PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Dear friends,
We've just posted online the brand-new edition of our Operation Politically Homeless (OPH) manual!
Written by longtime libertarian activist and OPH fan Scott Kjar, it's been beautifully laid out by graphics master Bill Winter.
The new OPH manual is a great read, whether you're familiar with OPH or have never heard of it before and are curious to learn more.
It tells you just about everything you need to know about OPH: why it was created, how it works, and why and how to do an OPH yourself.
OPH is the Advocates' acclaimed "event in a kit" that can help you discover dozens or even hundreds of libertarian-leaning folks in your community. OPH is one of the great success stories of the libertarian movement. Hundreds of thousands of people have encountered the ideas of liberty through OPH. And *millions* more people are out there, just waiting for someone -- maybe you? -- to introduce them to the ideas of liberty with OPH.
OPH works like magic. And one of the most amazing things about it, as Scott points out, is that it's... fun!
Libertarian outreach -- fun? You bet! Over and over again, I've heard OPH users say that. Scott says it himself in the manual:
"I've been doing OPH for several years. I have administered thousands of Quizzes, seen people with all manner of political views, been asked questions ranging from the insightful to the provocative to the absurd, and generally had fun. That's right, *I had fun*."
I hope you'll check out the manual, and our other OPH material, and learn more about this incredible tool.
The timing couldn't be better. It's summer -- and that's the perfect time for OPH libertarian outreach!
Somewhere near you, this weekend there will be an event -- a political rally, a county fair, a concert, a neighborhood party -- that is perfect for OPH. Will OPH be there? It's up to you.
Learn about OPH through the new manual here: www.TheAdvocates.org/oph-manual.html
And there's still more info -- including photos of OPH in action -- at http://www.theadvocates.org/oph.html
Take the ideas of liberty to your community - and HAVE FUN!

WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE ADVOCATES
* Free State Project Praises Advocates: We were pleased to learn that the Free State project has created a page at their Web site endorsing Advocates tools and particularly encouraging use of the Quiz, OPH, and our Lights of Liberty awards. The Free State Project, which has received a significant amount of national media coverage during the past few years, describes itself as an agreement among 20,000 pro-liberty activists to move to New Hampshire, where they will exert the fullest practical effort toward the creation of a libertarian society. Thanks! http://freestateproject.org/volunteer/lights_of_liberty
* Ebaying the Quiz: Advocates fan Paolo Sica sent us a copy of this letter he sent to Libertarian Party News. Great idea, Paolo! "It's well-known that Internet users are disproportionately libertarian -- as eBay sellers may well be! During the process of moving and cleaning out closets, I include a World's Smallest Political Quiz card with every eBay item I sell. As a matter of fact, I slip one in almost every envelope that I mail, including bills and surveys! It adds negligible weight to the package or envelope, and what a great way to get people with whom you've established even a minor relationship thinking about their politics in earnest. I encourage everyone to keep a stack [of Quiz cards] next to their envelopes and stamps."

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS, UNBELIEVABLE NEWS
by James W. Harris
You Owe the Government Half A Million Dollars
Thanks to local, state and federal politicians, you and your loved ones are in debt -- big time.
According to a groundbreaking story in USA TODAY, federal, state and local governments have run up unfunded obligations of $57.8 trillion.
That amount is so huge it is almost impossible to fully grasp.
But think of it this way: it averages out to $510,678 per American family.
Worse, just like an unpaid credit card debt, the amount is growing, month by month. And at a terrifying rate -- 20% in the past two years alone.
USA TODAY: "The $57.8 trillion liability is the amount that government needs now, stashed away and earning interest, to generate enough cash to pay future obligations. ... Like an unpaid credit card bill, the balance grows every year - - about $25,000 per household annually."
This shocking new number dwarfs all previous reports about government's unfunded liabilities, which usually focus only on the national debt (and sometimes Social Security). USA TODAY arrived at it by pulling together up *all* the sources of government debt and unfunded liabilities.
Here's how USA TODAY breaks this $57.8 trillion debt down in a "per household" model:
Program..................................Liability per household
Medicare.................................$263,377 Social Security..........................$133,456 Federal debt.............................$42,538 Military retirement benefits.............$25,443 State-local debt.........................$16,395 Federal employee retirement benefits.....$14,256 State-local retirement benefits..........$13,257 Other federal............................$1,956
Total....................................$510,678 per household
Most of this debt is to cover the cost of promised retirement benefits for the 79 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964. Those program costs will explode when boomers begin collecting Social Security in 2008 and Medicare in 2011.
To meet these costs will require *massive* tax hikes, *massive* inflation -- and/or a *massive* cutback in the promised benefits of these programs.
Whatever the solution, it threatens to be extraordinarily painful -- a disaster for ordinary Americans, the economy, and future generations.
Meanwhile, most of the politicians who made all these promises and dragged Americans into this mess aren't even aware of it. According to Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., a member of the House Budget Committee quoted in USA TODAY, most members of Congress don't even grasp the size or nature of this incredible problem.
Here is a perfect example of the utter incompetence of government and politicians. For generations, politicians have played Santa Claus to win elections, promising wildly irresponsible social programs and benefits without considering the consequences. Many Americans have gone along with them, figuring that, even if the programs were bloated and inefficient, they probably did more good than harm.
But now the bill is coming due, and we can see the results of this incredible political irresponsibility.
Maybe, just maybe, this will be a wake-up call to Americans: never again put any trust in the promises of pandering politicians.

