"I changed my mind," Lucky announced to Sherry without warning. He immediately stopped in the middle of the life lab hallway, holding at arm's length a large (sealed) clear plastic box that contained an equally large book. "I can't do this."

It was a pretty silly sight. His age alone made him appear fairly out of place everywhere on the island - he looked well over forty now, with a short beard and the start of some greying creeping into his hair from both temples, but his mannerisms hadn't changed at all from before he'd been horseman-cursed that way.

"But you can," replied. "Come on, nearly there." She reached out to grab his arm, just above the elbow, and gently guide him down the hallway. She hoped he didn't fight it.

Sherry felt a little silly, but at this point she was going to get him into that office come hell or high water. She'd been coaxing him along this far, and they'd nearly succeeded - it was too late to turn back now.

"Just go in, say 'Hi, Dr H,' and make sure you sound humble, 'I borrowed this on accident and I want to give it back now.' It'll be fine. There's nothing to be afraid of."

"That's extremely not true," he lamented. But he didn't put up any fight when Sherry all but dragged him along, resuming his slow, sad pace behind her. They really weren't that far from the office now. "There's always something to be afraid of."

"Humble. Yeah. You don't have to worry about that," Lucky said nervously. He looked over his shoulder one last time, as if giving making a break for it one final consideration before giving up on the idea. "Well, if I do die, I'm just letting you know my will is in my room, in my desk, second drawer from the right. You get my old blueprints. And my phone. But you're not supposed to keep the phone, you're supposed to, uh, take a magnet to it, then a hammer, and then burn it, I guess? Anyway, it's all in the will. And tell Caelius you found it like that."

"Okay maybe there is," she said with a sigh. He had a point. There was usually something to be afraid of. "But this time I don't think you need to worry." She gave his arm a soft pat. He was taking the book back. Surely it would earn him some 'good points' and nothing scary.

Sherry smiled and sighed and gave Lucky the most reassuring look she could. "There won't be any need for a will." She paused for a moment, then added, "I'm happy to know you count me a close enough friend to trust me with your blueprints and your phone care, though. Rest assured I would follow the instructions to the letter. But I won't need to today, Lucky." Her smile had grown warm. "When this is done and the book is back where it belongs, we can have a bit of wine and talk about how not dead you are."

There it was. The door to H's office. They weren't right outside, but every step was one step closer. "You'll be fine," she said again. "I'll wait right out here. Are you ready?"

"You're right, you're right." He could make this quick. He was only here because Sherry had convinced him over the course of half an imaginary year that this would be a step in the right direction. He'd only taken the book because it looked like the building was going to collapse, and it would have been destroyed. And he hadn't opened the box - maybe that would count for something. Probably not. Either way, life division would get their book back and maybe that would help somebody. He shifted the book-box to under one arm, and tried smiling back. It looked very fake. "Yeah. Let's do that."

Lucky finally stepped away from Sherry and up to the familiar door. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and knocked only once on the door to H's office.

Sherry nodded. Of course she was right.

"Yes, we will." She nodded again and took a step back as he moved toward the door. "I'll be here."

Sherry was proud of Lucky for taking that step into H's office. It was a step in the right direction, she thought.
