I do not know who said this, but I heard a discussion on abortion debate in the US when I was in the shower last night, it was on TV.

One lady said "This person argued about the rights of the fetus as a person blah blah blah..." and I just snorted at the bullshit. Then someone else came on and said what's in the topic title, as well as:

"There are more pro-choice Republicans in Congress than there are anti-abortion Democrats."

He also said the pro-choice vote would be huge and overturning Roe would be a bad, a very bad idea for the GOP.

I know I'm speaking from my own faith in humanity here (which, lately, is becoming more of a faith and a hope than a reality or at least a possibility), but I don't think that people in this country would let it get that extreme. Let me rephrase: It may get that extreme, but it won't stay that way. Before Roe vs. Wade, women were dying. The reason it passed and had been so widely accepted is because people could actually remember losing sisters, mothers, friends, to back-alley or self-induced abortion. Now, people take the right for granted. Except for the occasional woman who abandons their baby because for whatever reason, abortion was never an option for them, there isn't any visible reason to be grateful. When that option is taken away, you are going to see women die. Because abortion bans do not stop abortion, they stop safe and legal abortion. When women start dropping like flies, when they have to experience firsthand what it is to be flung back into the dark ages, when they wake up and realize that the right-to-lifers and televangelists aren't going to be raising their kids and that they sold out women's rights, you bet your a** things are going to turn right back around. And maybe this time, we'll take it seriously and not let some sanctimonious, misogynist old white men make decisions that women and doctors should be making.

I just worry about how long that will take. How many generations of women are going to have to endure forced pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood before society realizes what it's done to them? Will I see my sisters, my daughter, my granddaughters endure it?

But that's just my most hopeful idea of what will happen if Roe is overturned. What REALLY worries me is that my peers really do value the life of a fetus over the rights and life of a woman.
