Brow furrowed, Tari trailed after Varun. Despite her worry, she was so glad that she wasn't alone. Imagine being lost and all by herself! Tari wouldn't know what to do. Thankfully Varun did. When the fishy Frei slammed his hand on the desk, Tari jumped, but her shock quickly changed to amazement at how Varun handled the shop lady.
"Wh-what?" the shop assistant looked at the two strange creatures on front of her. One of them she vaguely recognised - hadn't the golden one been in the store just recently. "This, uh, girl's mother?"
Tari waited at the lady stopped and thought about it. Her clawed gauntlets twisted around one another as Tari wrung her hands together. Please please please know where her mama was!
"I think she left," the lady eventually said. "I don't remember her buying anything, either." The woman scowled, as though that was clearly the most important problem any of them had.
A tiny whimper left Tari. Her mama had left? Tari had been allowed to go places on her own before, and sometimes mama left her in a park or cafe, but Tari always had to promise not to leave first and she always knew what time mama would be coming back.
Without realising it, she huddled closer to Varun. "What we do now?"

...useless.
Varun hiss loudly at the cashier, much as a hot pan does when dunked in cold water. Green eyes flashing, he turned his shoulder and put himself between the foolish human and Tari. Without further thought, he took the angel's arm protectively and started towards the exit of the store. "Tarimama not here. Waste time." He pushed out the door, holding it long enough for his new friend to slip through before slamming the door with quite a bit more strength than necessary. Idiot woman. That would show her, not keeping tabs.
Fortunately, the redhead had a plan. This miracle was occurring with more and more frequency. Strangely enough, it turned out plans usually yielded a result that Varun found pleasant. Brushing his hair behind his hair and taking a deep breath, the young Raevan turned and tried to catch Tariel's attention.
"Kinsey. Mine. Finder of lost things." He nodded sagely and reached forward to take Tar's arm, leading her in the direction he had last seen his irksome guardian. She wasn't too hard to find, the red gems under her eye were very distinguishable. Picking his way through the crowd, he led Tari right to his guardian. "Kinsey, help now? Tarimama lost...uh..." The Frei waved his hand expressively and pointed to himself. "...uh. Lost." He looked at Kinsey expectantly.
The young woman frowned, trying to figure out what the hell her Raevan was trying to tell her. Well, maybe Varun's friend would be able to explain things more clearly. "Tari, is that what he called you? I'm Kinsey, Varun's...uh...mother." Oh god, that made her feel old.
"Mine," Varun chimed in, most helpfully.
Kinsey shook her head and sighed. "Yes, Vars. So, anyways. Are you lost, Tari? Did you need help finding someone?" Please, please let it be that simple!

Tari perked up as Varun took charge. He spoke of his Kinsey-mama and how she could find things. And he also took her arm as they left the store, which was quite nice. Tari had held hands before, usually with Sa'ida and they'd swung their arms wildly, but having her arm tucked in against someone else was quite nice. Very reassuring - even if she was lost, she wasn't alone. Varun was a great friend!
"Okies, find Varun's Kinsey," she agreed. They took off together, and in no time at all, found the woman in question.
"Yes!" she nodded emphatically as Kinsey asked if Tari needed help. "Tari is lost! Mama gone. Well, Tari gone first, see Varun. But Tari and Varun go back and now mama gone!" She paused, eyes large and damp, bottom lip wibbling. For good measure, she added, "Please help?"
Honestly, this was worse than the tragedies in the soap operas Tari liked to watch!

Kinsey blinked; Tari's grasp on the spoken language was not much better than her own charge's. It had its own endearing quality to it, though, and give how very...difficult Varun could be to teach. Well, it was better not to be curious and to just leave that as it was. Besides, she had other things to take care of. Tari was lost and, having explained the situation much better than the Leviathan, gave the young woman a good idea of what to do.
"Alright, you two, come with me. I know how we can find your mother, Tari," Kinsey added with an uncertain smiling, turning back into the crowd of people.
Varun, having no better ideas himself, simply shrugged and took Tariel's hand. There was no way he was going to let her get lost in this crowd! One lost was more than enough. Given, picking his way through the sea of people wasn't that hard. Agile and lithe, the Frei probably could have threaded his way through even if he hadn't been given a large berth on account of his lack of anything chest down. It was nice to be spared the effort, though.
A few minutes later found the trio at a kiosk. Kinsey leaned forward and spoke to the man behind the desk, turning back to the female Raevan after a moment. "Alright, Tari, what's your mother's name? This gentleman can ask for her over this loudspeaker, right? And she'll come here. She's probably looking for you, you know, so if she knows where to find you, problems will be solved!"
Varun quirked an eyebrow, wings and fins slowly rising again. He quivered softly and did not let go of his new friend, giving the 'gentle man' behind the desk a sharp look. He did not appear very gently. He was large, and looming, and the seasonal Frei did not trust him. Well, he didn't trust any male, and this one was no exception. Varun gave Kinsey a snort and tossed his head.
"Illogical."