Pentagon Set to Drop Geneva Anti-Torture Provisions
For several years now, critics around the world have charged that the U.S. government is engaging in systematic mistreatment and even torture of prisoners. These critics have cited, among other things, allegations of secret CIA prisons outside the United States; the practice of so-called "extraordinary renditions," in which prisoners are sent to countries where torture is practiced; Bush's declaration that he is not bound to obey the prohibition of torture recently passed by Congress; and more.
The U.S. government has strongly denied such charges. But this week the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times report that the Pentagon is planning to omit the Geneva Convention's prohibition on "humiliating and degrading treatment" of prisoners from a new Army Field Manual on interrogation. The manual is intended for U.S. soldiers worldwide.
That prohibition is found in Article 3 of the Geneva Convention agreements. Article 3 prohibits "at any time and in any place whatsoever...violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture, [and] outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment."
Article 3 is part of the current U.S. Army Field Manual on Interrogation. The U.S. has been a signatory to the Geneva Convention pacts since 1949.
For decades, Article 3 has been part of the official policy of the U.S. military for treating all detainees, whether in declared or undeclared wars, civil wars, or peacekeeping activities.
This shifted only in 2002, when President Bush declared -- amidst great controversy -- that Article 3 did not apply to "war on terror" detainees.
The Los Angeles Times did not specify whether the Pentagon is seeking to omit the entire Article 3 passage cited above or just the prohibition against "humiliating and degrading treatment." But either way, the effect will be a de facto endorsement of prisoner mistreatment and torture.
Why make such a move? The Los Angeles Times quotes one source: "The overall thinking is that they need the flexibility to apply cruel techniques if military necessity requires it."
Ironically, President Bush recently declared that "the biggest mistake that's happened so far, at least from our country's involvement in Iraq, is Abu Ghraib. We've been paying for that for a long period of time."
Yet sanctioning "humiliating and degrading treatment" of prisoners is a sure way to bring on more Abu Ghraibs. And of course it can come back to haunt captured American soldiers and civilians.
On top of it all, it's difficult to imagine worse timing for such a move. Talk about bad public relations -- does the Administration want the entire world to hate and despise America?
As the Daytona News-Journal bluntly put it:
"If doubts remained in the rest of the world that the United States is engaged in routine torture of prisoners, the new Army Field Manual should dispel them."

Surprising Facts About Private Schools
Private schools are good for families, good for kids and good for America, according to the Council for American Private Education (CAPE), an organization that champions American private K-12 education.
But you may be surprised at just *how* beneficial and effective private schools are. According to CAPE:
* One in four U.S. schools is a private school.
* One child in nine attends a private school.
* Private schools produce an annual savings to taxpayers estimated at more than $48,000,000,000.
* Private school students perform better than their government school counterparts on standardized achievement tests.
* Ninety percent of private high school graduates attend college, compared to 66 percent of government high school graduates.
* Private school students from low socio-economic backgrounds are more than three times more likely than comparable government school students to attain a bachelor's degree by their mid-20s, meaning that private schools contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty for their students.
* Private schools are racially, ethnically, and economically diverse. Twenty- three percent of private school students are students of color; twenty-eight percent are from families with annual incomes under $50,000.
* Private secondary school students are nearly 50 percent more likely to take AP or IB courses in science and math than government school students.
* The participation of private school students in community service projects is significantly higher than their government school counterparts.
* Private school students feel safer in their schools, and *are* safer, than students in government schools.
* A study by the National Center for Education Statistics found that more than three-quarters of private school parents are "very satisfied" with their child's school, compared with less than half of parents whose children were assigned to a government school
.. and that's just the beginning, according to CAPE. (The statements above are fully documented at the organization's Web site, at the URL just below.)
No wonder, then, that -- to cite another CAPE statistic -- a substantial majority of adults believe private schools do a better job of providing a quality education than government schools. And that belief, in turn, is fueling increased demand among parents for alternatives to the government's education monopoly.

QUICK SHOTS...
* NEW LIBERTARIAN FILM "SCARIEST YOU'LL SEE THIS YEAR": Libertarian Aaron Russo's sizzling new documentary "America: Freedom to Fascism" received this rave review from CBS's Todd David Schwartz: "FOUR STARS (Highest Rating): The scariest goddamn film you'll see this year. It will leave you staggering out of the theatre, slack-jawed and trembling. Makes 'Fahrenheit 9/11' look like 'Bambi.' After watching this movie, your comfy, secure notions about America -- and about what it means to be an American -- will be forever shattered. Producer/director Aaron Russo and the folks at Cinema Libre Studio deserve to be heralded as heroes of a post-modern New American Revolution. This is shocking stuff. You'll be angry, you'll be disgusted, but you may actually break out in a cold sweat and feel a sickness deep in your gut; I would advise movie theatre managers to hand out vomit bags. You may end up needing one." You can learn more and see the trailer at: http://www.freedomtofascism.com/
* THAT BIG BASE IN IRAQ: "In an annual security conference on Saturday [June 3], Donald Rumsfeld assured the audience, 'We don't intend to occupy for any period of time. Our troops would like to go home and they will go home.' Why, then, would the United States be building an enormous embassy in Baghdad and a base so large it eclipses Kosovo's Camp Bondsteel, which had been the largest foreign U.S. military base built since Vietnam? The new embassy, which occupies a space two-thirds the area of the national mall in Washington DC, comprises 21 buildings that will house over 8,000 government officials. It has a huge pool, gym, theater, beauty salon, school, and six apartment buildings. The gargantuan military base, Camp Anaconda, occupies 15 square miles of Iraqi soil near Balad. The base is home to 20,000 soldiers and thousands of 'contractors' ... The aircraft runway at Anaconda is the second-busiest in the world, behind only Chicago's O'Hare airport. And, depending on which report you read, between six and fourteen more U.S. military bases are under construction in Iraq. It doesn't appear we'll be leaving anytime soon -- or anytime, really." -- Marjorie Cohn, Truthout. http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/060506J.shtml

