Kal nodded her head at the pup's story about how Raven came to be able to eat the rotted meat. She herself had heard some stories from the pack that lived near her old one, the one that had strong beliefs in a lot of things similar to Nausicaa. "Yes, I think I've heard of that before.. about Raven using his tricks to learn the secret."

After that, it seemed, the blue pup was quite interested to hear about how she caught the fleet-footed rabbit.

Smiling and even chuckling a little to herself, Kalia gave the pup a motherly lick to the head. "I caught it like I do everything else. Patience, young pup, that's the most important trait that one needs in order to be a successful hunter."

The gray She paused for a moment. Then she continued on. "Hunting does not mean just rushing in and if you have the strongest bite you have the best hunting skills. Nonono.. patience is much more important. It is foolish to rush in without knowing the being in which you are hunting. What if it is healthy? Then you are dead. What if it is too sick to even defend itself? That might be a problem. Very sick prey means very sick predators. Our stomachs are not perfect."

Another pause.

"I waited until I found the perfect rabbit. It was plump and slow, yet healthy too. I waited until the perfect moment when it was distracted and not very well-protected. Once he lowered his head to get some food, that was when I rushed forward and caught it off-guard." It was always good to use the element of surprise.

"He was foolish, and that's why he became my meal. Only the wisest and most cunning survive. Brutes may survive, but only because their strength is large enough to hold off death for a time."

Nausicaa wriggled for a moment, her wide blue eyes unconsciously taking in all the information that Kalia was speaking. She idled her paws as the older wolf spoke, the end of her long and thin tail swishing about with gentle thumps. "Raven is very cunning-" She grinned, having a fondness for the clever creature that had led her to many kills. "He's the smartest, I think."

She broke into a soft and airy chorus of giggles as Kalia licked her on the top of her head. She ended up squealing and hopping in careful circles, eager to hear the rest of the story. She felt suddenly so filled with energy now that she had a full belly. It was probably bad to be exerting so much, but in this time she had been alone, she'd very rarely gotten the chance to act as a child.

"Yes-yes!" Nausicaa chanted, nodding her head. "I try to be patient-! But, sometimes it's hard." She frowned, sinking down and smiling sheepishly.

Her ears swiveled, cautiously regarding the note about an animal being too sickly to fight. She'd never heard that before, but it made sense in her mind. Whatever made the animal sick could make them sick too- bad ghosts. Poison.

She smiled, her star struck fur slightly shifting as she squirmed about. She was trying to picture herself being able to so quickly ambush a brilliant hare, and leap upon it, snapping it up before it ever knew what was coming. Friend-Kalia had to be a fantastic runner to do that. She wondered if she'd ever be able to run with the wind. Maybe if she had been named something like wind...

"Wise animals don't fall for ghost tricks." She concluded, and shook her head. "The hare should have known not to keep close to his friends and eat other grass." She concluded, with a brief moment of silence. "-I hope I'm not silly enough to fall for ghosts tricks." She frowned.

Kalia nodded in agreement with the pup. "Yes, Raven is quite smart. That's one of the reasons he can eat so many varities of foods." She envied him... just a little.

Then, when Nausicaa said that she had tried to be patient but that it was hard, she nodded again. "Yeah.. it's hard to be patient most of the time, but if you try hard enough and practice it can be really easy." She smiled and licked the top of the little one's head again, having been delighted at the reaction she had gotten earlier.

Kal even chuckled once again as she saw the blue pup squirm about, seeming to picture herself in some sort of situation. It was obvious she had been glad to hear the story of her catching the rabbit. That was good... there was no use in a story if the listener had absolutely no interest.

"I don't think you're silly enough to fall for... tricks." She left out the ghost part, having been not quite sure what the other meant by it. "Maybe as a pup you might fall for some.. but that's understandable. When you're all big and strong, though, nothing will be able to trick you!" Hey, it didn't hurt to give a pup a little ego boost and some confidence. Hopefully, though, Nausicaa didn't take it too much to heart and start acting as if she was invincible.

Again, the gray She licked the top of her head in a motherly fashion. It seemed pups stimulated a feeling that was only shown rarely otherwise.

