"The foxbun, I'm more interested in the camp" dappled said simply, whispering it towards nightmare as he spared her a glance, what was going on behind those eyes of hers eh, what kind of thoughts? He couldn't fathom why he wanted to know such a thing, but this female made him curious. As did this story! Why would a goddess need food other then a show of good faith from the trio..

Maybe that was it, a story of faith, or some other interesting trait that belonged to their people. Dappled had to smile at himself, realizing that even in the way fish bones told his story he was polite. It was fresh and exciting to see the personality of the story teller reflected in the story itself, that polite intrigue fish bones seemed to have. Tail curling slightly about his body before flicking back, finding it slightly odd that wildfire had yet to say anything, not even so much as a whisper of curiosity from the golden buck. Ah but maybe he was wiser then they realized, maybe this story wasnt as exciting to him..

Fish Bones smiles, hearing the chatter. "You'll find out in a moment." He says to Nightmare-of-Roses, before turning to Dappled Despair. "A camp is where one sleeps, but that is not their home. It is a makeshift home while traveling."

Hoping that explains it well enough, Fish Bones clears his throat, ready to finish the story. "Patiently, the three waited for the foxbun to return. After what seemed like a long time, he did return, walking slowly and looking forlorn. When he stops it is apparent he has found nothing for the doe. 'I am sorry, I'm not fast to catch a fish, nor can I climb to gather berries.'" Fish Bones adds a mournful tone to his voice. "Glancing at the fire the foxbun gets an idea. 'As I have nothing to give you, I'll give myself. I'll jump into the fire and when I'm cooked you can eat me.'" As he speaks, his voice lends a small measure of excitement to the foxbun's words. At the end of this statement, though, Fish Bones does not continue, again pausing for dramatic effect.

Nightmare turned to look at Dappled Despair when he whispered to her. She chose not to worry about the camp. It didn't interest her much because she had no idea what it was. So instead she was concerned about the missing foxbun. Saying nothing, she just tilted her head at him and smiled. As she looked back to Fish Bones, she giggled a little, wondering if her sudden smile would baffle the blue buck.

At Fish Bone's words, she grew a little impatient, but soon enough her question was answered and she sat contentedly until the buck spoke of the foxbun's offer. "What?" she exclaimed, almost standing straight up, but collapsing back down. "Now why would the Foxbun do such a thing? Get itself killed?" She said. She didn't care she was interrupting. The story was gripping her tightly.

"Sometimes," Wildfire-storm said softly, "Great rewards come to those who make great sacrifices."

He paused for a while, looking thoughtfully at the treetops, before continuing.

"And sometimes people just get themselves killed in vain."

Dappled despair had to do a double take, blinking twice as the nightmare doe just smiled at him..eh..what kind of grin was that! He shook his head softly, huffing beneath his breath and listening in on the story. The sudden twist, the sadness of the poor foxbun not having anything for the goddess except for his own life..

"There's no gift in death..not unless its for something meaningful, and the goddess already has food from the others" he sounded a bit upset as he said it, the thought of the foxbun dying left a bad taste in his mouth..even if it was just a story. Glancing at the golden buck and frowning, it would be sad if he gave his life all in vain, then again would the goddess allow such a thing?
"Well?" hooves scraping the earth slightly as he gave fish bones an impatient glance, he had to know what happened now!!

Fish Bones' lips quark in a slight smile at Dappled Despair's impatience. With out a thought spared to prolonging the story, he continues.

"Before he has even finished speaking, he leaps into the flames. Quickly, much faster then one would think the old doe could move, she darts forward, her snout going into the fire, grabbing the nape of his neck between her teeth. As she pulls him out of the fire, she gives her neck a flick, tossing him onto her back." He pauses here, again looking at Dappled Despair, then shifting his gaze to Nightmare-of-Roses. ""That is a kind offer, but you should never do yourself harm for the benefit of another." She turns her head, regarding him, and smiles. "For your generosity, I shall reward you by taking you to live with me on the moon." Even as she speaks, she starts to ascend, leaving the swamp behind as the moon grows ever larger. To this day the foxbun lives there, and can be seen on clear nights when the moon is full."

Fish Bones lets his voice fall silent, not bothering with a saying such as 'the end'. Simply allowing his cessation of speech convey this is truly the story's end. He walks his eyes over the group, part of him feeling as though he'd butchered the story. Too many years have passed since he first heard it, and as well, since he last told it.

Nightmare blinked as the green buck stopped speaking. Was that it? She stared, waiting for him to open his mouth again, but he never did. Huh. Somehow she expected a more..dramatic ending? Well, the foxbun only spent a moment in the fire. Not much excitement there. But she still smiled at the buck, showing she was a little interested in what happened in the story. She thought about his friends being left alone on earth, but only for a moment as her thoughts shifted. She wondered if she had any stories to tell the group..

Wildfire-storm smiled and nodded his silent approval of the story. Fish Bones had done a good job telling the old fable and it reminded him of other stories... Stories to be told. But for now the storyteller needed to be properly thanked for sharing this moment with them.

"Well done," he said, "I liked the way you told it."

((OOC: I've got some RL issues at the moment so feel free to skip me if I stall things for more than a day or so. I'd love to have Wildfire-storm tell a story when things calm down, but someone else can go first.))

Dappled Despair let out a small sigh of relief, a bit proud in his assumption that the goddess would never allow such an innocent creature to give its life just for her sake! Giving Fish Bones a slow proud grin, tail swishing pleasingly behind him, he took a moment to glance over at nightmare, ears lifting curiously as if in question to whether she'd liked the story or not. Even if he end could have been longer he was still quite happy with it.

"It was alright.." the buck shrugged, as close as he could get to giving a verbal compliment, the look on his face really should have said it all. "Would anyone else like to go next?" dappled hadn't expected to get caught up in this whole..story telling business, yet even as he asked he had a story of his own on his mind, maybe not the happiest of story's, but definitely one he felt was rather befitting for the moment.

Fish Bones nods, a smile spreading over his lips. "Thank you." He looks around at the others, wondering who will go next, and what story will be told. His eyes catch on Dappled Despair, the blue buck looking as though he has a story. Fish Bones raises a brow, as if to ask 'Are you going next?'

Dappled Despair tosses Fish bones a small, but sly grin, looking very much as if he's holding in a secret. He catches the bucks gaze and nods to his curious look, taking a small step forwards..
Of course he had a story, not one worth hearing, honestly even he didn't like hearing himself tell story's. Still it might be fun, to just this once, tell this particular story. "If no one else does..then..I might have something to share" he shrugs nonchalantly casting a dull looking gaze about the small crowd, even though he's truly anxious on the inside. Naturally one had to play to his audience, and if they didn't wish to hear, well then he certainly wouldn't speak!

Wildfire-storm smiled at the prospect of another story. This was shaping up to be a good day, and he couldn't wait to hear what Dappled Despair would tell them about. He tried to decide on a story of his own for later, but for now he would listen to this story and not let his mind wander too much.

"What's your story then," he asked politely, and allowed one of his legs to rest as he lifted his hoof slightly from the marshy ground.

((finally have a story, though i'll wait until after dappled goes :] ))

Nightmare-of-Roses shifted her weight into another comfortable position, stretching one of her legs out. She watched as the dark blue buck stood up. Apparently it was his turn. She sniffled indifferently and with bored eyes awaited his tale. They were peculiar folk, though and she cocked her head in curiosity.

Looking to Dappled Despair, Fish Bones nods. "Feel free to start when ever you like." he states. True, he's not the leader here, but as they came to hear his story, he wants to be certain no one wanting a turn is left out.
