alliop LoreWren alliop LoreWren alliop I am a noob as far a philosopy goes. I have only read two books on the history of philosophy, and have just began reading Neitzche's Thus Spake Zarathustra. I began studying it by reading books for about fifteen minutes before hitting the sack. Now that I hagve more time I plan on hitting it pretty hard. Hey, I just started reading that!Wow, what a coincidence. I have understood most of it but can't seem to understand what the point of that meeting was between Zarathustra and the saint at the beginning. We must talk about this sometime, although I admit I haven't quite gotten that far. I'm still reading the introduction. redface You should know more than me then once you finish reading it becuase you have an introduction. Don't worry, you're better off without it. It's so confusing. I just skipped the last half of it.

My true name is Chris, I was introduced into philosophy about a ndyear ago, yet through my long-held beliefs and my political background I can hold an argument against anyone who believes the contrary. I'd prefer to let my personality unfold in debate, so that's all for now.

Hello. I won't give out my first name but I am a freshman in high school. My interests include language, science, math, art, books, music of all kinds, politics, verious social causes, and whatever I happen to be reading about.
I have played contrabass for a few years, now. I've been an avid reader ever since I first learned. My favorite classes are English, Biology, Orchestra, History, and French.
I joined this guild to learn new things and practice my debate skills.

Hello all. I'll not give out my name, for obvious reasons. I'm 14, taking mostly rigorous courses in high school, and have a knack for having smart friends.
I join this guild in hopes of finding fellowship among the mature. Obviously, someone with an interest of philosophy and religion isn't going to be cracking your mom jokes in the back of the class. In addition, I like to think my philosophy (Weak or Strong as it is. You be the judge.) is in need of being diffused through out some sort of group. (Just a gut feeling.)
You'll find that I have a deep rooted belief in Christianity, primarily baptist with the exception that there church sermons are too long and they don't believe in praying in tongues. I'm very close minded religion wise as a result. I'm also a strong rooted conservative as a result (However, I have seen liberal Christians) and commonly express that view and present logical reasons for my beliefs.
As a warning, if I don't like you I will be satirical at times. In addition I make a lot of generalizations. If you feel you are an exception to any of my generalizations, please tell me and I'll acknowledge it post-haste.
That's about it. Sorry for the life story; I have a tendency for over explaining things.

Hello! I've been studying philosophy officially for 6 years, but have somehow always managed to have vaguely philosophical conversations for as long as I can remember. (Probably because everyone around me always asked Why? so I learnt to as well)
I'm at University now, and I love Nietzsche's style and find him inspiring, although I still can't decide how much of his philosophy I agree with. I've been studying Heidegger, Wittgenstein and Kant this year (among others) and am thinking towards the relationship between art and philosophy.
My other loves are art and magic. And my partner, of course.
Oh, and I've read Thus Spake Zarathustra. Much Fun!

Welcome to the Stoica. I'm reading Thus Spake Zarathustra, but very slowly because of exams. I'm studying Nietzsche, and I mostly agree, except for his views on women. Hope you have fun here.

Quote: I'm studying Nietzsche, and I mostly agree, except for his views on women. Thanks! I'm looking forward to being here.
Err, yeah, his views on women tend not to be very good, I agree.
"When you go to a women, do not forget your whip." ?!
But that does seem to be an odd trend with many well-known philosophers, given that most of the ones we learn about (and so are relatively well-known) were men from periods of history where misogyny seems to have been actively encouraged. Kant, in Critique of Judgement, calls woman soul-less, but pretty. It confuses me how people who are in other ways very intelligent, and who challenged the thoughts of the society they grew up in, could blindly accept, seemingly without thinking, this completely misogynistic view - makes me wonder what views future generations will see we had and will view as completely irrational and self-evidently wrong.
Nietzsche does go a small step further though, doesn't he, seems to have made it quite personal.

Hello!
I'm new here.
I'm just past the intro to philosophy stage. Which means that I probably know JUST enough to show how foolish I am. But I'm here in hopes of finding hip philosophers so I can learn !

Very new here, even to the world of Gaia. I'm interested in philosophy, and wish to broaden my understanding of some concepts.

I'm horrible at intro's as I never know exactly what to say but here goes.. I joined this guild yesterday, and my friends call me Caly. I enjoy learning other peoples viewpoints and philosophies on various subjects, and and still in the process of developing my own. basically I believe in live and let live, and go by the rule of dont do unto others what you wouldnt want done to myself, as I believe that's the safer way to go about it than your classical 'golden rule'. I'm not religious, but I'm pretty spiritual. I believe science and spirituality are both viewing the same things from different angles. I dont believe in a personal god of any kind, but I believe in god as a concept for the sum total of the universe.
anyway, hi smile

Hey, I'm Luke. I'm currently on a sort of scholarship in an Indonesian University. I've always had an inquiring mind, but was only introduced to philosophy in high school. My favorites are Nietzsche and Lao Tzu. I have no formal education in philosophy, and I haven't really read much. I have no personal religion, and have taken the further step in taking the position that religion is nothing more than a convenient social structure, rather than divine will made manifest.
Ah, not to sound ranty or anything, but a note about Nietzsche and his position on women, especially in Thus Spake Zarathustra - you should keep in mind that the book is actually a commentary about the Judaeo-Christian religious works. Zarathustra, or rather Zoroaster, is thought to be the first person to institutionalize a Heaven/Hell afterlife - thus he is, in effect, the father of the three major monotheistic religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In my view, TSZ is more an attack on religion, with Nietzsche's views on what could replace it embedded within the text. Coincidentally, I was quite surprised by the similarities of Nietzsche's Superman and Plato's Ideal Ruler (from The Republic).