Nausicaa smiled softly, taking it in with account. She wasn't sure if she'd be smart enough to not fall for the tricks of ghosts, although she had tricked *them* once before. She wondered if Friend-Kalia would take better to the story then friend-Kiba... But she decided she'd keep that to herself. She was beginning to learn that not many wolves, if any, in these woods shared the same beliefs as she did. This disappointed her some.

She wriggled carefully, and smiled up at her as the older wolf flicked her tongue against her head. It'd been a long time since she'd had an physical connection with another creature, not since she had gotten lost and left home for good as a ghost. She was even beginning to believe it, until Kalia was able to touch her- and as most well knowing creatures knew you don't touch ghosts. It was how you told them apart from the others.

Nausicaa flicked her ears, considering Kala's belief on age. She wondered if she'd really get any smarter as an adult. It was true, all the adults she knew were smarter then her...but she didn't feel like anything, not even time, could change how she felt and how she thought. Would she wake up one day and be a different person.

Careufly, she looked upwards, squinting her blue eyes. "One time I tricked ghosts." She smiled softly, and shifted her tail.

(( ^^ That's okay. But I'm wondering... did you get the name Nausicaa from the Odyssey or Greek mythology perhaps? ))

Ghosts... there was that term again. Confused by what the younger one meant by it exactly, she tilted her head again. For a moment she wasn't responding to the other, seeming to have her attention caught on something else and her eye transfixed on something beyond the pup. Her bad eye seemed to glaze over a little more for a second.

Then, in a split moment, Kal returned to her normal and former state.

Licking Nausicaa's head again, she then asked: "Oh did you now?" Her tone was playful, teasing almost. She liked this blue one; strange but nonetheless interesting and good company.

"Tell me of this time when you tricked 'ghosts'. I'm curious." And she really was.

(( The name is indeed Greek. XD Of that little princess. I recieved fondness to it though from the old movie Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind, but that is where the name originates from both the movie and my little fuzz ball. ))

The night blue puppy smiled softly, the end of her paler blue tail swaying. She had a slight hunch that there would be a chance that Friend-Kalia wouldn't believe her. But that was okay, she'd already adjusted to these strange wolves. They must live lucky lives to never be so troubled...

"Well-" Nausicaa spoke, puffing out her chest softly and gently patting her tail against the ground. She was a grand story-teller. "In my clan, qitunbaabaitka that is, we lived in a Dark Forest. Since I was very little, we knew not to ever stay too long within it. That was the place of our anscestors, and of my people... But, they said that a wolf, a kisim, came and disturbed the spirits who lived within the wood. That was bad- we took our dead to that land and that was where they were supposed to stay. So our family is cursed, you see." She nodded slowly, and blinked. "Yea- but I wasn't old enough to know any of this... All I know, is that it happened when my mother was a little girl. And she said, she didn't remember it well."

"Our tribe was haunted by these spirits, but they were bad ghosts. Not good ghost spirits. Now and then they'd come and take one of us away, and then they'd come back as ghosts too- My mother used to say, if a pup get's lost for more then a day it always comes back as a ghost. That's what happened to me." She frowned, and wriggled. "But so, I got lost-" She inhaled, finally getting to the exciting parts.

"I was alone in the wood." She said rather dramatically. "I knew I couldn't go home anymore, or my family would think I was dead. They might even kill someone to make me go away-" She didn't particularly care of sacrifices. "But, so, I was alone in the wood. And I was walking towards the Western border, because I'd never been that direction before, and the wind was blowing that way. But before long, I realized it wasn't the wind at all- it was a ghost!"

She paused, for dramatic effect.

"I didn't see the ghost, because you know, you can't look at them. That's how they steal your name. So I ran, but I realized I couldn't run like big wolves- you know? So, I pretended to be a rock. I said, "Make me a stone, make me a stone!" And then, it walked around me, and left. I tricked it, it couldn't tell me from a rock!" She grinned, her tail wagging. It was a rather grand story, Nausicaa had to admit. It did not occur to her to be in the least big logical about the event.

