab.
It had been a while since he heard such painful shrieks-- After all, the man had been out of the battle field for a good ten years, at least. He still remembered and had nightmares about his early experiences, but awake and sober, the fleeting sounds weren't quite as worrying. It was probably a good thing that being an assassin required the utmost stealth. Nikolai wasn't quite sure how sane he'd be if he had to listen to each one of them cry like that for an hour.
Reaching the bottom step, the man drew himself up to his full height, running a hand through his hair before shifting his gaze slowly across the floor. He was almost certain he'd find the hraapea in pieces.
Just before he could see his ward, Nikolai averted his gaze and looked instead at Amerald.
"How long until he's rested enough to test those powers?"

"You must give him time. At least over night. Let him rest, bring him upstairs and lay him on the couch, he will be much more comfortable there. I'll clean up here and then we can discuss this further." he said, going over to his tools and grabbing them all, taking them to the back room where he stayed most of the time. Back there he had running water, where he would clean the tools needed.
Within a few moments, the tools were clean and he placed them back onto the side-table where they were before. He then brushed the powder from the crystal to the floor and went to his desk. He got out the note, realizing that Helias was already asleep before he got anything out of him. "Well, he sweat terribly, and of course, was in excruciating pain." he said as he wrote down as much as he could about the experience from Helias' point of view.
Amerald wrote for a matter of fifteen to twenty minutes about the experience for both him and the hraapea. When he was finished, he took off his glasses, setting them down on the table once more, rubbing his eyes with his index finger and thumb. He stood and began to walk towards the staircase.
He blew out the few candles and went upstairs. "So, do you have any other questions for me, Nikolai? You are more than welcome to stay the night here. I can set up a bed down here with your son if you'd wish to stay near him through the night." he said, smiling. Saying things like son and making it so that they would have to stay the night was part of his plan to get a caring reaction from Nikolai.
Although Helias would definitely need to sleep for a matter of at least six to seven hours before being fully rested, and just stay still for at least a day, Amerald nodded and waited for a response from the guardian.

Nikolai, for once, said nothing in turn as he did what he was told. With uncharacteristic gentleness, the man picked up his unconscious ward and headed up the stairs, moving sideways and putting one foot over the other so as not to knock the boy against the walls.
Managing to open the door his elbow [With a certain degree of skill that could only come from practice.], the boy was deposited onto the couch, but Nikolai neglected to join on the free end. Instead, he shrugged off his coat and laid it across the other's thin frame, searching the pockets and extracting what tools he needed. Slipping those into his pant pockets, the redhead glanced over to Amerald as he joined them.
"Stop calling him my son, and I won't be staying the night here. I trust you will take care of him for me?" Gathering up his shoulder length hair, the man tied it back neatly. With his bangs out of his scarred face, Nikolai looked a thousand times more crude. He flipped up the hood attached to his second shirt, effectively concealing his eyes.
"I have matters to attend to now. I'll be back by sunrise. If you have any special request from me, write it down and leave it with Helias or the owner of the inn. I'll look when I can." As if he had merely finished a business agreement, Nikolai finished tying the strings around his leather gauntlets and headed for the door. He didn't look back, nor did he spend anymore time checking on the hraapea on the couch. These maternal things were better off left to someone who was used to it.

