!postbodystart ..! { It does a little, doesn't it?
Well, I've got one that isn't really an original/cover as much as an original/spoof.
Case #8: No Aphrodisiac/The Newtown Song
Why? The original is beautiful; the filk, hilarious (but probably only if you're from Australia).
The original by The Whitlams
Even though you realise after a few listens that this song is basically all about things that make the singer feel like having sex, it's still a heart-wrenchingly beautiful song. I love everything about it, from the piano to the vocals.
The spoof by Andrew Hansen and Chris Taylor of The Chaser
The majority of the song is actually based on another Whitlams song, Charlie No. 1, but the chorus is from No Aphrodisiac, so I figured it still counted. This one makes me laugh, and Andrew's impression of Tim Freedman (frontman for The Whitlams) is very, very good. However, beautiful though the song still is, it is intended as a parody, not a tear-jerker.
My verdict? The Whitlams version > The Chaser version. A surprising one from me, giving that I'm a huge Chaser fan, but there you go. } #!. !postbodyendThis post was brought to you by [S.E-m] Enterprises, Ltd.

Case #9: This Must be the Place (Naive Melody)Why this song? Because it's a great song, and one of the few songs where the live version of the original sounds better than the studio version. The original by The Talking HeadsThe live version by The Talking HeadsThe talking in the music video takes away from the song, I think. It's still an amazing song overall. I think David Byrne's singing actually sounds better in the live version though. Cover #1: Arcade FireI wish I could've found a better quality recording of the Arcade Fire version of this song. I think the steel drums add a lot to the song, but the singer's voice is lacking no matter how high your audio quality is. The cover would be just as good as if not better than The Talking Heads' version in my opinion, if not for the vocals. Cover #2: Strings AttachedThis cover is a more mellow interpretation of the song. While I like it, I prefer the original version the best. The Verdict: The Talking Heads' version>Strings Attached's version>Arcade Fire's version.

But about No Aphrodisiac - yes, it is a lovely song, isn't it? That whole album is really good (with a couple of exceptions). Next time I see you on MSN, I'll send you a few songs. } #!. !postbodyendThis post was brought to you by [S.E-m] Enterprises, Ltd.

Case #10: 99 Luftballons (99 Red Balloons)Why this song: It was almost as popular in English as it was in German. And it's a damn good song. The original: Original German Version by NenaThis is an amazing song and an amazing video. Even without knowing the lyric translation, the song is intriguing. English Cover by Nena:The music is still the same, but the English singing doesn't really fit the music. The song feels out of place. What worked in the German version just doesn't work here. English Cover by Goldfinger:Goldfinger ports the song to English with a slightly different melody that fits the English lyrics much better. The result: a pretty damn good song that pays homage to the original. However, the punk beat seems a bit at odds with the light-hearted balloons. It kind of loses a bit of meaning from the song. The verdict: Nena German > Goldfinger English > Nena English

I agree - the German version owns both English versions. } #!. !postbodyendThis post was brought to you by [S.E-m] Enterprises, Ltd.

Mooby, I agree with your verdict. The Goldfinger version is great, but there's something slightly irritating about it. I can't really put my finger on it though.(and no, it has nothing to do with anyone we lived with)

ImagineOriginal - John Lennon A cute, classic song predicting a hypothetical utopian communist society. Cover - A Perfect Circle This song completely attacks the naive little Lennon melody by showing how such a society would be a dystopia rather than a utopia. A much deeper, more satirical, and more thought-out version of the song. Conclusion: A Perfect Circle > John Lennon

That's interesting. I interpreted A Perfect Circle's verison very differently than you did. THat porbably has something to do with the fact that I know a bit about the singer, Manyard James Keenan, so it was tough for me to get past the "no religion" partof the song and to see him as mentioning it in a disapproving way.

well, the original idea of the thread was to post links to the covers so that everyone else could see them and judge their own verdict. You could post names though, and not make it an official case. Then we can see if we can try to find links to the songs for you too. I have a whole bunch of songs I can't find links to, outside of that podcast. I have a few covers coming soon. I should have time after this weekend to post some more.

!postbodystart ..! { Well, if you're offering to hunt down songs, does someone want to do Korn's "Thoughtless" vs. Evanescence's cover? I'd do it, but I'm too lazy to find links. } #!. !postbodyendThis post was brought to you by [S.E-m] Enterprises, Ltd.

I never knew there was a cover. The original should be easy enough to find. I'll start searching for the cover. It would be so much easier if I could find a way to host music. I have most of the songs on Mp3.
