Special characters can only be taken with the permission of your opponent. Read the Independant Character section of the new rulebook, and towards the end it talks about special characters.

No that section only states that, "In some cases with particularly legendary and celebrated characters, they may only be used in battle where both players have agreed to their use before hand." pg. 52 Special Characters

This means that with some of the uber special characters it's up to everyone to use their own discression on those characters.

Everyother time as long as you fulfill the requirements you do not have to ask permission.

Though that also means if the other person thinks it's unfair to use that character, you might have a problem.

Anybody remember when old one eyed came out for Tyranids. It was such an overrated character for nids who normally don't have characters.

I remembered a few people tried fielding it so I just reduced my squad sizes to 5 for my black templars so that I can get more heavys out and just missiled that regenerating carnifex into oblivion.

In short, I think that in general special characters are overrated. your better off using the extra points pumping up the rest of your army.

the exception I think are assassins, because of their unique abilities and characters that really bring something in to help the army as a whole instead of being an over glorified version of a normal hq. (Ex: Chaplain and Emp. Champion assaulting an enemy HQ squad. Chaplain wipes out the squad while the HQ boss's extra attacks are wasted on the Champion with his challenge ability which almost guarantees that even if you don't outright win the first round of combat the squad will be stuck in the assault for one more round. so that your troops can do their jobs without worrying about some big guy clubbing them to death.)

Exactly what I meant by use your own discression. If you want to use your special character, but the opponent thinks it's unfair have a second army list handy so that you wont have to go through the trouble of writing a whole nother one up right at the game table.

I have no fear of "Old One Eye" or "The Red Terror", I have taken both out on numerous occasions in hand to hand combat using standard Tac. Marines. I would gladly let opponent field them, just to see his face when my Vet. Sergeant rips their hearts out with Powerfists, and Master Crafted Lightning Claws.

Veteran Sergeant. You could give him one power fist and one master crafted lightning claw. It's a decent combo that lets you choose wether to take on troops or tanks, and you only sacrifice one gun.

Lol! Close, I have 2 Squads with Powerfist Equipped Sergeants, and 2 Squads with MCLC Sergeants.

Got a Space Wolves question.

In the SW Codex it states that Frost Blades/Axes have motorized teeth. So it's safe too assume that Frost Blades/Axes are specialised Chainswords/Axes. Especially since Ragnar Blackmane is equipped with a Frost Blade, and on his model he is carrying a massive double bladed chainsword.

What I would like to know is this. I would like to make a scratch built Force Commander, and I want to equip him with a Frost Axe, but I do not want to use a Chain Axe bit. I would like to use a Power Axe, and paint up the blade to look like it's made out of ice, hence "Frost Axe". Would this be allowed? Or no?

I know among friends it would be ok, I was just wondering if I took my SW to a tournament.

As long as it was super obvious to your opponet & you informed them & any others that it would be wise to tell. Just add in that the Chain axe looks awfully close to chaos & leave it at that

so long as you tell your opponent beforehand and have no similar looking axes in your army, this complies with WYSIWYG standard and as such is 100% legal.

Exactly why I would prefer to not use the chain axe bitz. Especially since the only loyalist SM Chapter I can think of that uses chainaxes are the Flesh Tearers, and 13th Company Space Wolves.