Amerald puffed a bit when the man stated he wouldn't be staying the night. "Yes, of course I will. Annabelle and Amelia will help me." he said, turning his attention to the sleeping lyrebird on the couch. Amerald did find it sweet that Nikolai left his coat with the boy and he noticed when he took care in taking him up the stairs.
He then rolled his eyes as he watched the man leave through the shop without even a glance back at the creature he helped create. He couldn't believe how heartless Nikolai could be when it came to Helias. Amerald went up the stairs and knocked on the door to his daughter's room. "Nikolai is gone and we must take care of Helias for the time being. Just allow him to sleep and he'll be fine. He had a rough evening." he said, smiling and closing the door to their room.
He left for the spare bedroom which was next to Annabelle's and brought from it an extra blanket and a pillow. He took it downstairs to where Helias was stationed and still sound asleep. He lifted up Helias' head and placed the pillow beneath it. Then he unfolded the extra blanket and placed it over the sleeping hraapea.
"Sweet dreams, my darling." he said as he pet the face of his creation. He smiled, feeling tears well up within his eyes. He left to blow out the candles within the room and then retired for the night in his basement.
~~~ THE NEXT MORNING ~~~
Amerald awoke before the sun rose like usual, getting himself ready for the day. He went upstairs to see if the hraapea had slept through the night.
When he went upstairs, he was surprised to see something rather...interesting. Annabelle had curled herself up on the ground beside Helias. Amerald smiled, remembering a time when he would do such things. He shook the memory from his head and got himself something to eat while he waited for the red haired guardian to return from his 'matters'. Amerald was not the most pleased person with Nikolai, but they would, once again, have to agree to disagree with certain aspects of life.
Nikolai walked in a few minutes after Amerald made himself breakfast, popping open the lock with an ease that would unsettle anyone who had been watching. Closing the door lightly behind him, he double checked one last time to make sure there wasn't any blood residue left before entering the living room.
"... Did something happen?" The redhead quirked a brow, stopping dead in his tracks two paces in. He too, was caught offguard by Annabelle's presence and from the way the mercenary stared, the scene was probably the last thing he'd imagine Helias to be caught in. Right before flying pigs and purple dinosaurs.
"Girls shouldn't be allowed to sleep there." Muttering the words beneath his breath, Nikolai walked over. Despite his heavy boots, the man moved as quiet as a mouse, expertly muffling his step as he leaned down to pick the girl up and deposit her into the other couch. There was a certain type of gentleness he always held in reserve for women and girls-- Nikolai didn't mind letting people know that he could still be a gentleman. Killers had their morals too.
Observing the sleeping hraapea a final time, Nikolai turned his back to the two to focus on Amerald. His voice was quiet, barely above a whisper but still strong enough to be condescending or commanding-- whichever happened to be slightly better.
"Did he wake up at some point?"
---
Helias shifted slightly, already awake but feigning sleep as he usually did. His body ached as though he had been forced to run several of Nikolai's custom obstacle courses and his left hand was still burning. He was in horrendous mood and somewhere deep down, he was terrified of it. He had never felt this horrible before-- bad to the point where he wanted to hurt something else. Inflict the same pain that had been done to him.
It was probably Amerald's presence that had woke him first. When they had first met again the day before, Helias had felt a little uncomfortable around him, mostly due to the man's tendency to touch without warning. But now the boy was a bit more finely tuned to the other's aura, subconsciously linking the alchemist with the silver knife he had wielded.
The second to pull him completely from slumber was the forceful aura of his guardian. Helias always found it hard to sleep when Nikolai was up and about-- even if he was quiet, the man held with him a source of power that Helias could never ignore. It was probably unique to him only, but whenever the man moved, it was like standing in a pool of water and feeling the force of the movement from one end to the other.
Eventually, Helias mustered up enough strength to open up one eye. His good eye, once a bright gold that rivaled the sun, had yet to recover-- it was still the same dull grey it had turned yesterday.
Amerald saw Nikolai come into the room and was surprised and a bit shocked by it. He could have swore he locked the doors before going to bed, but of course, Nikolai was more crafty than he had given him credit for.
Amerald listened carefully to his words, and then spoke up with a very soft voice. "Nothing that I know of. When I awoke this morning, she was lying on the ground next to him. She must have taken care of Helias through the night, whether he was asleep or not. And fallen asleep right there." A smile grew upon the man's face. He was definitely happy to see Annabelle do such a kind thing. She really did like Helias, and even Amerald could see that.
He watched as Nikolai picked up and placed Annabelle onto the couch nearby. He smiled. "So, you do have a heart deep down in there somewhere." Amerald teased. He didn't know that there was a soft spot for any creature within that shell of a body.
"But to answer your question, I don't believe he woke up at all. He's probably in a lot of pain. I'll be right back." he said, finishing the last bit of making breakfast for himself and whoever else wanted the delicious eggs and pancakes. He went into the main shop, grabbing some of the potions he had created and bringing them back into the living room. "If he wakes up fully, have him drink this. It will stop a lot of the pain. Major pain medication right there." he said, handing the bottle of pink-like liquid to the guardian.
He then went back to his post, finishing throwing breakfast onto separate plates for everyone. "Would you be interested in staying for breakfast? Helias should rest for a bit longer anyway. I don't want him to have to walk until he regains his strength." Amerald said, picking up his plate and beginning to eat a few eggs.
