I'm personally anti-pick b/c you pick people miss out on alot: slapping, tapping, the joys of walking the bass etc.

I use a pick whenever I want the sound of it.
But I mainly use my fingers, since I'm a slap freak.

i will use a pick when its needed, equally good with pick as i am Fingers, actually i might be better with my Fingers, but when i play with a Pick your whole arm goes into playing (usually) and i can just sort of feel it better, but without a pick is more Comfortable and Natural
i play With my Fingers Mainly, Then i'd say Pick would come next, all the times i'm playing at the Computer with Music Going so i can Hear What I'm Playing, then Slap, and now i'm trying to get ht Ring Finger into it, like Steve Harris cos i Cant go that Fast with a Pick or my Fingers

I actually enjoy pick players.
I always dislike it when people hate on people who use picks.

Im all about pick, Sure i can play by finger and slap n pop just as good as anyone else but i favored pick over my 2 years of playing and now im just addicted to it. Really gives you an upper edge in some songs then using your fingers

I dont use a pick anymore, except for when I was having bad problems with blisters, or cuts on my fingers. I just find different ways to get the sound out of my instrument, and I have way more control over the bass with 2 fingers, rather than a pick. My choice though.

I only use a pick when I play guitar, and only when I play rhythm lines at that. On bass, I never use a pick.
It sounds so much better when you play bass with fingers, and playing without a pick enables you to do a lot of finger techniques. If you take care of your hands when you don't play and watch the clock when you do, especially if you're working hard on intense songs, your blisters won't be as bad.
But hey, that's just my view on things. Everyone has their own way of doing things and if a pick works for you better than fingers, by all means use one.

well of course it depends on the style your playing for, like metal and punk and stuff you're definatelly going to need to pick it, but for crisp, nice, warm sound for like say rock or pop you have teh use the fingers. i much prefer fingers anywayz its alot more fun.

If you play metal you don't "definitely" need a pick. There are a fair number of heavy metal bassists who have never used a pick in their lives, and a good many more who are part-time pick bassists. I think it depends on what kind of sound your band wants out of the bass; picks tend to give a twangier sound while fingers naturally give off a more natural one. Plus it also depends on what you as a bassist prefer.

I use a pick mostly. I've been playing bass with a pick for 3 years. But just recently, i've been teaching myself how to play with my fingers. I hate the starting of playing with my fingers. Sore fingertips is the worst. =/
