Toby's explanation of microwaves amused Maia more than it informed, and she grinned at him. Yes, he certainly did seem to be feeling better, far better than the days before. Yesterday had been a good one. She was glad today seemed to be going that way, too. "I still don't know how it works," she said. Particles and wavelengths were beyond her, she'd have to ask Lori about them.
"Pancakes have feelings too!" she cut in, grinning at the two men.

For the first time ever, Maia had joined in. Toby laughed and gestured to the griddle. "No they don't! If they do, we are terrible people. Or do they only have emotional feelings? PANCAKE. PANCAKE, YOU'RE A SISSY."
Dari was just laughing and shaking his head.
"I don't think he felt it, usually that makes kids cry," Toby said/ he calmly slipped the spatula under, checked the color, and put it on a plate. "Pop the oven on 'keep warm' and put these on a plate?" Dari had no idea how to use the oven, really.

Maia smirked. "Well, it can't speak English, so it has no idea you've insulted it." She shook her head at him.
She looked over the oven and found the switch Toby had mentioned. She turned it on, looked to Toby and waited for him to put the other pancakes onto the plate.

"Ah. Do you speak pancake?" Toby asked. He put the pancakes on the plate and put it in the oven. On to the second set.
"Plans for today?" Dari asked.
Toby shrugged. "The usual." Oh? There was a usual?

"No," Maia shook her head solemnly, before her serious expression broke and a grin took it's place. She looked to Dari as he spoke, and then Toby. Huh. What did that mean? The usual for their days off? The usual for this time of year? Huh.
"Want to go shopping later?" she suggested.

"Well I have to go pick up a few things, if you want to come," Toby replied, voice still bright as he continued to make pancakes. "I've got some things l like to do this day every year."
Dari had been present only once and wasn't sure how much of what had been done had been annual. He had been invited along, though. That had been the strangest part. Dari had assumed Toby liked to be alone on this day, save maybe the fire at the end of the night.

"Alright," Maia agreed. She'd be able to pick up a bag of marshmallows for Dari. Maybe one for herself as well--she wondered if lunch and dinner had already been planned. "Dari, is there anything you want from the store?"

Dari just smiled. "Oh, I'll come." They weren't headed anywhere dark or dim so the projector was a reasonable alternative to painting himself up. He didn't really need anything, but it felt special to be involved in the day's activities. It felt important.
"What are we feeling for dinner?" he asked. "I thought I might bring you guys to lunch while we're out."

Dari was coming? That made today that much better, automatically. She gave him a hug. "Good," She said. She released him and smiled. It was always more fun when Dari came along with.
She looked to Toby when the question was asked about dinner. "What would you like?" She asked.

Dari reflexively hugged the woman back and smiled again.
"No, no. That's not what I asked. What do you feel like? We could even go out again if you want." More pancakes onto the plate in the oven and back to the griddle.

"Spaghetti?" Maia suggested. They had yet to make it, and cooking something together would be fun. "No, we can stay in for dinner." She smiled at Toby. "How many pancakes are you making?" She asked, curiously. The griddle was still on.
"I'm buying you some marshmallows," she informed Dari.

"Three each, right? That's pretty standard." Which would make this the last batch. "Marshmallow are actually something we need to grab anyone. I'd like to have a fire tonight if everyone's game." If they weren't he'd have his own and they could go do whatever they liked.
"Spaghetti sounds good. I think I still have some home-made sauce in the freezer, actually."

A fire? They had planned one a few days ago and Toby hadn't seemed that interested. "A fire would be nice," she agreed. "Dari, we can roast marshmallows!"
Oh, good. "I bet it's great, you can show me how to make it sometime."

"Have you ever had s'mores before?" Toby asked. People had fires at the beach all the time, and either Maia hadn't kept her private beach private or she had wandered along it among the general population like where they had first found her. He flipped the last bath of pancakes.
"Sure. It's not hard, it just takes time. Plus I'm not Italian so who knows how authentic it is."

S'mores? Maia recognized the term, but no. She shook her head. "Are we going to make some?" she asked. They were the crackers with chocolate and marshmallow, weren't they?
The selkie didn't seem to care whether the sauce was authentic or not. "That doesn't matter. It'll still be good."
