Quote: This enemy can be fought solo! You're attacked by a group of three small animals -- your choice what sort, but they should be native to the Louisiana area. Their eyes are crazed, and their action are erratic, implying that there's no sense behind their actions. These are wild beasts, and they attack together. Hit Points: 10 each, for a total of 30, but one dies for each 10 HP damage you do to them. Damage: Each does 2 each time you attack, for a total of 6 to start. This number goes down as you kill them. If you successfully kill all three animals and reach 500 words, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-40: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 41-90: Moly Flower: a small white flower with a dark root. You're not quite sure what it's for, but decide to keep it. 91-100: Rabid Blood: these creatures have been infected with something that makes their blood potent. It can be vialed and used once to deal an extra 3 damage [after modifiers] on your next successful attack, after which it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.

He had been walking carefully through the woods. Mal was looking for changed Chosen, as much as he thought one could look for changed Chosen. If he had been one of those who changed, he would have gone and found the deepest burrow he could, probably.
But then again, maybe not. Even caught up by that bird, he'd tried to fight. It made him let out a little sigh, almost more a puff of air.
And then he saw the minks. They were cute; they looked kind of like otters, small and furry and long-bodied like otters were. Except that otters generally looked friendly, and these...
These did not look friendly.
Mal stayed very still, watching the three of them as they wound around each other and then went still. And then they lunged, and he was swinging his sword. It wasn't a solid hit, but he managed to catch one of them even as he was subject to three fast snaps from the animals.

Mal maybe felt bad. The minks were cute, actually, even if they were trying to bite him. He felt worse when he hit the most aggressive one hard enough to kill it, and to catch the second one with the edge of the swing, too. "Crap. This is not what I planned to be doing with myself to try to get my self-esteem back at the right place." Beating on small animals was not his idea of either a good time or a way to feel good about himself. He still got bitten, of course, by the remaining two minks. xelhaspixiestix Mal: 40/50 Dmg: 12 Mink HP: 0 x 5 x 10 Word Count: 265

It was hard to remember the wonder of touching a moose's fur and finding it soft when he was dealing with two small, crazy animals. Mal swept his sword around at ankle height and caught the wounded mink, and knocked it away. It bothered him that it didn't get up again, that he was killing them. Mal knew it shouldn't have. It was his life or theirs, pretty much, and he hadn't chosen to use them as cannon fodder. It still bothered him, even as the last mink got a mouthful of his pant leg. xelhaspixiestix Mal: 36/50 Dmg: 6 Mink HP: 0 x 0 x 9 Word Count: 360

For a good long minute, his conscience bit. He watched the last mink move, whipping around at ankle height, and he couldn't make himself hit it. The sword hit dirt instead, and the mink leapt up and caught the cuff of his shirt. "s**t!" It didn't hurt, but that flash of white teeth was bad. These things could kill him. Even one could kill him. Small they might be, but they had a lot of teeth. xelhaspixiestix Mal: 34/50 Dmg: 0 Mink HP: 0 x 0 x 9 Word Count: 436

The incentive of those sharp teeth catching him at least made Mal move again; a glancing stab with the tip of his sword had him swearing through his teeth as it caught him again. Forget it, he was going to invest in jeans and t-shirts specifically for this kind of outing. They didn't always have enough warning, but he thought that it was probably worth it not to keep ruining suits. "Morbid and creepifying," was all he said to himself, watching the wicked little thing as it darted back and forth. xelhaspixiestix Mal: 32/50 Dmg: 3 Mink HP: 0 x 0 x 6 Word Count: 527

This time, tracking the movement was easier. Mal just had to shove his conscience down into a pocket somewhere, leave his head static and empty while he did what he had to. He hit the last mink squarely, a little harder than he meant to. It was startling, a startling amount of blood from something so small. Mal let his breath out in a slow sigh, and frowned at his sword, his hands. s**t. Hopefully they weren't changed Chosen, or changed innocents. That would be -- no, that probably wouldn't be worse. He pushed his conscience down for now, though he knew it would niggle at him anyway. It tended to. xelhaspixiestix Mal: 30/50 Dmg: 12 Mink HP: 0 x 0 x 0 Word Count: 637

He checked the bodies of the sad little minks, just to be sure that they weren't Chosen or transformed. But he couldn't see anything there, no clothes. They looked wild; nothing tangled in their fur and no sign of anything on them.
