Kechiri 1 It was a long hot Matori day, she was looking after her sister and what was a good older sister to do but bring her sis along with her everywhere...including the pub for a few drinks, low alcohol for her and none for Daanu, they sat outside at one of the tables under an umbrella. Kechi's crew might show up at any minute but for now it was just her and her little sis.
"I am sorry I have been so busy lately, Dad is close by if you need too, but I thought we could catch up." She often lived quite the fast paced life. It wasn't in her nature to take anything slowly except the steady build up of her career as a first class pirate captain. She was very career driven. There would be plenty of time for that other family stuff later. She wanted to feel the wind, to sail free and untethered, with herself steering everything so to speak. To bring her people safely home after every sail and to strengthen and bond her crew into a finely tuned unit. They would be well paid and well taken care of. These were her dreams.

'Low' alcohol, in this case, meant a large mug of strong ale for Kechiri rather than the same tankard of rum or other hard spirits. Her sister had gone in for fresh fruit juice rather than the fermented sort. While their parents clearly didn't much mind exposure to alcohol, Daanu had tried it only once. Her cousin's name had been written in and crossed out of her black book of grudges since, his trick on her since repaid.* She still didn't understand why people liked the stuff.
But that was okay. There were still many things little Daanu didn't understand. Currently, she was scribbling away in her big book, writing down everything she saw or heard. To Kechi, it might seem a familiar state. She'd been seen doing the same in a meadow, or up in a tree. Once or twice above a creature pen. A bar was just one more unfamiliar environment to catalogue. Big yellow eyes glanced up after punctuating a sentence, returning to her seagoing sibling. "Alright. How have you been, big sister?"
(With interest. She'd salted his morning tea at breakfast next.)

Kechi 2 ( I adore her)
"What are you writing? Stories perchance? Or non fiction?" She always wondered what Daanu was writing about with friendly sisterly curiousity. Quite a few of the family were afflicted with the writing bug, though the beast tamers usually took notes, Tathy too wrote about all kinds of things.
"I have been well! Thank you for asking." For some reason it was always easy for her to talk to Daanu, she suspected they had much in common in addition to being sisters. "How about you?" She relished her ale, it was a fine vintage and stronk.

The reed pen stopped it's scratching, soon sheathing into a pocket on her belt. Clever little thing, her sneaky uncle's design. "Notes. I have not been here before, and I like knowing what I first thought of a new thing. Some of the games look interesting." She passed the heavy book across the table, letting Kechi peruse it as she wished. Big sister would find observations, some somewhat rough sketches, some extrapolation following each neat section. Daanu often did this when she found a new big, or a beast she'd never seen before. Apparently, it seemed appropriate to do the same for sufficiently new situations.
Serious little girl that she was, the younger sister only nodded. "So I see. You look happier now that you are out at sea more often. Feel lighter to be around. I am glad of this." She looked down, patted the book and finally smiled. Papa got me to thinking, and I have taken to writing down my thoughts. It helps when I cannot remember something."

Kechi smiled down at the book. "I can't say enough about your excellent penmenship, and papa is very awesome I agree. I don't know what we would do without him, particularly me, I think that out of everyone you and he understand me the best." She kissed her little sister on the forehead. "I keep a captains log of places I have been, it looks similar but with a few more weather observations. Something a friend of the family told me is to go to the same tree every day for a year and write down your observations of it. That way you get a very good grasp on observation skills and what one specific area goes through, there will be subtle changes you would not see otherwise."
She glanced around. "The knife games? I could teach you some."

While true, a compliment brought a little smile to Kechi's sister in a way unexpected. The little blue hybrid looked around, checking again for anyone else that might be listening. Then, leaning in, she cupped one hand beside her mouth and whispered. "I had to ask Uncle Viltre how to stop spelling 'recommendation'."
"Would you please? I have seen you play some when you think I am not looking, and they look fun. I would need to borrow one of yours, though." Daanu had not brought one of her own, as Papa and Mama had differing opinions on steel in children's hands.* One held that it was to be earned, and they were trying so hard to avoid spats right about now. She had something pointy anyway, and had gone with Kechi besides. Nobody smart would try anything around Kechi.**
*(Specifically Daanu and Iorhel. One might cut someone she didn't mean to, and the other might leave a dead body somewhere. There were differing opinions on which was which.) **(Of course, that did not preclude the stupid, natural or afflicted. In present company, this applied most keenly to those persons nearby increasingly befuddled with drink.)

Kechi took a long draw from her ale and dug out a small knife. "In this game you spread your fingers out and place the blade between them and go faster. Best to practice real slow at first, if you bleed, Dad will bleed me out." He would too.
"I adore Uncle Viltre. I should ask him to come for a ride on the ship so I can learn from him too." She was inherently drawn to people that were highly intelligent, like her present company.
She gave Dannu the jewelled blade and took another out of her own. "As you are underage I will have the handicap of drink."

"We may have to ask Auntie Ein and Var if we can borrow him first. They might object if we do not." She took the pretty little thing, examining every shiny angle of her sister's blade. The smaller girl did not attempt to make it dance between her fingers. She still hadn't mastered doing that with a pen just yet; trying with sharp things would only lead to more colorful (and potentially shorter) fingers. She knew not to fool around with pointy things.
That said, Kechiri's sister had only a limited knowledge of weaponry to begin with. So to start, Daanu tried the only grip she knew for a knife: the eating grip. Had to twist the wrist around a little to get the point down, and overall the motion was awkward when she tried her first row. The frown came home to her pale face, settling as it often did between spiky brows. This was not quite right. The little girl looked back up to her sister, stopping her own blade until she might safely look again.

