Laenara stood there as candidate after candidate Impressed. She fought back the tears as her walls threatened to crumble. She would disappoint her parents and she would disappoint herself. Feeling thoughts of love from Redd, Lae moved in closer as the gold rider began to crack open eggs.
But she couldn't help but look back at the other candidates, no weyrlings now, interacted with each other. A pit of jealousy and anger formed even as she tried to push it down so.as not to upset the baby dragons. From the first cracked egg came a... BLUE? Laenara laughed at his fooling everyone. What a silly beast! Perhaps, she would work on getting to know his rider as well.

With half an eye for what was going on with those mysterious 'dud' eggs Vee trotted back up to the little gathering around the healers bearing four large pails of meat. "Figured other people might wind up here," she said as she dumped them down and then dropped into a sitting position beside one of them. Baeveth - now patched up - padded over and flopped down in her lap with a soft purring noise. Vee - or V' - found herself lost for words, lost for thoughts really. As she stroked the dragon's head she could feel her own hand against her head - Baeveth's head - and as she passed her a piece of meat she found that she could taste it in her mouth, bloody and still warm. This was- this was- it was nothing like she'd expected but she didn't know what she had expected.
"Anyone else feel...." V' frowned slightly as she looked for the right words. "Unreal?" It was kind of unreal, Baeveth was there in her mind and she knew without question that she was loved and that the green would be there for her no matter what. V' knew she had the pick of the clutch lying in her lap but she also knew that everyone else had to be feeling the same. Every dragon was perfect to their rider, right?

Wherrybrained trickster dragon! She had to give him some (very grudging) credit, as that prank had required not only forethought, but impressive patience and restraint, but his choosing to spend those admirable traits and effort on a joke rendered that credit practically null and void. At the very least, though, he did Impress without fuss, and so she was soon back to the task at hand.
Anali cleared her throat. "Let's try this again, shall we?"
The nearby Hidden Egg became her target, regarded cautiously for a moment before she brought the shovel to bear on its shell. The egg rocked, and tiny cracks formed on its dry-bone surface, but it was apparent that she hadn't hit it quite hard enough. Shards. She struck it again for good measure, and the cracks became larger and deeper. It wobbled precariously, and finally a dark nose punched a hole through the weakened shell. Nostrils flared as the hatchling took deep breaths. Was it gasping for air, or inhaling scents?
The black snout disappeared, and a yellow-green eye peered out the opening.

Jaric and Imbeleth
Jaric was busy cutting up meat and handing it to his dragon as fast as he could, but the dragon had attention to spare to watch the sands. He saw the last of the hatched dragons Impress, then Anali approaching the unhatched eggs and...
Oh, look! he told Jaric when the blue burst out of his shell. He was pretending to not be there the whole time, then surprised everyone! Oh, I like him. He'll be fun, we ought to spend time with him!
Jaric had missed the whole thing, but Imbeleth gladly shared a mental image of the scene. The boy hadn't been expecting the sudden image in his head, but he had to chuckle. "Yeah, that was good. Wait, she's cracking open the eggs now? Maybe there'll be more atypicals." He craned his neck to see hoping to catch one of them being hatched.
Sure enough Anali whacked one of the remaining eggs with a shovel. And again, when the first time wasn't hard enough. Jaric caught a glimpse of a black snout as it poked through, but the hatchling didn't seem ready to leave the egg yet.

Was she suppose to do that? Lesex guess so, since no one was making a fuss about it. Still, it seemed a bit traumatic, being brought into the world with the blunt end of a shovel.

The blue's entrance definitely deserved a chuckle, and Lucayr obliged. He watched the next assisted hatching with interest, tilting his head to one side to get a better look at the hole that appeared in the white shell. It was dark... another brown, perhaps? He rather hoped so.

Though the occupant of the egg had gone mostly still, staring hard at the people surrounding him, watching him, the damage was already done. Cracks continued to spread, and pieces of shell fell away with every heaving breath he took. There was no helping it now, he could hide in the dark comfort of his egg no longer! With a shuddering of his wings, the black revealed himself at last. He was none too happy about having to do so, however, and his gaze darted back and forth, searching for a suitable replacement for his lost hiding spot, but there was nothing. Sand littered with broken shells, all open space save for the grouping of candidates and the gold who oversaw it all. He creeled unhappily, tail lashing, and staggered forward. This would not do! He wanted off these Sands! And creeping up on him, close behind the need for an out, was a gnawing hunger. And cold. It felt so very cold outside his egg, despite the radiant warmth of the sands. Shivering and desperate, he searched with eyes and mind for a savior, and found one. <>

