Well, that goes without saying. Same for my platoon commanders.

yeah missile launchers are much more versatile biggrin as for plasma guns/grenade launchers i think it depends on what you want your infantry to do. nade launchers will do the job for most teams for single targets and blast radius couldn't hurt even if it is small plus nade launcher is cheaper and won't kill your guy

Grenade launchers and cheap for what they are. They're incredibly annoying, effectively having a 30" range. Even if you're Marines. gonk

Grenade Launchers stay then. Though, I really do plan on getting my Command Squad loaded with Plasma. That, and maybe my smaller Platoon Command sections... It's been forever since I've looked at a Codex, and I can't recall everything properly. I used to bum my bud's for when we did little battles with his IG and Marines, and I really must get one for myself.

Anyways, really shooty IG is what I'm aiming for. Strong, multiple lines of Guardsmen with at least three or so inches between the lines. Probaly closer to seven, depending on the field. Back that up with Leman Russes and Chimeras for a fluid portion of my army for outflanking or counterattacking my foe, and some Sentinels waddling behind my IG.

Ah, there's problem two. I'm going to have Heavy Weapons in my Squads, so as long as I move, I'm losing a small amount of firepower. I like the Sentinel models, and I'm torn on how I should use them. Shall I:

A - Give my Imperial Walkers various nasty bits of firepower, like Multi-Lasers and Autocannons. This way, I can frag on the go.

B - Slap a Flamer onto the thing and be done with it. This way, I have a nice counter-charge unit, and I can keep my precious little Guardsmen away from the naughty Marines for a turn or so more.

I'd suggest you don't do too much moving and keep your infantry stationary to keep heavy weapons at full effect. Either that or dump the heavy weapons to save points and yes spend them on Sentinels. Or you could alway try a heavy weapon platoon and/or slap a buch of heavy weapon squads into your HQ command platoon. Flamers? My experience with Space Marines is that for the most part flamers aren't too effective. I mean they would be except you have a hard time using them because of their short range. Going back to the begining I would suggest you keep heavy weapons in squads and sentinels. If you want lots of heavy weapons you won't want your squads moving. Lasguns suck. remember that wink

Lasguns dont suck, as you get them in huge squads

Can i use Kroot in my Guard army? If yes, are they along the lines of Chapter Approved, and I'd need my opponant's consent?

Yea most likely you could use the abhumans doctrines to represents subs with the warrior weapons doctrines or something like that…

The Imperial Gaurd can recruit Kroot, and just buy it from the Kroot list. It's not a bad idea, seeing how the Kroot give the poor IG a nice, and relatively cheap, option against Close Combat folks.

I don't think they're of the Chapter Approved variety of things, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Bit expensive for being able to drop a squad with a couple' heavy bolters though.

I need a bit of help with a 500 point list. I know guard usually rely on massive support fire. But in 500 points I am having a hard time building this. So I need a bit of advice on what to take and what not to take. Should I go mobile and use chimeras? Or stay foot sloggerish? Are sentinals better then trying to fit in a chimera? How do I keep my troops from costing to much in points?

Thanks to all who reply,
Lozt

I had a Leman Russ, HQ and 2 Troop Choices for about 500 one time I think.
Should be good, as most people won't have anti-tank in a 500 point list.