PERSUASION POWER POINT #204
The Greatest Persuasion Advantage You Can Ever Get
by Michael Cloud
Gary Halbert is a legendary master of marketing. His marketing and sales campaigns have reaped hundreds of millions of dollars in profits for his clients. But he's more than a master marketer. He's a master teacher of marketing.
And he has a vital lesson for libertarians.
Once, while he was teaching a class on selling by mail, he asked his students, "If you and I each owned a hamburger stand and we were in a contest to see who could sell the most hamburgers, what one advantage would you want that would help you sell the most hamburgers?"
"The best-tasting hamburgers," said one student.
"Powerful advertising is the advantage I'd want," said another.
"Location, location, location," said a third.
"The lowest prices is the advantage I want," said another.
"Those are good answers," said Gary Halbert. "But I could give you every single one of them -- and take just one powerful advantage for myself -- and sell a lot more hamburgers than you."
"What's the one advantage you'd choose?" they asked.
"A starving crowd!" replied Mr. Halbert. "That's the key. You want large groups of people -- markets -- starving for what you're offering. People craving what you're offering."
Gary Halbert is right. About marketing goods and services. About marketing liberty.
We want people who have a burning desire for liberty. People with a gnawing hunger for small government.
Individuals starving for liberty will eagerly respond to the libertarian message.
You don't have to sell them on liberty. They desperately want to buy.
It seems obvious. Simple.
But how do you find a starving crowd for liberty?
How do you find people who desperately and urgently want freedom?
Would you like to learn several ingeniously simple ways to find the crowd of people who are aching and longing for freedom?
Because that's exactly what I'll show you in the next issue of the Liberator Online.
(To be continued next issue.)

ASK DR. RUWART
Dr. Mary Ruwart is a leading expert in libertarian communication. In this column she offers short answers to real questions about libertarianism. To submit questions to Dr. Ruwart, see end of column.
* * *
QUESTION: "In an economy without any 'trade barriers,' where the market can be flooded by less expensive imported goods at a price our domestic manufacturers cannot hope to compete with, what is going to stop domestic jobs from rapidly going overseas to cheap-labor countries?"
MY SHORT ANSWER: "Some jobs will indeed go overseas, but here we'll experience a net *gain* in the number of jobs and the wages we're paid. Everyone wins. Here's how it works.
"Let's assume that cheap-labor countries can manufacture and ship clothes to us more economically than our domestic industry. Our clothing bill goes down, leaving us more money to buy something else, say, computers. More high-tech, high-paying jobs are created here to meet the increased demand. We'll experience a net gain in jobs, because our human capital is more efficiently allocated. Uneducated cheap labor is manufacturing, and skilled technical labor is innovating.
"Of course, the domestic clothing workers will experience some trauma as they scramble to find new positions. Most will end up in jobs that are more interesting and demanding as our work force as a whole shifts to become more technical. Like the rest of the country, they will benefit from the lower clothing prices and the higher standard of living made possible by the more efficient division of labor.
"Countries that 'protect' inefficient industries with trade barriers keep consumer prices high and prosperity lower than it otherwise would be. In the U.S., for example, we pay more for automobiles than we would if tariffs on imports were abolished. Every extra dollar we spend on automobiles is one less for the computer and other domestic industries that compete well in the international markets. Tariffs put our market leaders at risk to preserve inefficiency. Ultimately, everyone -- even the automobile workers -- lose by higher prices and the lower standard of living."

SOUNDBITES FOR LIBERTY
WHO REALLY BENEFITS: "Politicians play cruel jokes on us. They talk of plans to bring peace to the world, when their real interest is in subsidizing military contractors. They speak of "empowering" minorities, when their real interest is in empowering the leaders of special-interest groups. They talk of helping the poor, but eagerly put them out of work with minimum wage laws. Whatever they proclaim publicly, there always seems to be someone in the background with extraordinary political influence who benefits far more than those the politicians claim to help." -- Harry Browne (1933-2006), Liberty A to Z: 872 Libertarian Soundbites You Can Use Right Now.
THREATS TO LIBERTY: "History teaches us that grave threats to liberty often come in times of urgency, when constitutional rights seem too extravagant to endure." --Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall (1989).
FREE OR NOT FREE: "If you are not free to choose wrongly and irresponsibly, you are not free at all." -- Jacob Hornberger, Future of Freedom Foundation (1995).

