"Ah, I was not aware that I was in the presence of nobility." He knelt down and kissed her hand. "Yes, I am certain that I know quite a bit about you. Now, I think I shall clarify a particularly bothersome quandary." He sat down and sipped his coffee. "I'm certain you've met my incarnation who resides without my memories. I would assume that you know him as Grey, so I will instead go by Gregory." Gregory smiled, and wiped his mouth with a napkin.

"I doubt my memories will affect those of Grey, while his will most likely become my own. I won't allow my memories to corrupt his as from what I've started to tell, he has a certain youthful flair. I would hate to take this away, so I'll let him live in ignorance for a while, until he's more prepared for the burden of memories that I carry."

"So, any particular reason that these vampires would want revenge?"

"The title is not mine by birth, I have no real right to it." she replied to his first statement.

Violet flickered around her fingertips as she leisurely pushed into the tiny part of the vampires consciousness that remained.

"No particular reason." she lied. They wanted to break up a powerful union and knew full well that one member of that duo was nigh-unkillable. So they went after her instead.

"If not by birth, then by marriage?" Gregory cocked an eyebrow. "Is he an elf as well?" He smiled innocently.

"Human." She smiled broadly despite the very nasty and invasive magics she was currently maintaining.

"A peasant girl all my life and I trip over a noble."

"Ah, it seemed like fate was your friend on that day." He sipped his coffee. "Is he still among the living?"

"Yes."

A thousand years spent as a trapped ghost, but he lived now.

The light of her magic grew ever so slightly brighter as she withdrew her spell from the vampire.

Gold glittered on her left hand.

This really caught his attention. "I would assume he is magic, then? Certainly human beings do not live as long as elven maidens, if I am correct."

"A sorcerer, yes."

And a century and a half older than Emma, strangely enough.

"I haven't been called a maiden since 1300."

He smiled. "What can I say? Ones as old as myself have a difficult time conforming mentally as the world continues to develop." He sipped his coffee. "What is your husband's name? Perhaps I know of him."

"Hrothbert of Bainbridge?"

She prayed that he hadn't...or at least, hadn't heard the same stories she had when she was a girl.

"I can understand having difficulty changing with the times. I was just getting the hang of the telegram and then they go and invent something else."

He thought for a few moments. "Doesn't ring a bell," he said apologetically.

Thank the gods.

"No matter, no matter." she said quietly, nudging the body again. It turned into a fine powder in a matter of moments, which the elf carefully swept into a vial recently produced from her skirts.

"Excuse me for a moment." His eyes rolled back in the sockets, and then he shook his head rapidly. Grey was back. "WHOA. I don't know about you, but I just had the craziest experience." He looked at himself in a reflection and he had to do a double take. "Has my hair always been this color?"

Emma fought the urge to bang her head against a wall and shook her head.

"I see you've decided to return."

Whoever the bloody hell he was, she wasn't sure anymore.

Grey was confused. "Did I leave? All I know is that I was back inside my mind, attempting to regain my memories." He looked in his coffee mug and saw that it was empty. "I could have sworn this thing was full last time I checked."
