Archie had no great love for places with excessive grass and dirt and trees. Back home, he had been completely made of synthetic materials and had never left the house without being carried five feet off of the ground, so anything that creeped or crawled or chittered but wasn't human-looking kind of freaked him out when it wasn't surrounded by large amounts of plastic and concrete. Still, he was on the fast track to repairing his relationship with Alek, so when the toddler had screamed, "WOODS, GRAN'CHIE!" Archie had obliged. It seemed like a strange place for a kid to want to play, but Alek was a strange kid. He was certainly the only real kid Archie had ever met who preferred piccolos to stuffed animals.

The biggest obstacle Archie encountered in granting the kid's wish was that he had no idea where one could find woods in Gaia that wasn't prohibitively far away. Eventually he came to the conclusion that parks were kind of like forests, and... oh hey, that park where he had met Sara Two-moons kind of faded into a woodsy place if you went all the way to the back! Perfect!

It was with great pride that Archie carried a smiling Alek through that very park and deposited him about five feet from the treeline. "Watch out for kidnappers," he warned as he took a seat on a large rock and pulled several crumpled pieces of paper out of his pocket.

"What're those?" Alek asked with a frown.

"Nothing important. Just don't talk to strangers."

Alek nodded and scampered toward the forest, his calloused bare feet clapping rhythmically over the rocks and sticks in his path.

The trees of the forest had been serving the two today. As Kyo was going over with Oak, one of his lessons of the week. Both of them holding out books. One of which came from the library in the head quarters, which held the information about treants. That one Oak was reading, but the one Kyo was reading didn't really hold any importance.

"Ok Oak, so what is the wood called in the center of the tree?"

"Umm... is it Heartwood?"

"Your catching on Oak, awesome job!" The elf beamed down on his charge. Oak might only be a toddler, but it was always a good idea to work on studies. Knowledge is always a wonderful power to have... especially if it's about yourself.

Kyo began to hum to himself a tune he had learned in his past. Too long ago that in fact he couldn't remember what it was called or why he had learned it, but he embraced the tune yet. The two focused on there studies, not even aware of the creatures skittering around them. Then all of a sudden the sound of a scream echoed through the trees. Luckily Kyo was an elf so the sounds came easily to himself.

"That voice sounds some what common, like some one we've met before." Kyo nodded, but shrugged his shoulders.
"Oh well..."

Alek sobered and stilled as he saw movement and heard quiet voices up ahead. At first, he didn't recognize the other boy, after all, he was bigger, his hair was longer, and he was kind of... more treelike overall. But after a moment of staring, his eyes flickering back and forth between Oak and Kyo, Alek put two and two together.

"Hey, 's you!" he said happily, shaking his hand in an excited wave. "Why you sittin' in the woods?"

Alek? Kyo suddenly remembered it had been a few months since he had seen or heard from Dixie. The elf pierced his eyes to get a better view of this boy. It surely was Alek, but... older.

Oak looked up from his book and stared at the happy sounding boy. Scratching at his head, Oak suddenly remembered who this boy was. It was Alek. It had been a while since he heard or seen him.
"Hi... Alek. We just sitting here having a lesson. Kyo was teaching me on gardening and... Umm... what was it called... bot...? Botany?"

Oak looked up at his guardian.

Kyo gave him a nod and a smiled.
"Your right and it looks like we are done here. So if you want Oak you can go off and play with Alek. I'll be here, so don't go running off too far and getting in trouble." The elf nodded. Even though he wished Oak was more social with everyone and took the risk of getting into a bit of mischief.

"Thank you Kyo" Oak smiled. Giving his guardian a hug as he jumped up and ran off over to Alek's side.

"Why you out here?" Oak tapped at his wooden chin as he stared at Alek.

Oak! That was the boy's name! He glossed over a bit at the talk of gardens and plants, but that was to be expected. Alek loved the outdoors, but it surely didn't speak to him the same way it spoke to Oak.

"Just playin'," Alek said. He watched Oak tap his chin and idly wondered where he could get a wooden face. It had to be a mask, right? "Lookin' for trees to climb and animals," he elaborated. So far, in this new, slightly larger body, Alek had met a giant dog and seen some squirrels in his yard. He was certain there were better animals in a forest.

"You seen any animals?" Oak shrugged his shoulders. All the animals he saw had been a few squirrels and chipmunks here and there. Other than that his nose was buried in those books Kyo gave him to study.

"You climb up trees?" Oak pondered for a moment. If he was a tree... then would some one try to climb up him? If that where to happen something might break. Oak retreated to himself. Crossing his arms close and in front of his chest.

Alek shook his head. "Just got here." He looked up at the trees when Oak asked if he climbed them. "Dunno. Never did. What's wrong?" he asked, poking the other boy on the forearm. "We dun have to look for animals if you don't want to."

"Oh nothin wrong." Oak smiled alleviated that Alek hadn't climbed up any trees yet. Nothing was really wrong about doing it, it was just the matter of the fact that since he had been part tree which made Oak feel rather offended by the thought.
"We can go look for animals." Oak continued to smile still. Looking for animals could help pass the time by faster and then he wouldn't have to go back to his studies any time soon.

"Where do you want to go look first?"

Hmm. If Oak didn't have a problem with looking for animals, it must have been the climbing trees he had been upset about. Alek had thought it had seemed like a thing you would do in the woods, but he supposed it was different when you had a wood face. Probably just as dumb as if he went around climbing up other little boys. He shrugged and pointed further into the forest. "That way. What kinds live here?" he asked.

"umm..." Oak tapped a finger on his wooden chin, "Squirrels, raccoons, birds, snakes, lizards, frogs, bugs, insects, and a lot others I guess... I don't remember what else I read about in one of my books." The boy nodded a small smile on his face

Alek giggled suddenly as he hopped off in the direction he had pointed. "Those're good. Come on!" He slowed his forward advance and waited for Oak for a moment. The forest was probably more fun with two people anyway. Little did Alek know that with the amount of noise he was making, they were unlikely to see anything at all. "How d'you call a frog?"

Oak nodded and followed along with Alek deeper into the forest. He quietly watched. Wondering to himself if Alek really knew what he was doing. Making that kind of noise they wouldn't be able to find anything or see for a matter of fact.

"Umm I think it's like Riiiibit or something like that. Kyo told me that they 'croak' when they make a sound." The wooden boy nodded and smiled.

Something skittered across the path a few feet ahead of the toddlers. Alek stopped giggling to himself and stared at the spot where whatever it was had slipped back into the brush. Suddenly realizing that laughter and loud stomps weren't going to get them anywhere, the satyr stopped moving completely. He turned to his friend. "That way?" he suggested in a whisper.

Oak shot his adventuring friend a glance, confusion and worry began to set into the wooden brain of his. As soon as he heard Alek whisper it brought the idea to Oak that he may need to be quiet. Naturally of course they where in the outdoors and Oak was part tree, so his steps would remain unnoticed.

Oak sent a nod back to Alek, showing his understanding.
"What you see?" The boy whispered back in a whispered hushed tone.

"Somethin' small?" Alek said, taking a couple of steps forward. They were still on some sort of path, but they would have to go deeper into the trees to see what the animal was, and Alek desperately wanted to. "Follow?" he asked. He almost put on his best 'pwetty pwease' adult bribe face before realizing it probably wasn't going to work on another kid.