More than just a speech -- it gives you powerful new arguments to make liberty become desirable to the millions of people who have misunderstood our message for so many years.
Among the highlights:
* Why is personal responsibility the key to reclaiming liberty? * How does government really grow ... by seizing liberty or taking responsibility? * Responsibility and liberty: two sides of the same libertarian coin.
"One of the most important libertarian speeches I've ever heard," says Advocates President Sharon Harris. "The message is vital for libertarians and the public -- and Michael's delivery is superb. A must-hear."

* Do we need laws to restrain and prevent widespread sin, vice, wickedness, and depravity? * Do government regulations and restrictions against vice and sin make things better ... or worse? * Does liberty lead to license? ...Or does liberty nurture and reward virtue & goodness? * How and why liberty nurtures the sunlit side of human nature.
..and more!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Dear friends,
The Advocates' World's Smallest Political Quiz has recently received a flurry of media attention -- from newspapers, magazines, and television.
I'd like to share just a bit of it with you:
"The World's Smallest Political Quiz [is] my favorite part of the site. It can really tell you something about yourself." -- Columnist Joe Zorbino, The Daily Mississippian (University of Mississippi), June 22, 2004
"[An] irresistible political quiz. Find out why it's so popular." -- Channel 7 Television (NBC), San Diego, California, July 8, 2004
"If politics has been a bit heavy for you lately, why not lighten up with the World's Smallest Political Quiz.... Although it's American, the questions, all ten of them, are universal. Within seconds, you will be scored and know what your political philosophy is. It is refreshingly simple and quick." -- Kate Harrison, The Westmorland Gazette (UK), May 21, 2004
"We should educate ourselves and not rely solely on traditional media outlets for our information. For example... if you want to see where you fall on the political spectrum, take the world's smallest political quiz." -- Jamie Smith, Delta Business Journal (Mississippi), July 2004
"Since 1995, according to The Liberator [Online]... 3 million U.S. citizens have taken the 'World's Smallest Political Quiz.' Are you a Libertarian? Perhaps you should take the test." -- Steven Sisson, Augusta Free Press (Waynesboro, Virginia), July 21, 2004
Last issue I mentioned we'd recently had our 3,000,000th online Quiz taker. Those numbers keep rising by thousands each and every day. We are making a difference! Thanks to Advocates supporters for making this incredible, world-changing success possible.
We're working on some major updates and changes to the Quiz Web site, to make it better than ever. We'll announce them here first. Stay tuned!

Once again the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) -- an organization devoted to spreading libertarian ideas within the Republican Party -- had a major success with Operation Politically Homeless (OPH).
OPH is the Advocates outreach tool that, by using the Quiz and other material, transforms an ordinary political booth into a crowd-drawing, fun event.
The Southern Republican Leadership Conference was held in Miami Beach, Florida, April 15-17. At this biennial conference Republican leaders and activists meet to share ideas and develop strategies regionally and nationally. The event attracts hundreds of top GOP leaders and officeholders -- highly influential leaders and opinion-shapers.
The RLC was there with OPH. Ninety conference attendees took the Quiz, with nearly a third scoring in the Libertarian sector.
Jeff Palmer, Coordinator of the RLC of North Carolina, notes that "Several new people scoring in the very high Libertarian quadrant were identified, and new RLC memberships have already begun rolling in."
Jeff thanks RLC members Tami and Dave Bell, Philip Blumel, Frank Cuzzocrea, Jr., Sean Landon, Ed Rahn, Alan Turin, Tom Walls and Paul Yavis, who worked alongside him at the booth.
The Florida RLC's home page describes the Quiz and OPH as "staple outreach tool of the RLC."
Congratulations! Libertarians around the country are using OPH to open minds and spread the ideas of liberty. We invite you to share your OPH success stories with us.

PS: What would a libertarian society look like, feel like? Would it be a world of ruthless, dog-eat-dog competition, where only the fittest survive? Or... would it be something far different?
A few years ago I set out to explore that question in a speech. It proved extremely popular. Many people have told me it opened their minds to a side of libertarianism they'd never before considered -- the warm, compassionate side of liberty.
I've recorded an updated version of that speech on CD. It's reviewed in our Product Review department at the end of this issue. I hope you'll check it out. Thank you. _____________________________________ * * * * * paid advertisement * * * * *

