...but really, is there any amount of money that can make up for the loss of your eyesight?

Article

It's a short article, but here's the gist of it:
The Article
The European Court of Human Rights has awarded a Polish woman 25,000 euros ($33,000; £16,000) in damages after she was refused an abortion.

Alicja Tysiac's eyesight worsened drastically after she had her third baby and she fears she may go blind.

The 35-year-old mother was refused an abortion despite warnings that having a baby could make her go blind.

Humans are foremost, visual creatures.

We rely on our sight so much, that our other senses seem of secondary importance. This doesn't mean that our other senses are less important, but that humans put a lot of importance on their sense of sight.

So this is such a violation against her in such an impactful way.

What pregnancy condition would make you go blind?

Eesh!

I don't think any amount of money can make up for the loss of my eyesight. Hell, it'd probably all go to taking care of the kid(s) anyways. Unless there was a surgical procedure that could repair eyesight.

To be honest, I can't imagine living without my eyesight. Losing that might be enough for me to consider ending my own life.

That said, out of curiosity, what did she have that could cause her to lose her sight because of giving birth?

I had to go just over a week without glasses and it was hell, so to have my eyesight damaged like hers would be a nightmare.

Having your eyesight damaged is a huge health risk, and she should have been allowed to have an abortion. Does she have to have organs hanging out, or lose a limb to count as a medical need?

The articles I found are all really vague. I gleaned that she had (some kind) of pre-existing eye condition, that was presumably exacerbated by the term of pregnancy, which ultimately led to the retinal hemorrhage that damaged her vision. I don't know what kind of eye disease there would be to make one vulnerable to that kind of hemorrhaging, but it is possible that she had weak blood vessels in her eyes? If her pregnancy caused her blood pressure to elevate (as can happen during pregnancy), its possible that this caused stress on these blood vessels, and the subsequent bleeding, perhaps?

That's just ridiculous.

'Cause babies are so much more precious than eyesight, y'know. Even if you can't see them.

Blindness isn't such a terrible handicap..., if you are born that way. When you are stricken with blindness later in life -- after you have been able to see your whole life -- the results must be..., well they would just plain suck.

I think of all the things I wouldn't be able to do if I were to become blind.

Read -- sure, there is braile; but, to be honest, I doubt that I could acquire the skills necessary to read by touch.

Watch television/movies -- yeah, sound is great; but, I would rather see my characters and read subtitles than hear them and not see them at all.

Drive -- and, for someone who has spent as many hours on the road as I have, a life without the freedom my car provides would be hell.

Use of the internet -- again, this goes back to the whole reading/watching tv thing.

I also couldn't cook, swimming would be hella' scary, I couldn't enjoy the beauty of any visual art, and, really, I probably wouldn't even be able to function as a human -- walking down the halls would not be an easy task without the aid of vision.

As has been said, there is no price on a person's vision -- no amount of money could convince me to go blind.

Enya I agree. I'd just die if I lost my sight now. I take a lot of things I see for granted like the trees. Oh they're not pretty, but when the sun hits the tree at the right place, yeah it can be pretty. I'd totally miss that and much more.

I also enjoy driving, I can't wait till I get my license so I can take my friends out wherever.

I completely agree.I can't imagine being blind now. I'd have to have help going everywhere, I couldn't drive, and reading is one of mymain pleasures in life.

For the record, it is possible to restore your eyesight via corneal transplant. Though I must admit, the idea of having some dead guy's eyes in ya is kinda creepy. gonk

While I don't see why she would have a kid even if it'll make her go blind, I respect her descision. If the thing would kill her, then I would probably start asking a few questions...
