Zombie Survival List:
machete
bowie knife
twin .45 Colt automatic pistols
12-gauge shotgun
extra ammunition
compound hunting bow
arrows
mace
pepper spray
swiss army knife
steel forearm guards
kevlar gloves
riot gear

NOTE: How do Zombies track their prey? If they use sight or scent, would mace and pepper spray work?

The answer to your question depends on the mythology your following. I dont know about Romero zombies but Brooks zombies use all senses equally. Snyder zombies hunt from what I've noticed, mainly with sight, but seem to have a 6th sense when it comes to finding prey, or perhaps theyre just drawn by the sound of the others moan. and I'm not sure if zombies actually breathe or if they dont because they're dead. if they dont breathe then hunting by smell is out

decapitation just renders them motionless. Their head is still alive and can still spread infection because it will still bite.

burning is the recommended way to dispose of them after killing them.

Perhaps not oddly, preparing for a zombie outbreak isn't too far off of preparing for other types of end-of-the world scenarios.
My friends and I have been preparing for Peak Oil. We've built a small farm that can sustain about 5 people, and have built basic protections and made plans for ditches and the like to defend our food and supplies from people should we have to. People should be a lot harder to kill than zombies, because people move fast, use weapons, and think.
Thankfully, I spent a great deal of my time in the military playing with guns, and am a marksman on the 9mm and was certified for a lot of other weapons. Our farm contains a gym, so I would be able to keep up my fitness program.
The only concern I have is that I eat a LOT to sustain and build on my size and strength, and I'm not sure the amount of resources I would need to continue to consume that amount would be available.
Regardless, at some point human culture needs to be rebuilt. That implies agriculture at the very least, and possibly livestock.
Due to scarcity of resources, consider killing and eating other people who try to steal from you (it's going to happen).

I couldn't imagine eating someone else. especially during a zombie outbreak when the person could be infected

You may have access to the nearby Walmart store gun cabinet, but two things might be blocking your path if you do manage to make it through the front door: Other Survivors [who don't give a damn about a lock on a cabinet] and zombies. Sporting Goods and Hunting are possibly the furthest away from the front doors. . .

good luck! biggrin

I think I will go with the 30".
the wal-mart I live near has bullet proof windows in its front doors and automatically locks the moment someone in the office pulls the "oh s**t lever" and their trained to do that in case someone is trying to break in. So more than likely a large number of survivors wont be an issue. two I have a key to the emergency entrance on the roof ^^ three, the gun cabnet is covered in bullet proof class and locked with a magnetic lock that has it's own power supply INSIDE the case. unless someone has a rocket launcher then wal-mart would be a good place to set up a temporary base or a good place to stock -up. Though staying longer then a couple of hours is a bad idea.

That's. . . that's really smart. Okay, you're in the club for better ideas.

I have nothing to worry about. i HAVE THAT 'uBER-PARANOID MAN' zombie base in my basement It has 2 feet thick Titanium walls, 3 5 feet think doors, 20 pistols,1o machine guns. 2 Custom Made Halo 3 Battle Rifles, 1 Sniper Rifle. 60 or so grenades, and a bazooka. The Army base nearby lets me keep this stuff. ((Halfly because they plan to use it as a base if needed)).

Oh, and I got instructions from a website to build Halo 3 Spartan armor, instead I tweaked it and have 2 inch thick Titanium Armour instead of wood and plastic. I am so ready. My neighborhood plans to build Tunnels from their basement to mine, all with the same stuff, and with Spartan armour for everyone in da family. So, rly, you expect zombies to overun a neighbor of Pyromatic Spartans?

So you've got a cement basement, a couple of pistols or guns, you're Not an Army dude, and you've got some kind of plastic armor thing you liked from a Halo 3 fanatic site?

Besides, adorning a heavy armor would most certainly get you killed. Just like grenades, bazookas, and having neighbors with access to your home. :'( Sorry.

First off, LOVE your list.

Second off, I believe they track by the scent of blood or noise. Suppose they still had functionality of half of their senses, their base instincts?

Fire WILL kill anything, and there's a good chance you'll go with it if you don't know the proper care and handling of such an awesome weapon of power. You have to worry about how to pass the time while it's trying to die and coming after you. Not only do you have a zombie, but you have a flamey one trying to kill you.

