Kimo was a native islander. He was also a PE coach at the local high school. And he was a recruiter and mentor for the DA. He didn't know Daniel, but that wasn't a problem. He was well liked by the community. He didn't expect there to be a problem in recruiting the child. He'd already taken necessary measures to make sure that no official would contact any other officials. No use in losing someone with fire powers. He could prove handy.

He found Daniel outside near the school, "Aloha! Pehea `oe?" He greeted Daniel, and asked how he was, "I'm Coach Kimo, from the high school. The wailua kai," he winked. He was considered to be a very good surfing coach, and had earned the nickname of water spirit in the native language, "You sound like a wailua ahi," he tagged Daniel as a fire spirit, and as he spoke, held a glass of water he'd had in his hand upside down. The water didn't budge, except for a drop which game out slowly. He move the glass right side up again, letting the drop fall down at his feet, and then handed the glass to Daniel, to show let the boy explore for himself that it was indeed really water.

"I know fire and water are opposing elements, but evolved powers have been proven to be similar. I won't tell anyone that you are wailua ahi, and will make sure that all rumors are stopped. We'll keep it quiet, so no one comes after you, like we see in the news sometimes. I can help you, if you'd like. Would you like that? We'll have to ask your parents too. We can be good friends. Us wailuas should stay together."

Wailua-ahi Kimo smiled warmly at Daniel, waiting for his answer.

Daniel was sat out in one of his favourite places. He'd been seeing more of it ever since the incident - whenever he couldn't stand the looks people gave him anymore, he would come here. A set of stairs rose up from the ground, with a bland, uniform metal railing running along the exposed edge. As many children before him had discovered, the spaces between railings were the perfect size to slot their legs through. Then you could let your legs dangle off the edge and rest your forehead against the bars. From this vantage point, you could see down across the short distance to the beach where the sea roared. It wasn't very well known amongst adults, who didn't have the time to think about hidden places and metal railings. It surprised Daniel when he was spoken to, shocking him out of daydreams about dinosaurs and soccer. It didn't surprise him much that whoever it was knew his name though. A lot of people knew his name these days. He only wished it wasn't because of the fire.

"O ia mau n?He felt the same as usual, different and strange. How else could he be expected to feel? "A `o `oe?" He asked how the Coach was, listlessly, out of politeness. He smiled at the talk of spirits. Somehow, being a wailua ahi was better than being a fire hazard. Resting the side of his head on the railings so that he could see the wailua-kai, he watched wide-eyed as he did his trick with the water. If he could do that, that made the coach the same as him. But he'd never heard of Kimo, had never seen him in the papers or anything. Did the coach hide his powers? Or was it just that the water control didn't scare people? He stared down into the water as he swirled it around the glass. Real water, not some kind of trick. The wailua-kai was just that.

"You can do that? You can really make people stop talking about it?" Caught by the idea of everything going back to normal, he pulled himself out of the railings to swivel around and face Kimo. "Will things go back to normal?" Daniel didn't know anything about training. As far as he was concerned, the fire had been a one-off. He didn't really have fire powers, just a tendency to make embers appear. There was nothing dangerous about embers and fire in his hair that didn't burn. He wasn't like the wailua-kai, was he?

"Normal is what we're used to. You are wailua ahi, Daniel, that is something you now know, and you can't take that back. You will need to learn to make that normal for yourself. It's not a bad thing, it's special, you are chosen to be very special and maybe very important, if only you embrace it." Kimo playfully pulled part of the water from the glass, squirting it upwards, "Either for silly fun or seriousness."

He paused, and continued to address the issue, "I've already spoken to some people. There will always be those that remember and talk sometimes, but I already had a lot of the adults promise to stop, and promise to help stop others. We can't make anyone do anything, but we can help them choose to do what we would like. And I can help you not accidently show your powers again. Eventually people will forget. Things won't get better immediately, but they will get better with time. They will become normal for you."

Neshaka
Daniel stared at the glass as Kimo spoke. Special? He wasn't so sure he believed that. At least he might be able to do something cool with his powers though, right? Fire could be pretty cool. His mind skipped over the important part. That didn't really matter to him. It was unfortunate that he was staring at the water when Kimo pulled his trick though. It squirted upwards into his face, hit him squarely between the eyes.
"Hey!" he yelled. Shaking his face, he grinned widely. At least Kimo had a sense of humour.

He grin faded quite quickly as Kimo went back to being serious. At least people wouldn't talk about him anymore. He didn't think anyone he went to school with would forget so easily, but it would be better if the adults at least stopped. Maybe he could live with the fire, if he could control it.
"I guess I could live with that. Will I really control fire, like you do water?"