Conservatives Leaders Say: Legalize Pot
Three important articles this month indicate the growing support among conservatives -- yes, conservatives -- for reform of marijuana laws, even outright legalization.
National Review is the world's leading conservative magazine, and it has -- surprisingly to many -- supported ending the War on Drugs since 1996. The June 29, 2004 cover story is "An End to Marijuana Prohibition: The Drive To Legalize Picks Up." Written by Ethan Nadelmann of the Drug Policy Alliance, the article begins:
"Never before have so many Americans supported decriminalizing and even legalizing marijuana.
"Seventy-two percent say that for simple marijuana possession, people should not be incarcerated but fined: the generally accepted definition of "decriminalization." Even more Americans support making marijuana legal for medical purposes.
"Support for broader legalization ranges between 25 and 42 percent, depending on how one asks the question.
"Two of every five Americans -- according to a 2003 Zogby poll -- say "the government should treat marijuana more or less the same way it treats alcohol: It should regulate it, control it, tax it, and only make it illegal for children."
Nadelmann's article goes on to make a powerful case for legalizing marijuana, and is well worth reading.
A few days later, William F. Buckley, arguably America's leading conservative spokesman, cited Nadelmann's arguments in his syndicated column (July 5), and called for legalizing marijuana (as he has in the past). Wrote Buckley:
"Conservatives pride themselves on resisting change, which is as it should be. But intelligent deference to tradition and stability can evolve into intellectual sloth and moral fanaticism, as when conservatives simply decline to look up from dogma because the effort to raise their heads and reconsider is too great…
"[A]lthough there is a perfectly respectable case against using marijuana, the penalties imposed on those who reject that case, or who give way to weakness of resolution, are very difficult to defend. If all our laws were paradigmatic, imagine what we would do to anyone caught lighting a cigarette, or drinking a beer. Or -- exulting in life in the paradigm -- committing adultery. Send them all to Guantanamo?
"Legal practices should be informed by realities. These are enlightening in the matter of marijuana. There are approximately 700,000 marijuana-related arrests made every year. Most of these -- 87 percent -- involve nothing more than mere possession of small amounts of marijuana."
Buckley goes on to note there is a growing movement for legalizing medical marijuana. "What is required is a genuine republican groundswell. It is happening, but ever so gradually."
Finally, The Republican, a Massachusetts daily newspaper, called for legalization of marijuana for medical reasons, and for easing penalties for personal use. The Republican wrote: "At the very least, Congress should amend the law to allow for the medical use of marijuana. Some lawmakers might fear that voters will think they are soft on drugs if they approve such a change. Such thinking, to borrow a phrase from the cult movie on the dangers of marijuana, is reefer madness."

Libertarian Party's Badnarik: Second Choice for 43% of Americans
If the presidential election were held today, three percent of Americans would vote for Libertarian candidate Michael Badnarik.
Surprisingly, though, Libertarian Badnarik is the *second* choice of more than four in 10.
So says a new nationwide poll conducted last week by the respected Rasmussen polling firm, commissioned by the Badnarik campaign.
The poll of 1,000 adults found that Democratic John Kerry leads incumbent president George W. Bush by a slim margin of 46-43%.
However, when asked to choose between Badnarik or their first choice's main rival, a whopping 43% of voters chose Badnarik. (In other words, roughly 40% of Bush voters would vote for Badnarik rather than Kerry, and roughly 40% of Kerry voters would choose Badnarik over Bush.)
This is remarkable in many ways. It shows that the Libertarian Party -- and libertarian ideas -- have gained a significant amount of public understanding and support over the years.
Indeed, that is further reflected by the survey's finding that fully 10% of Americans explicitly identified their political ideology as libertarian rather than conservative or liberal. This would have been almost unthinkable just a few years ago.
Badnarik says he is not surprised by the results. "The American electorate is extremely polarized this year," he said. "And the Libertarian Party arguably constitutes the new center of the debate."
Badnarik also emphasized the same point the Advocates' World's Smallest Political Quiz makes about the difference between liberals and conservatives.
"The Democrats and Republicans stand at two extremes, characterized by which parts of our lives they emphasize their desire to control," he said. "Libertarians reject both extremes in favor of the government leaving control of your life to you."
If Badnarik received 3% of the vote in November, that would be more than three times the largest showing ever by a Libertarian Party presidential candidate.
It's also important to note that Badnarik's 3% is enough to make him the difference between a victory or a loss for Kerry and Bush in many razor-close "battleground" states -- and perhaps even the deciding factor in the presidential race itself.
Badnarik campaign manager Fred Collins says this poll indicates that the Republican and Democratic politicians will be forced "to fight us for the swing votes that we control."
Finally, Rasmussen also discovered that the vast majority of Americans want Badnarik in the presidential debates. 68% said he should be included; 12% were unsure; and only 20% said he should be excluded.

The Difference Between a Slave and a Free Man
A growing number of liberals and conservatives alike are talking about the desirability of some form of military conscription or compulsory national service.
Award-winning veteran liberal columnist Nicholas von Hoffman recently responded to this with a column that got right to the heart of the matter:
"National service is a form of slavery, though some may argue that it’s really not since the conscriptees get paid, get college money, medical insurance and perhaps other bennies. But it’s not a wage which distinguishes a free person from a slave; slaves have often been paid in the past. The difference between a slave and a free man is that a free man is free -- free to work at whatever wages he can get, free not to work. He’s free to go, free to come, free to talk, free to be silent and free to refuse to serve."

Ronald Reagan on the Draft...
"[The draft] rests on the assumption that your kids belong to the state. If we buy that assumption then it is for the state -- not for parents, the community, the religious institutions or teachers -- to decide who shall have what values and who shall do what work, when, where and how in our society. That assumption isn't a new one. The Nazis thought it was a great idea." -- Ronald Reagan, Human Events, 1979.