Decapitation is a surefire way to Immobilize [not kill] a zombie. Destroy the brain or sever the spinal cord in any massive way will insure your survival so long as you can still run. Zombies can be such bastards.

The only problem with an Axe is that you can't decapitate in one swing. The top is heavy, so you'd have to concentrate on ONE target at a time without interruption. And they're top heavy. NOT recommended.

lol thank you.
zombie survival in a nutshell:

- Join a local team of zombie hunters. It may sound like bullshit, but better in a group then on your own.

- Have some sort of temporary base to regroup and stock-up on supplies (my above wal-mart example is the child of years of working at wal-mart and shouldn't be used by everyone.) your place just needs to be secure, even if only temporarily, and it should have all of your supplies in it. It should be easily accessable to you but not easily stumbled upon by looters. In the event of the base being compromised then go directly to your secondary and/or permanent base.

-always carry a weapon of some sort and always be skilled with it. training yourself with a variety of firearms is usually a good idea.

-everyone in the group should have a role. (i.e. weapons expert, navigator, first-aid, etc.) and be good at it.

- Keep your body in good shape, if you cant run at least a mile without stopping then you're in for a world of hurt.

-zombies arent the only danger out there. Once the s**t hit's the fan, government will collapse and all of the criminals that were suppressed by the law will be free to do as they please.

-Finding a good base before the zombies rise is paramount. You can either make your own, or find an abandoned structure that was designed to keep people out, or keep people in. A high School may be a good example of this. Many high schools have high chain-link fencing, bulletproof glass, security systems and doors that automatically lock. Many of them also have a cafeteria that can sustain a small group for months, their own generators, internet connection, hell most of the schools with a JROTC program have their own rifles, granted their behind locked doors but if you want to get to them you'll have to turn off the power for a moment to open the doors. but thats a risk worth taking.

-for traveling everyone should have their own water, map, firearm, sidearm, and melee weapon. They should also have a med-kit, sleeping gear(usually for somewhere off the ground), and cooking gear.

-picking a weapon: I recommend a basic .9 mm pistol with a silencer as your primary weapon. It's small, light and with the silencer it doesnt make alot of noise. It can be modded to hold more ammo per clip. your secondary weapon should depend on your mission. If your going somewhere with tight spaces, opt for the sawed off shotgun, as it can clear tight spaces easily. If your going into a place with wide open spaces, take a sniper rifle and get somewhere high up and cover your men down on the ground(while occasionally checking behind you or have someone else watch your back). When your not sure about the area, have different members carry different sidearms. Your melee weapon should be your weapon of last resort, and the one you keep closest to you. I recommend a Tanto or a Wakizashi. The tanto is a dagger like version of the katana. It's small easy to carry, and usually has a blood grove for easy removal after stabbing. A wakizashi is a more practical weapon than a Katana. While a katana is a great weapon by all means, it's too large and bulky to be used as much more then a temporary weapon once the outbreak starts. The wakizashi is smaller, lighter and can be used one-handed with ease. due to it's smaller size it doesnt have that extra distance, but the trade off is more control and a more manuverable weapon. like the tanto it also has a blood groove for easy removal post stabbing. I personally recommend staying away from crowbars, while they make a great temporary weapon they will eventually get stuck in the head of the zombie your trying to kill because it doesnt have a blood groove.

....wow this is big

You forgot to add:

* Never go back for an injured person.
* If you're squeamish, get over it. Fast.
* Don't use any weapon that can be turned against you.
* Train with any and all weapons you use or might have to use.

Heh. With limited resources you'll need to consider any resource available. That includes other people.
You might imagine it once you're starving. :p

It's easy.
Study the brain.

Why worry about destroying the brain in a quick getaway when a ball-peen hammer pop to the Motor Cortex renders the thing a slab of meat that can't even blink?

Stuck in a tight spot?
Pop it in the back of the head and destroy the Occipital Lobe, blind it while never having to touch the eyes.

Bash it in it's Thalmus Gland, watch as it stops feeling hunger and just stands there.

Carry a strong hammer and study up, it may save you in a close quarter fight for your life.