(( Oh, I see. I've never heard of the movie but it sounds interesting. :3 Yeah, I'm reading The Odyssey in my English class, and in the sixth chapter the princess Nausicaa comes in. ))

Kalia, like a good sort of audience, stayed still through the whole story. Gray ears flicked this way and that every time there was an exciting part. This Nausicaa was really a good storyteller... reminded her somewhat of Rojo back home. She was the babysitter/storyteller of the pack.

Since the pack had a peace treaty with the human village that they lived next to, each pup had to be told the story of how one of their great alphas did this and the hardships that he faced within the pack because some of the wolves despised humans and didn't want a treaty with them. The story ended up with the alpha prevailing and keeping peace in the pack along with the humans. There seemed to be no tension between the two.

Each pup was told that and brought up to love humans, not hate them. Rojo, since she babysat almost every single pup because the parents went out on hunts or other pack businesses, told that story to the children over and over so they wouldn't forget. Of course, she was careful enough to make sure that every time she told it it was more interesting, just so the pups wouldn't get bored and shrug it off.

This blue pup right in front of Kal reminded her of that.

"That was an interesting story, Nausicaa. You're a good storyteller, I'm sure any friendly pack would want you to tell them of your journeys and other things like that." She nodded. "I'm glad you were able to trick that ghost, it would have been bad if it would've caught you." And she was serious.

Again, she licked the top of the pup's head, in a motherly fashion of course. It was strange... she believed the story. Not because she believed in ghosts and hauntings and what not... but because it just seemed reasonable. For some reason, she thought that it was possible for the dead to come back as ghosts... perhaps because they couldn't move on.

Did that mean the gray She believed in ghosts, then?

Nausicaa giggled slightly, and rubbed the end of her nose, genuinely embarrassed. However, she did find herself a rather prolific story-teller, if she did say so herself. Or at least, her brothers and sisters used to prefer her stories over her old aunts, and she was the Dream Teller. But her old aunt was a seer, so her stories were taken much more seriously. But at least Nausicaa could make her stories fun!

"Do you think so?" Nausicaa smiled, tilting her head to the side. She wondered truly if Kalia meant it, or had been speaking nicely to her as a child. She was young, but she was not young enough to not be aware that adults often said things they did not mean to children.

"It would have been bad." She whispered softly, commenting further on Kalia's reflection on the ghost that had tried to steal her away. She remembered it well, even if she had never seen it with her own eyes. Some things you didn't need to see to remember...

"But I am good at being sneaky." She said pleasantly, and nodded her head. "I don't think the ghost ever had a chance."

Kalia smiled kindly at the smaller wolf. "Of course. Everyone likes to hear a good story, and a good story is even better if someone is a great storyteller, such as yourself." Again she licked the top of Nausicaa's head in a motherly fashion. And she meant what she said. Back where she was from, there had been other packs with multiple storytellers, just in case a story was extra long and needed more than one wolf to recite it.

Wolves around her old pack's area were very superstitious to say the least.

Then her ears flicked as the pup whispered something. "Yes... it would have been very bad." A slight frown came over her face as she rested her head on the ground next to the pup. She made sure that her good eye was facing her, though, so she could still see her.

That frown soon turned into a smile as the blue female sounded confident in herself. It was always good to have some self-esteem. "Of course, that ghost never even had the slightest of chances. You are way to sneaky for that." Okay, now she was just kinda saying that to be nice, but only because she didn't know whether Nausicaa really was sneaky or not...
PostPosted: Thu Nov 24, 2005 6:36 pm

Nausicaa smiled softly, as if she had registered the older wolf's conflicting notions on her sneakiness. In all honestly, the small blue pup wasn't so sure herself sometimes... She frowned for a moment, and flicked her eyes away. "I haven't met too many people that like stories, Friend-Kalia." She sighed. "Sometimes...I guess people have no time for stories. They don't say they're true. People only care about...nothing. No stories."

She was glad that atleast Kalia liked her stories. She couldn't be sure if the female was humoring her on that either, but it was more then she had grasped in recent days. Carefully, she took in a slow breath of cool air.