ASK DR. RUWART
Dr. Mary Ruwart is a leading expert in libertarian communication. In this column she gives readers "short answers to the tough questions" that libertarians are frequently asked.
Dr. Ruwart's past Liberator Online answers are archived in searchable form at: http://www.TheAdvocates.org/ruwart/categories_list.php
* * *
Question:
"Would a libertarian society have speed limits?"
My short answer:
"In a fully libertarian world, roads would be owned and operated privately, not by the government. Road owners would decide what speed limits (if any) would be set. Some might have no restrictions, like the European Autobahn.Others might have strict limits.Since safe travel is important to drivers, owners would most likely monitor and ban reckless drivers (slow or fast) from their roadways. The marketplace would thereby impose "regulation" of its own, with emphasis on *safety* rather than *speed*."
* * *
Question:
"Since roads today are *not* privately owned, should we call for laws against drunk driving?"
My short answer:
"My personal belief is that these laws do more harm than good.Instead, I’d prefer to see reckless or careless drivers pulled off the road, whether they are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, sleep loss, medication, or emotions that distract them from safe driving. The libertarian philosophy permits defensive measures when force is threatened (e.g., you can defend yourself against me if I point a gun at you but haven’t fired yet). Reckless driving could qualify as the threat of force."

PERSUASION POWER POINT #167
(Note: As we prepared this issue Michael Cloud was out of the country, speaking in New Zealand at the International Society of Individual Liberty's annual convention. We're repeating one of our favorite Cloud columns, below. Michael will be back next issue with a new column.)
The Power of Positive Passion
by Michael Cloud
What do you love about liberty? Not just like. Take-your-breath-away, heart-pounding, LOVE about liberty?
Which dishes on the libertarian menu make your mouth water... turn you on... light up your soul... jazz you... make you want to dance 'til you drop?
Which libertarian ideas or proposals turn you on? Stimulate you? Excite you? Make you want to howl at the moon?
Which elements of libertarianism make you feel intensely alive? What parts of liberty make you feel like the jazzmen: "Gonna live forever, don't believe in death"?
That passion is your gift. That passion is your strength.
Barbara Goushaw radiates that positive passion when she speaks about "Handguns are a Girl's Best Friend." Her passion turbocharges her stories and evidence and proofs. She wins the hearts and minds of many skeptics and undecideds...while inspiring freedom's friends.
Marshall Fritz pulsates with high octane energy when he speaks on behalf of Separating School and State. His positive excitement flows through audiences...and readies them for a dramatically different direction for learning and education in America. Because of his positive passion, Marshall Fritz's facts and ideas and options fall on fertile ground.
Richard Rider glows with enthusiasm when he protects San Diego taxpayers against unneeded bond issues, bloated tax hikes, and squanderous government spending. His exuberance and sense of humor, his love of liberty and respect for hard-working Americans magnify and multiply his effectiveness. And make his ideas easy on the ears.
Positive passion opens the door... for our libertarian ideas and proposals.
Positive passion wins more converts than irrefutable arguments and unassailable logic.
Positive passion attracts positive libertarians. The Best and the Brightest. The Wise and the Kindest.
Positive passion is remembered long after libertarian information is forgotten.
Positive passion brings people back for more. More passion. More ideas. More information about Liberty.
Positive passion is the fuel that drives libertarian principles and information into the receptive recesses of your listener's mind.
Where do you get this positive passion? How do you crank it out?
1. Search your heart for the handful of libertarian issues that boosts your energy, makes your skin tingle, stimulates your eagerness and anticipation. Those are you touchstone issues. Those are the ones that will engage your curiosity. The issues that you will insatiably study and reflect on and talk about.
2. Express your excitement when you speak with others about these issues. Express your excitement FOR our libertarian solutions and alternatives. Let people see and hear and feel how positively charged you are about our libertarian remedies and recommendations.
Many years ago, a French Impressionist painter appeared at an exhibit of his own paintings.A society matron said, "I've never seen a sunset like that." "But don't you wish you could?" he responded. His energy and passion and vision made his art irresistible. As will ours.
3. Stop driving with the brakes on. Stop holding back emotionally. Express your passions. Share you enthusiasms. Celebrate your loves and admirations.
* * *
A lot of us need a little help in recovering our emotional expressiveness.
May I suggest a few books that really helped me?
"How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success in Selling" by Frank Bettger. (The first chapter -- all 7 pages -- will show you how to ignite your excitement.)
"Enthusiasm Makes the Difference" by Norman Vincent Peale.
"Zen and the Art of Writing" by Ray Bradbury. (This will awaken your zest -- and liberate the passionate speaker and writer in you.)
Positive passion let Cobden and Bright free England of protectionist laws that were impoverishing working people.
Positive passion gave Patrick Henry the strength to stir the souls of American patriots -- and win our independence from Britain.
Positive passion gives you and me hope and belief that liberty is American's destiny.
Positive passion and liberty will triumph.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Sharon Harris's acclaimed speech now on CD!
"The Invisible Hand is a Gentle Hand," by Sharon Harris. CD, 39 minutes. Published by the Advocates for Self-Government, 2004.
What would it be like to live in a libertarian world?
Would it be a world of ruthless, dog-eat-dog competition? Survival of the fittest? Or… would it be something far different?
Sharon Harris, president of the Advocates for Self-Government, answers those questions and more in this compelling, acclaimed speech.
Sharon explores a too-often neglected aspect of liberty -- its compassionate and benevolent side. She firmly dispels the myth of "benevolent" government, and gently makes the case that only freedom can give people what they want: a tolerant, humane, and abundant society. Along the way, she also...
* Contrasts the invisible hand of freedom with the "visible fist" of government.
* Dispels the "dog-eat-dog" myth of ruthless free-market competition.
* Exposes the government's war against desperately ill Americans.
* Defends the right to keep and bear arms as a way to create a more peaceful and secure society.
* Explains why freedom fosters a more cooperative, compassionate, generous world.
* Shows why asset forfeiture is "robbery with a badge."
* Makes the case against a military draft and senseless foreign wars.
* Demonstrates how privatizing Social Security could make most Americans -- even the working poor -- wealthy in a generation.
* Explains why libertarians can't be "too consistent."
* And... reveals why history is on our side.
"The Invisible Hand Is a Gentle Hand" is a wide-ranging, persuasive look at the real-world benefits of liberty. It will show you why the cause of liberty is the best hope for mankind.
It will encourage you to envision a better world -- and inspire you to make that world happen. It's also a perfect speech to share with non-libertarian friends.
"The Invisible Hand Is a Gentle Hand" is published and distributed exclusively by the Advocates for Self-Government.