"Yeah, I'm sure you can do little tricks like that," Kimo winked, "But your power might be weaker or stronger than mine. That is something we will have to learn. You probably aren't going to do anything too big just yet, it took me a long time to learn some of what I can do. Hey, summer's coming up, we'll have a lot of time to explore. What do you think? Would you like to? Would your parents mind? But, remember, it'd have to be our secret. People won't stop talking if you tell them."

Neshaka
Daniel shifted around a little bit. The coach actually made the whole deal sound exciting, rather than some kind of illness, like a wart on his face. At least with small stuff he wouldn't be able to do much damage to anything anyway. And it wasn't like he had much to do with his summer anymore.
"Ok! I don't think my parents would mind. They keep worrying that I'll suddenly explode or something, so I guess they'll let me do stuff. Especially with a teacher." Daniel grinned a little. "I won't tell anyone, I swear."
Getting a little bit over-excited, a fat ember jumped into existence and wound its way upwards vefore fading. Daniel looked rather nervous and tried to calm himself down, taking a sip out of the glass.
"How do you teach something like that anyway

Kimo laughed at Daniel's excitement, "I'll make sure you don't spontaneously combust," It had happened to Evos, especially in the earlier days when they first started the evolution. There were still occasional confirmed stories about things like that. Kimo's statement wasn't a serious one though, it was an amused one.

"Alright, little spirit, first lesson, everytime you flame something like you just did, I want you to stop a moment and reflect on it. Other than emotions, what did you feel? Is it like a muscle you can work? Think about it and when you know, then you can work on controlling it. It's hard to explain what it is exactly. It just is. Excited movements from me usually comes from somewhere in my head," he smiled, "I've learned how to keep myself still even when I'm emotional. It can be pretty disastrous if I'm out surfing and get excited and bounce the water around," he laughed, "Wailua ahi, I have some stories for you. This will be fun."

Neshaka
Daniel smiled a little. He didn't doubt that Kimo could put him out if he set himself alight. He didn't really want to set himself alight in the first place, but he kept that to himself.

Daniel digested that slowly. A muscle? If there was something, he'd never felt it. These things seemed to happen out of nowhere. Still, he took this to heart and resolved to find out what he could.
"Ok, I'll try" was all he said out loud to Kimo. He grinned widely at Kimo's surfing comment. He could practically see what would happen if Kimo let himself go out of control.
"I sure hope so. Otherwise it'll be like another school." He grimaced in disgust.

Kimo shook his head, "NNnooo, no boring school lessons for you, wailua ahi! I don't do the whole boring school thing, even as a high school teacher. They haven't brainwashed me that way yet. It mihgt be your job to whack me around a bit if I get that way though." He sat down and laid back a little, good-naturedly. This was a nice little spot.

"So, when you wanna start? What's a good time for you, Dan-dan?" Apparently Kimo never stuck to one name.

Daniel gave a sigh of relief, glad that he wouldn't be forced into taking yet another type of schooling. "I'll keep that in mind! I'm sure I can keep you in line -or out of it, I guess." He laughed loudly, knowing that no one else was around besides the two of them. Even if the adults did find out about the area, it wasn't as though they would care about a place where the kids just dangled their legs out to look down on everything. "We can start anytime!" He said enthusiastically. "Like... Like... Right now!" He was only slightly excited about training. Ever so slightly.

Kimo chuckled along with Daniel, and then laughed at his enthusiasm, "Now, wailua ahi? Well, what do you suggest? You know, I never created water, I just learned that I was a wailua when I got mad at my sister one day and sprayed her juice up her nose." Kimo still looked positively thrilled with the memory, "That's about all I did for a month to all my friends afterwards... Not very befitting of a wailua, I'm afraid. But it taught me how to use it when I wanted to with what force I wanted to and then to stop. Now, I wouldn't suggest spurting fire sprites up people's noses..." He laughed at the thought, looking around as he did so. They needed something relatively safe to start with.

Daniel was genuinely excited about things. He was forced to keep himself down, though, for fear of another spurt of power popping up somewhere. "Well, we could... I could practice by trying to set tiny things on fire, or I could try to stop a bonfire or anything, really!" Anything was better than nothing. Just so long as he could keep people from talking about it by getting better. "Up their noses?" He laughed loudly at i, unable to keep himself contained. "That could definitely liven up a boring conversation, or even better, a lesson." He thought about it for a second. "Not that I'd actually do it, though." He laughed it off as a joke, following Kimo's eyes to try to find a place they could train peacefully.

