I have yet to see anyone use taekwondo in an rp fight.

Because it isn't useful in a real fight either.

A friend of mine did seven years of Tae, before giving Muay Thai a shot. After only three months of Thai he said: "Taekwondo is pretty flashy, but it's designed for tournaments where after one hit you stop and go back to your own side of the mat. The only thing that I really learned from seven years of it was how to kick."

A good skill to learn, for sure, but not worth seven years when you can learn it in much less time with a useful discipline.
Kicks can hurt.

...I never learned any hand to hand combat. The only one that I probably did learn - which was when I was a kid and a brat back then - was Kung Fu. Didn't learn s**t, and the teacher was biased towards separating those that had skills from the ones trying to actually learn. D:

Then there was that three months of Kendo - which I learned some good basics, and that was about it, unfortunately. With the fact of me wearing glasses - well, that kind of killed the situation of me actually fighting in one.

The rest of the martial arts I learned from all the old Asian drama and movies. Good stuff - especially when you see some Tai-Chi, Judo, and weapon combat in action.

Most of the stuff I use in Rp fights are mainly just basic anatomy knowledge of the human body. And primarily counters or attacks that inflict pain...
Until someone starts wearing armor, or is buffed with muscles and whatnot.

...
Then I just stick with weapons.
Unless they start wearing heavy armor, or are brutes in the process.

That's where I bring in Halberds.

....
.....
Unless they're rushers and close range combata- GODDAMMIT. D:<

You miss my point entirely. What I'm saying is that Taekwondo teaches you how to kick, but that in itself is useless without knowing more (the more is what he learned elsewhere).

It would be like teaching someone that ink comes out of a pen. That's great, but without knowing a written language, or the mechanics of drawing... it's not pointless, but it is rather useless for the person who learned it.

Your gonna hate me.....

@Reach: I got your point but there is a very large difference in american and korean taekwondo. Korean taekwondo you can actually put into practice because it doesnt go for just the flashy "s" that american taekwondo teaches. The only thing is how to imput those high end kicks into practical rp use when kicks are so highly disfavored because everyone thinks they are so easily blockable or deflectable.

The trick in utilizing such maneuvers in roleplaying is to not lead with a "flashy" kick as much as utilize it after doing something else in order to make it more difficult for your opponent to stop.

A comparison would be Instant Kills in Guilty Gear. The more learned in the game you become, the less likely someone'll be able to just walk up to you and IK you (border-lining impossible especially with some Instant Kills like Anji's that're just so predictable.) However, if you learn and can utilize some combos that'll throw your opponent off their regular guard - that usually impractical technique can become possible, and with landing it of course, is a defeated opponent.

Same basic premise - a lot of maneuvers in combat could surprisingly be effective in the right circumstances, if complimented by something more practical to open with that'll wedge the intended assault's way through.

And Vash, I don't know why but I'm already starting to hate you. Why is that? D:

Also -> You won't find anyone here that would take a kick as is, since most of the people here usually have some means of reacting to a split kick motion - or take one, and royally ******** you over in the a** because of it.

I dont know why your starting to hate me. Im usually such a loveable person. mrgreen

@All: Anyway I know no one is simply gonna accept a kick. However, im thinking about using advanced kicking techniques like the guy in the drunken master. If im correct, I believe his style was korean taekwondo.

It was Drunken Boxing.

The style of any drunken master is drunken boxing. And if you're Jackie Chan, then like 60 percent of that s**t is improv.

Please Snow. We would ******** you in the a** with less provocation than that.

Vash: That's as may be, but Tae (Korean or American) has absolutely zero defense against grappling. Against in-fighting in general. Outfighting... yeah, you have a few good kicks that'll work in that distance, sometimes even outside of outfighting. Even some esoteric kicks that nobody would ever expect (because they're never seen) and can pack half of a punch.

But seriously? There isn't enough versatility.

Also: You can type "s**t" on the internet. Your mom probably won't see it.

Oh, perfect, Snow is here. I really would like to reply to your post right now Snow, but unfortunately I need to go lie down and keep myself from dying. I haven't slept in over 24 hours trying to reset my internal clock. ._.

I'll make sure I post tomorrow.

Ack. The Insomniac/Jetlag phenomenon. I completely understand the situation; get some sleep, and we'll get this fight on the road when you're refreshed. x3