PRESIDENT?S CORNER
Dear friends,
They call it the "blogosphere" -- that vast, loosely interconnected web of online journals in which people post their thoughts, observations, hopes, and dreams for the world to see.
In these blogs (short for "web log"), ordinary folks pontificate about politics, careers, romance, pop culture, and the minutia of daily life for a readership that ranges from a few dozen to tens of thousands. Readers are invited to post comments, which adds an appealing interactive element.
How many blogs are there? No one knows for sure, but the number could range into the millions. What is certain is that blogs are increasingly influential; at the 2004 Democratic national convention, several popular bloggers were awarded press credentials.
What is also certain is that one of the most popular topics of discussion among bloggers is ... the World's Smallest Political Quiz. That's right; a recent online survey, conducted by our Director of Communications Bill Winter, has uncovered hundreds of blog entries debating, analyzing, attacking, and praising the Quiz.
These blogs are fascinating because they represent the uncensored opinions of the general public. Sure, we've seen lots of comments about the Quiz from political scientists and journalists. (Which you can read at http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz-quotes.html.) However, only blogs give us a sense of what the "average" person thinks about the Quiz.
Here's the good news: Most bloggers enjoyed the Quiz, and thought it provided a valid and insightful way of looking at politics. And they weren't shy about saying so. Here are some of our favorite (and spiciest!) blog comments about the Quiz:
* "Holy crap, a Web quiz that's actually insightful. How is this possible?" -- Michael Tracz, Traxland.com
* "It's shockingly accurate and gives you a good idea about your political leanings. I plotted exactly where I thought I would." -- Erin McFox, Erin's McLife Blog
* "If you have not taken The World's Smallest Political Quiz I highly recommend it, you may learn something about yourself and your notions of politics." -- Don, Little Boring Blog
* "Cool link of the day: The World's Smallest Political Quiz!!! It's great." -- Katy L, Incugirl Blog
* "The World's Smallest Political Quiz is the best of them all." -- Toby, Bilious Young Fogey Blog
* "It is, quite simply, enlightening." -- David Mooney & Bonnie Reynolds, dmooney.org
* "If you're either bored, or still trying to make sense of the upcoming 2004 political scene, you should get ready by taking the World's Smallest Political Quiz. It's great fun at parties too!" -- Jason L. Buberel, Jason's Blog
* "The analysis is far more useful than the usual 'left and right' way of seeing things." -- David Farrer, Freedom and Whisky Blog
* "Will give you a good idea of where you stand on political issues." -- Rocco Castoro, Blog Jammer Blog
* "I highly suggest everyone take this to find out where you REALLY stand." -- ConVox, ConVox Blog
* "It is actually quite clever in its ability to give you a fairly accurate picture of where you fit." -- Argee, Thrawn Rickle Blog
* "I like this map of the political spectrum. This diamond thingy makes much more sense to me than the Left-Right spectrum in common use." -- Jason, Lost in the Sun Blog
Okay, we've never referred to the "Diamond Chart" as "this diamond thingy" -- but we'll take the compliment!
Of course, not every blogger liked the Quiz. Some found it too short. (Apparently, they thought we were kidding when we called it the World's *Smallest* Political Quiz!) Some were mad they didn't score where they thought they should. And some were convinced it was biased. However, for every blogger who complained that the Quiz was inaccurate, there seemed to be 10 who said it pegged them perfectly. We'll let them speak for themselves...
* "I ended up as a Left-Liberal, which is certainly correct." -- Michael Rawdon, Gazing Into the Abyss Blog
* "I scored as a political centrist... This corresponds to my political views quite well." -- Andis, OfficialPundit Blog

Sorry, Little Orange Fox. You don't win anything for taking the Quiz -- other than the satisfaction of verifying where you stand on the political spectrum. (Thank goodness a guy who runs a blog called "RightRants" scored conservative!)
As for us, the "prize" we won in our survey of bloggers was a better appreciation of the important role the Quiz plays in explaining political labels, confirming people's political identities, and sparking thoughtful, lively online discussion in the blogosphere.
For all the bloggers who took the time to comment on the Quiz, we say "thank you." Blog on!