"Where does Friend-Kalia come from?" She suddenly asked. "I come from someplace else. Does Kalia too? Or do you come from here?" This strange wood...

Kal really had liked the pup's stories, she wasn't lying about that. Of course, being oblivious to the other's thoughts, she had no reason to try and convince Nausicaa that her stories were liked.

"Yeah.. some just care about hunting and making babies, they don't have 'time' for stories. Some just want power and control over everyone else..." Those type of wolves disgusted her. "Some that just want love and don't even care about others and their tales." Koro and Shetani.

A moment's pause... then her ears flicked forwards as the blue female asked her where she came from and told where she was from. So, they weren't all that different, eh?

"I come from far away, too. My pack didn't suit me much, so I left." For now the gray she-wolf would spare Nausicaa the horrible story.
PostPosted: Fri Nov 25, 2005 9:23 am

Nausicaa nodded seriously. "Yea. No one ever wants stories anymore. But I like stories...what good is living if you don't talk about it? Even if stuff is not true, there is reason for it..." Her head swung up. "Making babies? How do they do that? Have you made babies?" She squeaked. Maybe she'd like some babies! She'd always found little puppies very cute. Her little body wriggled about, as she mused this over.

Nausicaa smiled softly, the star pelted blue wolf flopping carefully over Kalia's large paws. She heaved, and gently flicked her tail about. "I come from far away too...Lots of walking...but I didn't want to leave home. But I guess, sometimes you have to go...if that's what you're supposed to do."

"Well then," Kal started, offering the pup a funny grin, "I guess we shall be the ones to enjoy like the most, eh?" She then licked the other's forehead in that same motherly way. It seemed all too amusing that they may share the same beliefs. And what was even more weird was that she reminded the gray wolfess of the superstitious pack back home.

At that thought, she became suddenly curious. "Say..." she was about to ask something when Nausicaa asked how wolves make babies. Oh great, she groaned silently.

"Making babies.. it's.. something older wolves do." Had she ever 'made babies'? Good lord NO! "Me? Oh, nonononono... I've never made babies. Normally wolves make babies to keep their bloodline alive and to give the back some sort of heir or whatever else." Yes.. strange wolves those were.

"Me, I go against nature and seek for love, not succession." Of course, that could be because she had nothing to pass onto her pups if she ever had any.
PostPosted: Sat Nov 26, 2005 9:38 am

Nausicaa smiled, her little puppy tongue lolling with pleasantries. She liked that Kalia liked her stories, and stories in general. For a while, she was beginning to fear she might have been the only one.

But this part about making babies- She paid attention to this! Maybe if she couldn't make friends her own age, she'd MAKE friends her own age. But, with a sigh, she gathered that it was something only older wolves could do. "Older wolves always get to do neat things like that..." She sighed, and rubbed the end of her nose. "What's an heir? Is it like air?" She questioned, rolling onto her back and looking up at Kalia from on top of her paws.

Nausicaa continued to muse to herself. "I know what love means." She said in a dignified manner, and sighed. "But, I don't know what love feels like. I just know ghosts." She frowned, a bit dramatically. "I don't think ghosts are the same as love." At least- she certainly hoped not!

This was just the strangest conversation the older female had had with anyone. Ever. Never before had a pup asked her these kinds of questions, ones that she wasn't quite sure what the answer was. Perhaps it was because her self-absorbed alpha had kept her away from the pups so Koro and Shetani could have her, and so the pups always questioned Rojo--the babysitter--instead of Kal.

"Well, making babies is a magical occurance, but I've heard that carrying the babies before they are ready to come out of the mama hurts like heck." Why was she talking about this? "Even when they are ready to come out, it still hurts the mama quite a bit.

An heir... how could she explain what an heir was?

"An heir is like... well, it's... hm." She fumbled slightly, searching for the right words. "It's like a prince who's the son of a king. When the kind dies, that prince takes over. He is the heir." Did she know about kings and princes and all that, or just alphas?

Then, when the subject went back to love, a slight frown crossed her face. Love... already she was so old yet never had she felt 'love'. "No, no, ghosts are not the same thing as love." How would she know?

"And... I've never experienced love either... not in all of my years..."