Tari gaped in surprise as Kinsey immediately informed them she knew how to find Tari's mama. Her hand tightened on Varun's, squeezing it as they floated after the human. Varun had been right after all - his Kinsey-mama did know how to find lost things.
"Varun plan is brilliant!" she enthused. Her eyes sparkled and she floated higher, almost bouncing along in mid-air. "His Kinsey-mama so smart, yes."
When they stopped, Tari inspected the desk and the man behind it with great interest. How would this find her mama? Was the man magic? Did he know her mama? He was very imposing... She supposed this was what televee meant when they said they were sending 'thugs' to get items or monies that they were owed. That was kind of like finding a lost thing, right? Could this thug find her mama?
Kinsey's explanation was a little confusing. A loud speaker? So the man had a very loud voice and would yell for her mama? Tari shrugged. Better than Tari screaming herself.
"Ill-og-ee-kal?" Tari sounded out the word Varun used. Blinking, she peered at Varun. "What that?"
Maybe Varun was also concerned about the man being loud enough to reach everyone? In any case, it was best to answer Kinsey, since the lady was being nice enough to help.
"Tari mama is Kali." She blinked at the man. "Mister Thug yell loud, okies? Tari is not liking this lost."
Now she knew how those poor people on that island felt.

Kinsey sighed and rolled her eyes at her charge. "Ignore him. He just likes to quote things he heard on TV. I doubt he even knows what that means," the woman assured Tari. She knew her plan would work. Leaning over the desk, she spoke to the mall cop again, leaving the two Raevans to themselves.
Varun opened his mouth to reply to Tari, to insist he did know what his new, super-long word meant when the loudspeakers crackled to life. Wings and fins shot out to the side and Varun flew backwards, grabbing Tariel and hoarding her close. He knew that man was dangerous, he knew it! That was a horrible, horrible hissing noise, surely he was going to attack!
"Miss Kali, Tari is waiting for you at the information desk. Miss Kali, your...Tari is waiting for you at the information desk," the voice boomed.
And then everything went silent.
Varun blinked and looked around. That was...strange. The voice had come from the ceiling, even though he had seen the man right there. He was most certainly not one of the Ceiling Men Kinsey talked about now and then. He did seem to have powers, though. Twitching his wings, he released his death grip on Tariel and gave her a thoughtful look. "You okay?" He tossed his head in the direction of the strange. "He not hurt, right? You okay?"
Kinsey sighed and slapped a hand to her forehead. Oh, would the wonders never cease.

"Televee knows everything," Tari wisely informed Kinsey. She'd picked up her fair share of words from televee, but at least hers told her what they meant. Maybe Varun's televee wasn't as good as Tari's? Although it was a bigger word than Tari knew, so maybe hers wasn't teaching her all she needed to know? It had certainly assumed that everyone knew about the 'must-have-tummies-before-you-can-kiss' rule. "Should ask televee what means."
Suddenly there was loud crackling and screeching, followed by the loudest voice Tari had ever heard from a normal human. She jumped and meeped, followed quickly by another meep as Varun grabbed her tightly. Large eyes blinked several times, as wide as they could go.
"Tari not hurt," she eventually answered. She didn't feel in any pain. "Just... not expecting that." The loud voice, or being swept up into Varun's overprotective hold.
She eyed off the man behind the desk. "Thug has biiiiig voice. Very loud speaker, yes. Mama come now?"
It took a few minutes, but eventually a faint swearing could be heard, growing in volume. A woman with dark red hair appeared, flustered and walking at great speed towards the desk - only barely holding herself back from running.
"Mama!" Tari launched herself at the woman.
Rocked backwards form the force of the speeding Raevan, Kali huffed. Dropping a few bags onto the ground, she awkwardly patted the relieved Raevan on the back. "That's what you get for running off," Kali rolled her eyes. "There I was, out the back arguing with the stupid owner, and suddenly I'm being paged to come pick you up? What on earth possessed you to leave?!"
Over Tari's shoulder, Kali then spied the floating Raevan and the woman with him. "Don't tell me," Kali deadpanned. "Fishy."

Varun watched Tari reunite with her mother silently, tipping his head to one side as he slowly drifted back to his own guardian. Kinsey beamed at her charge and patted his shoulder. "See? Good job. You made her very happy," the young woman said, hoping it might be enough motivation to get Varun to behave in the future. "I think we can probably get going now, if you want. I got what I needed, anyways."
The Leviathan nodded thoughtfully, holding up a finger to his Kinsey before floating back over to Tariel. "Tari? Go home now, Varun. Kinseeeey says so." The Raevan shrugged and shook his head, holding his hands out helplessly as thought he was powerless to stop her. Which he was, ultimately, but it looked like his new friend would be staying with her mother anyways.
"Play again sometime, Varun and Tari. Good." He nodded to the warrior angel and offered a small wave. All good things must come to an end, after all.

Tari disengaged from her mother and flew back over to Varun. "Both home now, Tari and Varun," she said, a little sad because Varun was such a wonderful friend. She didn't want to day to be over, but it had been very tiring and emotional, after all. And if this playtime with Varun ended, then they could meet again another day. So there was a small upside, she supposed.
She brightened considerably as Varun also said they should meet again. "YES, play again. Definitely, yes. Varun... wonderful!"
In thanks for how amazing Varun had been today, Tari glomped him just as she had earlier that day. After hugging him tightly, she pressed her lips against his cheek in a big "mwah" kiss.
With a last beaming smile at Varun, Tari darted back to her mother's side. One clawed gauntlet slipped into her mother's hand, the other waving at Varun and Kinsey.
"Thank you for your assistance with Tariel-" Kali broke off her thanks as Tari landed a huge, smacking kiss on the male Raevan. When Tari returned and took her hand Kali looked down at her 'daughter' before leading her away. "By the way, Tari, kissing like that?"
"Yes?" Tari looked up, big eyes hopeful.
Kali continued, unrelenting. "Is going on your 'banned' list. No more kissing - boys or girls - until you're grown up."
Tari wilted.
