Angstrom lord of all Actually, now that I've seen the Death Korps to the Armageddon, I think I might get a platoon of them. but sadly, I dont know how much it costs in the US. sad
The dollar's weak at the moment (house prices haven't helped that) so double the £ price.

What do you guys have to say about Hell Hounds? they seem pretty good for their points cost, but I'm not sure if I should get them. What type of guard army do they compliment?

Hellhounds can fit into most army types really. Good support for the offense, great for countering enemies on the lurk for an assault against your lines as mentioned before, great for city fighting, where washing a building with fire has its uses.

Nuclearwinter What do you guys have to say about Hell Hounds? they seem pretty good for their points cost, but I'm not sure if I should get them. What type of guard army do they compliment? Best is usually 'Nid, Ork, and other guard. S6 and AP4 denies most of the units in the army their save, and also wounds on 2+. Other armies it's still good, but it works best against these.

I find the Hellhound useful for taking out lighter targets with sniper rifles *cough* rangers *cough* and 'Nids. But that's because I have a friend who plays my Alaitoc army every so often and the git with the 'Nids who loves his gaunts. But definitely field one or two against horde armies like the 'Nids or Orks, makes deep-fried fast food out of them.

My turn for questions.
Right, I'm limited to using Stormtroopers from Star Wars for my army, but the only Special wpn they've got is a Plasmagun. For the Heavy wpn, Lascannon or Rocket Launcher. No tanks, all Infantry.
I've got hunches, but I'd like things confirmed before I learn the hard way: Which armies/tactics should I avoid?

Necrons- they always get back to their feet... and those of T5+ cant be insta-killed by IG (save demolisher) Tyranids- they get into your face before you can say "emperor protects", and munch your infantry while blocking LOS for those still not in combat Eldar - pesky skimmer tanks that can re-roll penetration dice, and can land safely even after moving ultra fast... and every dire avenger carries assault 2 weapon designed to clear swathes of guardsmen... Tau - their basic rifle hit kills guardsmen on 2+, nuff said... face it, IG are the underdogs of the WH40k,everybody is more skilled, faster, tougher or has better tech...

If you have no tanks, then stick with laz cannons, you're gonna need them to take down any enemy tanks, if you want a few rocket launchers then put them in your platoon command squads. it makes them usefull but not so dangerous that they'll attact a lot of firepower.
also, any infantry squad with a laz cannon should be packing a plasma gun too, it's worth it to give the squad two AP2 shots if you're not packing any tanks.
also, try to devote a few squads to act as a "speed bump" for assulting armies. just give the squad a heavy bolter or somthing similar, so they can hunker down in cover, but still offer some support.
I'll leave it up to you to decide on how many of each squad you need, but just make sure to take SOMTHING with some mobility. In most cases a tank is your best bet, but sentinals, hardened vets or stormtroopers with infiltrate can be good too.

a deep striking 5 man stormtroopers squad with 2 meltaguns is hit or miss, but if it blows up something heavy like land raider, it will be great, also good for taking out indirect fire vehicles like whirlwind/basilisk, and can fry most independent characters

If you have no tanks, you're going for the pile of guns army.
HQ should only ever cost 81pts (JO w/ Honorific Imperialis, Standard Bearer, Iron Discipline).
For Deepstriking, just take Veterans and Drop Troops. 75pts yields 3 Deepstriking Melta's at BS4. With the three of them, and the command, that's only 306 points. Still have Two choices (Of which, with Stationary Guard, Heavy Weapons is just about a must for one of them, leaving only one left. Cameoline, maybe?).
Same goes for a JO's should stay with their platoons. Use their Ld 8 bubbles.
Always take Lascannons over missiles, always. Higher strength, AP, just as likely to hit, etc. Only reason to ever take missiles is lack of models.
Worse comes to worse, take SOME JO's with Drop Troop and 4 Melta's. Even just two, with the three vet squads, lead to 17 Deep Striking Melta's. If you don't take Cameoline, THESE deepstriking JO Melta guys are the only ones (Besides Lascannon teams) that deserve Sharpshooters. All others, save points.
Infantry Platoons, stock up on 'em. Lascannon / Plasma Gun or Plasma Gun / Autocannon are good combinations. Use them for anti-squad / tank roles. With no upgrades beyond the weapons, a Platoon with both those is only 95pts (While you, in a 2K point game, have 1694pts left after only the HQ and Hardened Vets). Assuming Four Platoons with three each (12), that's still only 1140 points, each Platoon led by a JO with only a Power fist and Discipline, you have 274 points left. Without the P-Fists, 354. Add in the 2 command HB teams (100pts), and two JO-led HB Platoons (180), and then the option for either 4 more Melta's to Deep Strike, or another HB team.
Assuming you choose a HB team, you have the following:
15 Heavy bolters. 9 Deep Striking Meltaguns. 9 Lascannons. 12 Plasma Guns. 3 Autocannons. 100+ Lasguns.
15 shots at 48" or less. Another 45 Shots added at 36" or less. Around 140 addittional shots at 24" or less. Another 140 additional shots at 12" or less.
You also have a 24" Diameter Leadership square with a re-roll, and six Ld 8 bubbles.
