Movies generally ruin books. ._.; From what I've seen, anyways.

You'd think that, but there are a few nice exceptions. =3
Also, I don't think Tolkien paved the way for sci-fi. Maybe some parts of fantasy, but not necessarily all of them. I can think of a few fantasy books that didn't seem Tolkien-influenced at all, and basically all of sci-fi. You don't see prissy elves in sci-fi. Dx
Also, I don't play D&D. I'd like to, but what I've heard of fans it's a bit overrated. I definitely want to try Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines, though.

People these days can't play D&D RIGHT. I blame society. mad
D&D 30 years ago was a seperation from the world. It was like a spectacular RP or something. When playing, it flowed, and lived. DM's were no longer DM's; players were no longer players. You would stay up for two nights straight playing non-stop...
WHY THE HELL DID I HAVE TO BE BORN IN THE 90'S?!?!

D&D is far from overrated. People just can't play it right anymore.
