Dulcie took a few steps back then looked carefully at the log. She took a deep breath then dashed as fast as she could towards the river. She quickly made it from the snow to the end of the log then jumped, hoping she had the momentum to make it to the sand. She landed softly on the warm grainy shore then took a quick look back at the wintry wonderland they'd left behind. She then turned to Tihama and gave a wide smile. "Whoo! We made it!" she cheered.

For a few seconds, Tihamah just laughed and bounced in place, gleefully feeling the gritty sand get stuck between her footpads, hearing the barely perceptible whisper as it sought to bury her prints in itself. It felt great to be out of the cold. She turned and took a long breath of air, tinged with the desert's dry heat. She couldn't wait to start exploring. But first......she turned back toward the river and nodded to Dulcie. "We had better get a good drink if we're going into the desert; you never know when me might see water next."

"Really? But it looks a lot like a beach here! How could there be no water way off in the sand?" Dulcie didn't know much about the desert. She'd spent all of her time in the snow or the grass of the meadow never having to worry about much of anything. The idea of not finding water in the desert seemed slightly troubling and yet the thrill and adventure of exploring such a nice warm place sounded too thrilling to pass up.

Tihamah smiled at Dulcie, not unkindly but with high amusement. "There's a reason there are hardly any green growing things in the desert; areas with water are few and far between. There are times when it seems as though there ARE places to get water, but half the time they'er just mirages; pictures you see that aren't real. But don't worry; there are ways sometimes of finding water when there doesn't seem to be any." She reached the river's edge and began to drink.

"Oh." Concerned with the idea of not finding water during their exploration, Dulcie followed suit and began to drink from the river. Her mind wandered as she did so, wondering what sort of adventure they would have and what sort of neat things they could find. It was certainly going to be a new experience.

Eager to get started, Tihamah finished her drink and sat there, tamping her feet impatiently waiting for Dulcie to finish. She couldn't wait to rush headlong into the desert, where she had always felt she belonged. She wasn't quite sure what she would do once she got there, but she was confident that she would know once she got there. "Are you about ready? I think it's good that we get started before it gets too late."

Dulcie finished as soon as she could, eager to go exploring. She'd never been to a place like the desert, but she'd never really wondered too much about it. She'd liked their side of the river with the meadow and the beach and the forest, satisfied with all there was to see and do there. She'd never imagined going to the desert... "Okay! But you lead. I think you know what you're doing..."

Tihamah laughed, thinking then that she had never laughed and smiled so much since she had arrived. "Only a little more than you; it seems like it's been so long since I was here last. But don't worry; I'm sure I'll remember more as we go along." With that, she started out, setting her paws down carefully in the shifting sand, feeling the warmth as it oozed from the grains and settled into her paws. She knew that they were going to need that warmth if they were caught out in the open sands after dark. Which reminded her......she turned and called back to Dulcie. "By the way if you see anything crawling around, stay away from them. The creepy-crawlies don't usually come out until after dark, but you can't be too careful."

Dulcie followed behind, basking in the comfortable warmth of the desert air. She found it lovely, like summer days only without the grass and mud, which was good because Dulcie hated mud. She paused then listened to Tihama's advice and nodded, making a mental note. Her mind then wandered on what may be crawling in the sand around them...She shivered, catching up with Tihama.

Tihamah reached the top of a dune and looked out across the sands, marveling at the split scene of sandy brown and clear blue. The sun sent slivers of mirror-like mirages playing across the sands in a shimmering dance. It almost felt like being inside a giant hourglass. It was so beautiful, it brought a sandy tear to her eye.
"Isn't it wonderful? And to think that every sand dune hides a secret, from the lowliest scorpion's nest to the largest of kingly treasures. All waiting for someone to find." She bounded in the air and began sliding down in a puff of powder-fine sand.

Dulcie thought about all of the possible adventure waiting in the dunes as she followed Tihamah. It all sounded really exciting...So much so she had little to say for once. She took in all the sights of the place as she went along, everything so different from back home. When she reached the top of the dune and looked over the vast desert lands before them she was amazed. It was a wonderland of sand, the warm orange-yellows spreading as far as she could see. She slid down with Tihamah though, not wanting to be left behind. "So you've really been here before?" She asked curiously.

Her forehead wrinkling, Tihamah let her gaze drift along the tops of the dunes, pondering Dulcie's question. "I can't honestly say. This whole place seems so familiar, and yet I know I've never been here before, not to this place anyway. I came to this land as an adult, and have always longed for this place.....maybe when I was younger I was here or someplace just like it, but I have no memory of being young......isn't that strange?"

Dulcie frowned. Her greatest memories were those of when she was young. She'd loved those days and the namrah she'd met. She loved looking back on who she was. It was sad to think that there were namir out there who'd no idea of those times. "Well you're not the first to no remember that sort of thing." she said, still frowning, "I've other friends who never knew being so little..." She looked out at the sand somewhat blankly, "Maybe you lived here as a kit. Maybe your family came from all of this sand and something happened where you ended up back at the meadow."

"Maybe," Tihamah said wistfully as she scooped up a pawful of sand and pet it slip through her fingers and back into the dune. "But then why don't I remember having parents or any other family? Surely if I ever was a kit, I couldn't have made it to the meadow all by myself." She sighed and turned to smile at Dulcie. "It is definitely a mystery, but maybe we might find something way out here that will jog my memory, if there's any to jog." She chuckled and began a laborous walk up a sloping sand dune, more of a challenge than a chore, but that was because she had yet to climb the scores of other dunes that they had to climb up and down in order to cross the desert.

"Well I have friends who don't remember family. My bestest best friend Tay-Tay didn't remember his family either until he met his brother who'd been looking for him after so many years!" Dulcie said after Tihamah had started up the dune, "I'm sure at one point everyone was small..." She nodded to herself, following up the dune, the sand sliding beneath her, making the trip rather difficult, "And maybe something took you to the meadow. Fate in disguise..." She gave a shifty look, trying to act all mysterious in her childlike ways.