Kechi 5
She smiled bright encouragement at her sister, probably looking a disturbing amount like Aunty Ein from which she stole the smile for her own use occassionally. She showed her sister with her own had how she gripped the knife and adjusted Daanu's fingers gently. "Slow at first as you are demonstrating is very good. Dad would skin me if you got hurt." Kechiri displayed for Daanu what she would eventually be able to acheive with practice, dancing the knife swiftly through her fingers. "It is best to practice a bit every day, you can keep that knife, my gift to you, better to not be defenseless and knives have many uses. I will show you how to sharpen it later on a wet stone as well.
"You are right, I would not want to get on the bad side of Aunty Ein or Aunty Variel." They were scary when they wanted to be and even more disturbing...capable.

Under some instruction, the smaller of the Ninyelt had swapped to a hammer grip, point down, just as her elder shew'd. Fingers wiggled about the shiny hilt, getting a feel for it first, finding the comfiest place for each, and tightened down. Again, much more easily this time, she began to hop the knifepoint over each knuckle.
As she did, the blue girl kept thinking. She hadn't considered the possibility of getting on either aunt's bad side. The thing about Auntie Ein 's smile was that it had no ulterior facets. It seldom dropped, mostly brightened or dimmed throughout the day. She didn't have the fierce grin or sharp smirk of her mates, and it felt good to see it on Kechiri's face.
Of course, shiny presents felt good, too. Especially surprise ones. Daanu's knowing eyes went wide with it, and the blade nearly missed a pass, just scratching the top layer of skin. "...! Thank you!" She might have leapt up on the table there and then, but Mama had insisted on table manners. One (1) hug for Kechi when I get up.

Kechiri smiled and immediately inspected the small scratch, no worse than a papercut, she had done a bit worse when she was practicing.
"You bet little sis, I love you, you deserve pretty sharp things." She grinned. Daanu was special to her, as all her sisters were but special in her own way. Perhaps it was because Daanu also looked like her too, perhaps it was the spicey off kilter personality with like drawing like but Kechi also knew she would die for Elaxi to protect her, she needed a different kind of love and she competed with her brother who seemed to take more after Uncle Thal in relaxedness excepting the whole tentacle warlock thing. There was more to Ushiruin than she had been able to suss out but she loved all her siblings.
Kechiri brought out a second knife and joined her sister in the game, she too went slower and deliberately, it was better for teaching.
"What do you think about our brother, I havent quite figured him out yet."

More pretty knives? The thought crossed her mind unbidden, and the younger sibling considered juggling them all. No, no that would be silly. Tho' she might well ask an uncle or a cousin for tips on bettering her coordination...? The question broke her concentration, and again, another little scratch. Blue fingers came up, letting their owner suck at the wound a moment, and laid back onto the table. The blade in hand slowed, going more deliberately afterwards.
"What do you mean? Is this about his behind-friends?" A moments pause, and little Daanu's smile cracked a little wider in realization. Even to so serious a child, butt jokes were the peak of humor. Kechi has asked her a question, tho'', so butts could wait. Giggles were stifled before she continued. Mostly. "Underneath-friends, I mean. They know the whole world was once ocean, so they still swim all over. You cannot see them?"

"Oh I see them, its downright otherwordly and I don't know whether to be fascinated with his critter skills, or terrified that they will get er playful with my own ship one day." It was a sailor type dread, the tentacles were smallish now, but they would probably grow as her brother grew in power. Who knew how those creepy nature magics worked. She grinned at her sister. "You know you are pretty smart, how do you know so much?" She had always wondered what that extra shadow was around her sister, they all seemed to have something, everyone but Uncle Thal.''She ruffled Daanu's hair. She loved her little sister dearly, she loved her whole family but sisters were just special. Kechi took another sip of her weakish ale. She had to be good, she had to be. Letting her play with a knife was one think but getting inebriated would be worse.

Her new knife went slowly now, bereft of the main part of Daanu's attention. Right now it was building the beginnings to muscle memory. "They are from this world, do not worry. And they like him. They listen. Why would their being friendly come as a bad thing?" Daanu had begun to doubt her sister saw the same things as she did. The underneath-creatures needed something to touch as they wished. Ushiruin always said something quiet when they did. Maybe an invitation?
Again, people wondering why she was smart. It wasn't obvious? She needed to talk to 'Saei about this sort of thing. He knew what seeing things no one else did was like, he might know a better way to explain. ...Or he might wiggle his arms and try nonsensical gestures to illustrate. Either would be acceptable. But Kechi needed an answer. "I watch things. I have been writing things down. I think they understand people-speech, or they can learn. It may also be that they like his voice."

Kechiri shuddered again. "They just creep me out okay? They are the stuff of sailor nightmare and he feeds them cookies shaped like pirates okay." She had seen it happen. Granted her view was a tad obscured by her cover bush but that was besides the point. She had visions of them growing up and attacking her ship whether her brother was on it or not.
"I can't begrudge them that, he has a lovely voice, deeper than Dads." Her Dad's was deep enough though Uncle Thal beat them both with a base rumble.
"You are a swift learner, must get that from both our parents." Kechiri was a stubborn learner.
"It could be that I don't have much magic and he just seems scary powerful already?" She didn't know she wasn't actually afraid of her baby brother but he seemed to have some nice buffs that on her had gone into constitution, craftyness and speed. That was the best way she could describe it.
