"Sure," Toby agreed with a little nod. "You know, you can make marshmallow fondant or marshmallow buttercream too. It's pretty good. Better than sugar-paste at least. Do you like the basic sugary cake icing? You probably haven't eaten many premade cakes... ouh."
Toby turned from their trek into the kitchen and went back to grab the photo and stick it back into its proper pocket. Then he jogged right back and continued preparing for brunch-making. "Anyway, I hate the stuff, but I'm not fae."

And now he was talking about baking, even better. "I don't like the packaged chocolate cupcakes," Maia confided. "The frosting's all hard and unpleasant." She made a face. She much preferred Toby's homemade frosting to that. "Ooh, we could do that sometime, when you feel up to baking. We could make cupcakes for the other agents, even, if you like. And you and Dari would get some too, of course." Because they were agents, and they lived with her.
"Hey, being fae doesn't mean we like the bad stuff," Maia protested, playfully. "I bet if fae were treated to your cooking, they'd never go back to that stuff. It's horrid."

"It's sugary, though. I guess you're allowed to be picky on the kind of sugar." Toby nodded and grabbed a bowl to crack eggs. "I'm proud of you and your palate."
He half-smiled and turned halfway to her. "And thank you. I try."

"No, it's gross," Maia corrected. "Like soft drinks. They're full of awful things, and sugar. But having sugar doesn't make those awful things taste any better." She turned her attention to cooking, getting a small bowl and grater out to prepare the cheese for the omelet.
"Do you think hot chocolate would be good tonight, too?"

"Sure, we can do hot chocolate. I think we have what we need?" He eyed the closed cabinets as if they could somehow tell him. How could they not have it? He had made hot chocolate in the past, but rarely in the Arizona heat.

"Great," Maia gave Toby a smile. "I think that'll go good with marshmallows" She offered the werewolf the bowl of cheese, once she'd finished grating, and set the rest of the cheese block back into the fridge. "Are you ready for milk?"

Toby nodded. Sure, it'd be good with marshmallows if there were any left by the time they made it. He wasn't sure what sort of pleasure Dari got out of marshmallows, but all the more power to him.
"Yup. Hit me." A pause. "A dash of orange juice in your omelette makes it... ..." Uh. "... better."

Maia handed him the milk jug, blinking at his next statement. Orange juice? She turned to look at him for a moment, scratching her head. "Doesn't orange juice make milk taste sour?" she asked. She handed him an orange, though.

"You don't put in much, just a little splash--" An orange in his hand. He chuckled. It was an actual laugh, an honest one. Off in the living room, Dari smiled.
"No, no. Like out of the carton. Or the jug or... whatever." He hadn't made orange juice in a while. Maybe they should. It might be fun for Maia.

Maia took back the orange and studied the fridge's contents before pulling out a carton of orange juice. She offered it to Toby. She still wasn't sure, mixing milk and orange juice sounded like a bad idea, but Toby knew more about omelets than she did. "What else do you need for it?" she asked.

Toby gave the orange back and waited for the orange juice to add a splash, mixed, and only then added the milk. "I've got it over here." He was nearest the seasonings cabinet.
Dari appeared then with three marshmallows blatantly hovering in his chest in the process of dissolving.
"Did you swallow them?" Toby asked.
Dari pressed another into his chest, watching as his membrane encompassed it. "No." He was smiling, and he gave a little glance to Maia.

Well, they'd certainly found something Dari enjoyed, even if he hadn't swallowed them. Good! Now she knew what the alien would eat. Maia gave Dari a smile. "We're making omelets," she told him. "And later, Toby says we can watch the stars and have hot chocolate."

"Oh, am I invited?" Dari asked. He was pleased that Maia didn't seem unhappy with his eating procedure. He'd made a woman gag once. It hadn't been intentional.
"No," Toby responded, "Also, you have to eat an omelet and drink at least five mugs of hot chocolate."
"Oh?"
"Alone. In the hallway."
Dear god, he was making jokes!

"We could make him an omelet," Maia said, before realizing Toby was teasing Dari. That was nice, refreshing even. She tended to get after Toby for being mean to Dari; but that was how their relationship worked. They loved each other, she knew, and teased each other.
She gave Dari a smile. Something had made Toby feel better.

"Oh, we're on a points-system now?" Dari leaned against the counter.
"Yes."
"Ah."
"I need to use the stove."
"Sorry." Dari stood and got out of the way, still holding his bag of marshmallows.
