Several thoughts on this episode:
When Rimmer approached Lister, Chen, Selby and Peterson in the disco to ask Lister about his timetable, he gives them the Rimmer salute.
Did anyone at that table outrank him? I can't imagine Rimmer saluting anyone he didn't have to.
The salute is a lead-in to the learning drugs scene, which is hilarious!
Another good bit:
Rimmer: Is that your painting? It's rubbish/
Lister: It's a mirror.
When Lister said he was going to take the exam, I assumed it was the astronavigation exam. It never occurred to me that there was any other exam he could or would take. They even gave us a clue: "Everyone on the ship outranks us." I didn;t get it at the time. Did anyone else realize that Lister could take any exam he wanted?

You know that everyone at the table outranked him except for Lister, because in The End, Todhunter told Rimmer "There are 169 people on this ship. You, Rimmer, are over one man."
It must be very demoralizing for Rimmer to be outranked by the likes of them.

I always assumed that Chen, Peterson and Selby were the same rank as Lister.

evabh I always assumed that Chen, Peterson and Selby were the same rank as Lister. Same here. But, they did not say what rank they had. As we all know Lister is not smart and does not know every thing yet. There is one explination on why everyone outranked those two. There is the unoffical rule that those that have served longer on that ship longer have a higher rank even though they are of the same rank.

Also, I have to say, I love Lister, but how do you fail a cooking exam? And why didn''t Rimmer get a clue? He could have become an officer of everything except astronaigation. It's not like they don't have time... biggrin
It's almost too bad Lister didn't pass the exam. He was right that Rimmer would have saluted Lister, and taken orders from him. I would think that, if that happened, Rimmer either would have had to take the officer's exam and pass it, or learn not to be such a putz when it came to following rules that made no sense. Either way, it would have been a good thing for Rimmer.
(Poor Rimsy, foiled again! biggrin )

Lister failed the exam because Rimmer distracted him. If it wasn't for that, he may have made something edible.

It may, but I don't think so. After all, he does a fine job piloting Starbug, and firing bazooka's at all the things that try to kill him.
