"Yeah, it always is," Toby replied, and he tried to release the hug but Maia wasn't having it. "It's like I can really feel it. Better to wake me up with a sharp whack to the head than a hug, though. Still sorry about that." He wasn't sure exactly how much action had been in his dream versus in reality but he remembered real flesh against real hand.

Memory nightmares. The selkie knew what those were like, but Toby's definitely seemed worse. He'd been attacked himself, after all. "Because you did feel it," She said. "If you can't sleep after your shower, you can come talk to me."
"It's okay," Maia assured him. "You were scared, you probably thought I was going to hurt you."

"It's just reflex. Be glad I didn't whip out any federal jiu-jitsu." While field agents did get special combat training, Toby didn't know a lick of jiu-jitsu. He smiled softly. "Alright, sure. Go back to bed. Sorry I woke you."
Dari watched from the hall. Huh. It was interesting to have someone else to help comfort Toby.

Maia wasn't sure what jiu-jitsu was, but she figured she was glad. She was sore enough. "It's alright. I was going to get up for something to read anyway," she lied. She did make her way down the stairs and towards the bookshelves, though.
She didn't think she'd be able to sleep.

Sure she was. Toby sighed. He'd punched the poor girl in the face and she was making excuses to help him. He wandered to the bathroom and took a long, hot shower and emerged quite some time later in his boxers again, dried off but still rather warm. Dari was back downstairs and looked to him.
"Are you alright?" the alien asked.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. Is Maia too hurt?"
"Maybe a little bruised tomorrow."
"Ach..."

Maia had left her room for Toby's and was laid on the blankets reading. She hadn't been sure he'd take her up on her offer, but maybe he needed the company. She was reading one of the books she'd purchased; a story about thirteen short people and an even shorter person going to regain their treasure from a dragon.
She thought Lori would be offended by the else's behavior.

Toby was surprised to see Maia in his room, but he only paused for a moment. He'd let her stay in his room when she was scared. She probably figured that since he had been scared, it went the same way.
"Hey," he said. He was long since over being embarrassed by Maia seeing him in short only. It'd happened quite a few times now.

Maia set her book down, looking to Toby. "Are you feeling better?" she asked. She patted the bed. "Come read with me. This wizard is making these dwarves go on a quest and they've met up with elves. They keep teasing the dwarves about their beards." She offered the book to Toby.

"Ah, yeah, I've read that one," Toby said with a nod. Ah, Lori got so much s**t for the Lord of the Rings series. You said "elf" and people had one set image in mind. "They'd probably have made fun of Lori too, but he'd have decked them." He had taken the book to look at the cover but offered it back.

"Lori's too nice to deck anyone," Maia protested. "I like Lori's kind better anyway." He didn't seem likely to burst into song at any moment. That'd certainly make classes awkward! She took the book back, opened it and began to read aloud.to read aloud.

Ah, well. Lori had a temper, but really he was just a great big teddy bear. While Maia took the book back and resumed reading he slipped into bed beside her and propped his head up on a pillow first, then on is elbow to face her and listen. He was exhausted, but he was afraid to go back to sleep.

Maia paused in her reading to study Toby. You can sleep," she said. She'd keep watch tonight, make sure he didn't have another nightmare. She went back to reading.

Well he could, sure. That wasn't the problem. It was what might return when he did that worried him. In time, though he shifted to lay down and his breathing became more slow and even. It wasn't all too long after that that Toby was asleep, and the nightmare didn't return.

Maia stayed up for a long while, not moving, but making sure Toby was having a restful sleep. She finished the book, letting it drop between them and curling beside him.
When morning came, her usual vibrance was diminished. She rubbed at her eyes, grumbling about having classes, and headed for the bathroom.

For once Toby was more awake! He was still sleepy, but not nearly as grumpy as Maia was. He decided then to make her a special breakfast and whip out the waffle maker and the whipped cream and slice up some strawberries. He and Dari talked about the night before, although conversation stopped when Maia was within hearing distance.
