And something that's always interested me; people seem to think you could be doing science while THINKING you are doing magic. Okay, I get that; why can't you be doing magic when you think it's just science?

That's exactly what happens to one of my main characters - he was head mechanic on a project dealing with an experimental technology that is based on an invisible force (kind of like electricity, just far more unstable and... well, magic-y - still looking for a nice name, though rolleyes ), until the day he found out his special knack for dealing with this force was simply his talent for channeling magical energies... xp
(Mind you, in a world where you get thrown into a "sanatorium" simply for THINKING about magic.)

@Amossk: You can bet that even if this was about factions, I would still choose both (always up to take the risky border-line path wink ). This is the point where I would have to cheer for Yewish Nazis, but... heck, yes, that's a sick analogy! xp

yea, but as I said another reason is because I want to see wich people prefer most. like if you HAD to ahve either magic or technology, not both. And yes, its a sick analogy, but I am a sick person XD

While I really believe most of steampunk is about the "ghost in the machine", I think that if I absolutely had to choose, I'd prefer magic. While we find so many things fascinating that were great technological advancements in Victoria's day, to the layman, it seemed simply to be magic, explained away with cogs and steam. I prefer living in a world where I can't comprehend everything- life would be depressing if not for the unknown.

"There is something inside all of us that yearns not for reason but for mystery... not for penetrating clear thought but for the whisperings of the irrational... not for science but for wizardry disguised as science... not for rationally founded influence but for magic. " ~ Karl Jaspers

"I would rather live in a world where my life is surrounded by mystery than live in a world so small that my mind could comprehend it." ~Harry Emerson Fosdick

(If you couldn't tell, this is something I believe in strongly. Heh. ^^; )

So true. I do enjoy mystery and magic. I'm a part-time paranormal investigator irl even. And from my experiences I can say without a doubt magic and ghosts do exist. But the reason I chose technology is because I find magic to be too unreliable as means for getting things done. I also have a strong affiliation for clockworks, its almost like a fetish for me XD (I said almost)

Part time paranormal investigator?? Ghost Hunters style?? You are living my dream, friend. I would love to hear stories, your methods, so on... Please?
It would take a certain amount of creativity to make a clockwork fetish work out...

*grumble, mumble, mutter* Okay, since I already admitted I'd have to choose magic, anyway... I finally gave in and voted... xp

HARRR! And with my vote turned it into a 50/50 result - see, even when I'm not actively trying to go for perfect balance I somehow end up there! xp xp xp

its pretty even. THATS why I only gave 2 options. because technomancy would stand at 100%

Which, to me, is quite astonishing! In my experiences there are lots of Steampunks out there that harbour quite the aversion for magic, because they think it's just for lazy authors who use it to explain away what their lacking grasp of technology cannot deal with.

Since I'm, above all, into Steamfantasy, I'm quite delighted to see there are so many other fans who think that magic more often enriches a story instead of just being a cheap stylistic device for lazy authors!

(Feh - my room mate barely kept me from developing a whole science based on the magical energies in our background world - when I started writing down formulas, he kicked me really hard and told me to snap out of it. xp )

you are wrong sir! Technology would have at least one vote from me...

I like to think of technology as being earned through work and more trustworthy than arcana and mysticism.

Don't get me wrong. I love magic, I just trust technology far, far more.

it would take the vast majority of the pole though. Even so it is pretty even (though currently technology is ahead, yay techies X3)

it depends really. to me magic CAN be a cheep way to fit stuff together, but it can also be quite enthralling when used properly. I DO like magic, but I like technology more X3

I like the idea of magic better, and have to admit I am somewhat of a tree hugger at heart, but I am verry logic and mathematics based intellectually. I would have a hard time trusting magic since I can't see how it works or what causes it, so I have to go with technology, even though my heart wants magic.