"Oooh, I'm sure your classmates would be thrilled with you," Kimo chuckled as he leapt down to pull some driftwood together, "Though if you want to keep your reputation in check, I'd advise against it.... Unless maybe you could pull it off as a freak accident with something else in the class." His eyes shone with idea. Kimo was definitely not some rule-strict coach.

"Here, how about trying to set this stuff ablaze? You know, you would come in useful at a camp. I never could get the hang out starting fires."
PostPosted: Tue Dec 26, 2006 6:58 am

"They'd probably chase me until one of us ran out of energy." Daniel laughed lightly. He wondered what would really happen if he tried that out on some of the other students. "Hmmm. How could I pull that off?" His finger tapped his chin idly. There were so many ways that he could pretend that he hadn't been the cause of it. Like saying that it must have just been a trick their eyes had played on them. ...And their nose.

"Okay! I think I can do that." Summoning as much power as he thought necessary, Daniel faced the pile of things. It was hard, considering he didn't yet have much control of his powers. It started as a few flickers. Then, it actually started burning. Seeing the flames got him excited, and made the makeshift fire glow even brighter than it had before.

"Oh, I knew Mr. Burles science class is...well," Kimo waved a hand, "That's not befitting of a Wailua." Kimo was more than interested in knowing if Daniel could pull a stunt like that off, and he "innocently" gave the boy a way to do it.

He watched the fire, excited at first, then waved a hand, "Pooh...Do you know the color of the hottest fire in existance, Wailua mine? It's not red and yellow stuff." How hot could this boy get? "Bet you couldn't melt the metal I stuck in there." He'd really have some report to make if he could!

"In a word: Boring." He stuck his tongue out at the mere thought of it. "Aww. Okay, fine." He pouted for a moment as his fun was killed before it could live.

Momentarily letting go of his control over the flames, Daniel looked up to the man. "It's like... Blue or something, right?" At least, that's what he'd thought that his teacher had said. Now he was slightly regretting not listening to them. "Bet'cha I could! Just watch!" He again put all the concentration he could into making the fire burn brighter. It slowly advanced through the hotter colors before stopping at a dim blue. By this point, Daniel was sweating immensely.

The bright color only lasted a few seconds before he fell over.

Kimo watched Daniel, eyes dancing in amusement. He would have to teach this one how to read between the lines. And then his amusement slowly switched to the rare look of being impressed. Kimo was a hard teacher and coach, and though compliments were abundant enough, most of his students craved and rarely - if ever - got the look that now passed on Kimo's face. It meant that he believed that someone really had something.

And Daniel really had something. He just NOW started spouting flames and he could control them like that? He scribbled mental notes in his mind to make sure that he was a mentor that Daniel would always stick close to... He did NOT want to be on this kid's bad list as he got older and better.

He was ready for Daniel to fall over though, knowing the boy was out-doing himself, and easily caught him, shuffling his hair in a noogie, "You, m'boy, are going to be the best Wailua ever! But'll still beat you in any surf...Wanna hit the beach, or a snack stand somewhere? My treat..."

It was his way of calling it a day, and his way of setting his stamp of approval on Daniel. He knew that the town was still up in arms about his recent flame outburst, but Kimo guessed that if nothing else the people would respect him enough to leave the boy alone while he was around.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 29, 2007 6:01 pm

Had Daniel actually been able to see the complimentary look from Kimo, he would have likely been overjoyed. But he had to keep all of his attention on the flames so that they wouldn't blow up or something. He hadn't accidentally lost control yet, so he wasn't sure what would happen. It could merely poof out, continue burning where he'd left off, or it could...

He didn't want to finish that sentence.

His concentration wasn't enough, though. He quickly had to let it go, or he would have completely blacked out. At least he was able to fall with a smile on his face.

When he looked up, he realized that Kimo had caught him mid-fall. In an attempt to shield himself from the noogie, he put his hands up to his head. "You better believe I will be." He beamed. "I say we get something to eat!" He nodded, needing to give himself more energy after burning it all on the fire.

Maybe, if Kimo was with him, the man at the snack stand would stop looking at him like he was a total freak.

"Mmm, food... Why'd I even ask?" Apparently in his usual jovial mode, Kimo snatched Daniel up in the air from his half-lying position, and set him down right-side-up on the floor. In reality, he was making sure the boy could stand or if he needed the support. The other Evo knew how it could be if you over-extended yourself.

"Boys... We are all bottomless pits," Kimo joked as he did so, "I love arguing with the girls about how I manage to keep the pounds off. Let's go for, little Wailua!"
