Simple: if the scouts can shoot then the tau can fire back.

There's still the matter of cover save, though. :-/

For me and my friends, the unit firing either has to see the body, like how it was in 4th edition. For this, I'd say either use the "have to see the body" rule, or give them a cover save +1 (therefore a 3+) for such a small target to hit compared to what they'd normally shoot at. Generally, though, use the see the body rule, it makes for a faster game and easier way to play, and it has an advantage for both sides anyways, so there's no breaking the game doing it.
And if the scouts are the ones against the wall itself, the Tau will not get a cover save unless they themselves are behind cover as well. Just clearing that point up a bit.

mmm, k. i like the "body" rule i think i remember reading somewhere now that guns and banners dont count as targetable n such... i guess limbs would kindof be similar. as for the plus one, thats a good idea too
aaaand, lastly.. they were both well out of cover, (or, deliberately hiding behind the wall) scouts (targets) were a good 8 inches away from the wall, and the fire warriors (ones targetting) were likewise. so, i think it was just a line of sight created cover save issue gone wrong. if the scouts were deliberately hiding behind said wall, i woulve just said, okay, cant be targetted, theyre ducked behind it, cant be seen, etc. but they were just running on their way to shoot something. *shrugs* anyway, thanks for the help guys. and Necro, i think im going to use the "body" rule from now on.

Okay, yeah, 8 inches is simply just a line of site issue. They can't see each other, but they're probably moving to try and kill each other anyways. biggrin
And the body rule works out extremely well. But for some cases, it's just plain fun to say they don't get cover. In one case where I found this acceptable was when one of my units was targeted through a window by a sniper. It made sense for a sniper to go for such targets, so I let him do it. He missed anyways biggrin

And I don't get this whole cover thing you're talking about... it confuses me... Someone summarize so that people like me understands it? D:

@cover questions: Stop being so bloody vague and just sit down, read the rules proper!
If you see the model you can shoot at it. Be it a head, torso or feet. If you can see it, you can shoot it. As for the type of cover, the main rulebook has a list of what counts as cover and what kind of save it gives.

Even though the rulebook is available for under 10 US dollahz on ebay... >_o;;;
I see tons of those books being thrown away because people buy several black reach boxes to get more minis (I'm one of them, though I've been smart enough to sell those books to our young ones at our gaming club for either bitz or a small amount of cash).

Eh, sometimes the shipping costs will kill the "bargain" price you first see on eBay. Granted, I use it sometimes now for extra models, I stray far away from the large shipping costs. Some people just aren't as smart.
As for my own account on the rules, my group just finds it to be more fair to only count the actual torso, arms, and legs (if you can see the legs, why the hell can't you see the main body?), but again, only if the torso is at least somewhat visible too. Seeing just the head is kind of odd, since they're static and can't duck down how they would in real, live combat. That's why we also sometimes use the +1 to cover saves rule.
Maybe we just like to make the staff think we're playing fifth edition when we're really using fourth. o3o

Necro Fusion if you can see the legs, why the hell can't you see the main body? Model behind a skimmer, model behind a wall with a low hole in it, model with a wide base and spider legs... there's plenty of ways.

Some people just aren't as smart. Last time I checked most stuff within the US are shipped free within the country, and as far as I know the majority of the guild do live in the US. Also the shipping costs for a small book isn't that much more expensive than sending a slightly heavy letter.