When the first hatchling had come by the, nosing through the girls, she'd been a little intimidated. Especially with all the fighting and growls and general chaos that had been going on from the start, pretty much. However by the time there had been a few more hatchlings nosing among them, Avalinia had quieted her inner feelings and found them fascinating to be close to. Though she didn't dare reach out and touch any of them. Even when she was bumped by one at some point.
There had also been a strange sense of relief that flickered briefly through her when the lovely gold impressed someone. If it had been her... Avalinia decided not to think on that.
Once again there were hatchlings come towards them. A bronze and a brown... and a blue! All the boys. Her lips curled up a tiny bit from where she wasn't quite hiding behind another girl. They were so lovely...
Avaliniamine! Your Druith is so happy to find you! Now we can meet everyone!
She blinked huge eyes, a small gasp escaping. H-Had she really heard that? Her gaze was drawn to the gorgeous blue hatchling that had made his way to sit in front of her.
Why are you so surprised? You're the only one I thought was perfect! He trilled sweetly to her.
Avalinia felt frozen as her heart beat almost out of her chest. "You're... beautiful!" She said softly, a grin springing forth as she reached a hesitant hand out to touch him. Druith didn't need any more invitation then that! The blue moved forward and leaned into her with a soft sigh, a light croon rising from his throat.
Thank you, mine! Do you think we could go get some food? Druith asked with a sense of smiling.
"O-Of course!" Avalinia managed to get out, eyes flickering to the others around her briefly before she focused solely on Druith. He nuzzled her once more before leading the way towards the feeding tables. Each of his siblings he passed by, Druith offered a cheerful chirp in greeting while Avalinia gave nervous little looks to those around them.
Don't worry, mine. I'm right here with you. And my siblings and theirs won't harm you. He paused, perking up as they neared his bronze sibling. Imbeleth! Did you see what Leszyth did? Druith snickered, deciding to park himself next to his bronze brother.
Avalinia managed to snatch some food for her new bondmate, and almost dropped some of it when she realized she would be right next to someone she didn't know!

Jaric and Imbeleth
Imbeleth chirped a greeting as Druith came to sit next to him. Yeah, what a great trick! I wish I'd thought of that one, he replied to the blue. He gulped down some meat then added, Then again, they probably wouldn't have believed my egg was a dud. Mine thinks it was very big.
Jaric was a bit distracted, trying to feed Imbeleth while watching the hatching at the same time. He saw the egg crack to reveal the black hatchling inside before he noticed that he and Imbeleth had a neighbor at the tables. A blue dragon and someone he didn't know from the creche. He didn't interact with her much in Candidate lessons either, so he didn't know her too well. But he probably shouldn't ignore her, even though he didn't know what to say. "Um, hi?" he managed to say to Avalina. Then he busied himself cutting up more meat.

And a black to a boy she knew as a Harper. Laenara sighed. The knot eased.from her chest as another Impression was made. How could she stay hurt when there was supposed to be happiness? Wrinkling her nose, she turned away from the eggs again. Too much emotion for her. She might go to the feast later if only to finally eat decent food. And from there, she would make her plans.

Right. That had worked. One egg cracked, one to go. More importantly, she now had a better idea of the force needed to break the atypicals' shells. Feeling more confident, Anali moved to the Dancing Egg, colorful pieces discarded shell breaking beneath her feet. She took a deep breath to steady herself, readied her shovel one more time, and swung.
Thwack.
This time, the first time was the charm, and as deep cracks spiderwebbed across the surface of the mottled egg, the dragon it housed flared its wings, sending bright fragments of shell flying in all directions to rain down upon the sands (and anyone within the vicinity). A bright, beautiful crimson stood tall and lifted her head to give a clarion call. She had been waiting for this moment, and though some assistance had been required, now that it had arrived she embraced it with style. The shovel suffered a look of disdain, but the woman wielding it received a grateful croon. Though her showy entrance had doubtless consumed valuable energy, the crimson gave no indication that she was anything other than perfectly fine. Anything other than absolutely perfect.

A crimson! She had a special spot for the red dragons since rescuing Redd. Laenara moved in closer to see every perfect detail of the small Dragon. What a little lady. With a nudge and push, Lae could only think of how she would love to be this dragon's rider.
But if thoughts were dragons, then everyone would ride. And not everyone was capable of being a rider. She wondered if people tried to get pieces of their dragon's shell. She would try if she could... She had a piece of Redd's shell. Anxiously, Laenara watched and waited.

Lesex grinned, looking over the bright red wings. Strange, and odd, but still, he liked red. It was a bright and magnificent color and the gal? was a looker.

As the shell fell away from the Hidden egg, it became obvious that the dragonet within was black. A second black! Again, Lucayr found himself mulling over the benefits and drawbacks of an atypical dragon. The creature was rather pathetic, the way it complained like a lost wherry chick and wobbled on spindly little legs, especially after the remarkable strength and speed of its clutchmates so soon out of their shells. And was it shivering? It would be a taxing weyrlinghood for whoever Impressed that one, and with no guarantee of the dragonet's survival. The harper felt an unanticipated pang of sympathy for it... and that was when its rainbow eyes met his.
Lucayr, will you come over here? Your Tikth is very hungry, I can't do anything while I'm so hungry!
To say the harper was startled would have been putting it lightly. He was certainly speechless. He felt the sickening sensation of guilt starting to ooze into him for being so dismissive of the tiny black dragonet. He was almost afraid to approach it.
Tikth creeled again, swinging his head in a clear display of his distress. And there are so many here! Too many! he added, a note of hysteria coloring his voice.

Jaric and Imbeleth
And Jaric was too busy being bashful to watch the last egg get smacked with a shovel, but once again Imbeleth was watching out for him. Oh look, she broke open the last egg! the dragon prompted. So Jaric looked up in time to see the egg bits fly everywhere as the hatchling flared her wings.
"Oh, a crimson!" Jaric noted, partly to Imbeleth and maybe also to Avalina. He didn't know much about the atypicals, having grown up in traditional Benden, but he knew those had a unique choice. "I wonder who they'll go to. And whether she and her rider will pick being a fighter or a breeder." He was glad he didn't have to make that kind of a choice, it would be weird to consider. He was happy with his Imbeleth. Imbeleth was perfect. At the thought, he reached out to stroke his dragons's head, and the bronze thrummed in response.