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS, UNBELIEVABLE NEWS
by James W. Harris
Was This Politician A "Traitor"?
The pro-gun rights Web site KeepAndBearArms.com regularly polls site visitors about gun-related matters. In early June they asked this question, which over 2,000 visitors voted on:
"What do you think of this politician?
"(1) He supported a seven-day waiting period for handgun purchases. (2) He called the Brady Bill "just plain common sense." (3) He said "I support the Brady Bill and I urge the Congress to enact it without further delay." (4) He endorsed the federal government mandating "local law enforcement officials to conduct background checks on those who wish to buy a handgun." (5) He signed into law an edict "prohibiting the carrying of firearms on one's person or in a vehicle, in any public place or on any public street." (6) He executed an "administrative ban" on importation of shotguns that can hold more than 10 rounds, which later became codified into law."
Voters chose from four possible answers. The results:
* "He's a traitor usurping power at the expense of our rights." -- 75.3%
* "He's misguided -- such laws only harass the law-abiding." -- 20.4%
* "He's correct -- we need laws like these." -- 2.3%
* "He's the best politician in my lifetime." -- 2.0%.
Such responses weren't surprising, given that most visitors to the site are strong defenders of the right to keep and bear arms.
What was surprising to many, however, was the *name* of the politician, which KeepAndBearArms.com revealed a few days after the poll.
The man that 75.3% called a "traitor" and 20.4% more said was "misguided" based on his gun views was... President Ronald Reagan.
KeepAndBearArms.com explained the reason for the poll in an editorial. An excerpt:
"It was not our intention to offend anyone. We realize the options presented in our poll were strongly worded -- and that was intentional: only by having gun owners characterize the *actions* of an anonymous subject could their true assessment be determined.
"The strongest weapon we have in the fight to reclaim the free exercise of our right to keep and bear arms is the truth. When confronted with painful truth, we have two choices: accept it, or deny it and resent the messenger."
That's an important point to remember -- made in a powerful way.

Can Government Give Your Home To Private Corporations?
Can local governments take your home or small business -- using the power of "eminent domain" -- and give it to private corporations?
The short answer is: in some states, yes. In others, no. And in still others, maybe.
However, this may soon change dramatically -- one way or the other.
In the next few weeks the Supreme Court will decide whether to hear its first-ever case examining whether government?s eminent domain power may be used *not* for a "public use" (such as for a road) or even for a "public purpose? (such as for blight clearance), but for sheer corporate welfare:to take one person?s home or small business so a bigger business can make more money off that land (and pay higher taxes to the local government).
The case comes from New London, Conn., where 15 perfectly fine (non-blighted) homes are being threatened with eminent domain to make way for a private development project that promises to bring in jobs and collect more taxes for the city. The proposed development that has destroyed a middle-class neighborhood includes such items as a luxury hotel, high-end condos and private office space.
This is hardly exceptional. Nationwide, more than 10,000 examples of threatened or actual eminent domain abuse have been documented in 41 states in just a five-year period from 1998 to 2002.
State supreme courts are divided on whether this kind of theft-by-eminent-domain is legal. Fifteen state supreme courts have ruled on the issue of private-to-private eminent domain. Eight say it should not be allowed; seven say it's fine and dandy.
Scott Bullock, a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, a renowned libertarian civil liberties organization which is representing the New London homeowners for free, said: ?This is corporate welfare at its worst. America?s founders would be shocked to see this awesome power of government abused in this way.?
Dana Berliner, an Institute for Justice senior attorney who litigates this issue and authored the first-ever national study on eminent domain abuse, summed it up: ?The bottom line is this: homeowners and small businesses will not be safe until the High Court issues a clear ruling that will end eminent domain abuse once and for all. The New London case offers the first opportunity to do that.?

Alaska Supreme Court: Constitution Protects Adult Pot Use
Despite tremendous pressure from Drug War supporters, the Alaska Supreme Court last week upheld a September 2003 Court of Appeals finding that the possession and use of up to four ounces of marijuana by adults within the home is protected by the Alaska constitution's defense of citizen privacy.
In response, angry drug warriors are preparing to ask the Alaska state legislature to amend the Alaska constitution to remove protection for marijuana use.
But anti-prohibition forces are moving forward -- in a big way. The November Alaska ballot will feature a bold initiative to remove *all* criminal and civil penalties on the use, possession, cultivation, or distribution of marijuana by adults over 21. The state legislature specifically would be called upon to regulate marijuana like alcohol.
If this initiative succeeds, it will be, according to Rob Kampia of the Marijuana Policy Project, "the first of its kind in the world. Even Holland has penalties for marijuana, although they are rarely enforced."
A 2003 Zogby poll found that 41% of Americans agreed with the statement that "the government should treat marijuana more or less the same way it treats alcohol: it should regulate it, control it, tax it and only make it illegal for children."

Quotable: William F. Buckley on Marijuana
"It is outrageous to live in a society whose laws tolerate sending young people to life in prison because they grew, or distributed, a dozen ounces of marijuana. I would hope that the good offices of your vital profession would mobilize at least to protest such excesses of wartime zeal, the legal equivalent of a My Lai massacre. And perhaps proceed to recommend the legalization of the sale of most drugs, except to minors."

Libertarianism and Abortion
Question:
"I am troubled by the issue of abortion. I'm all for contraception, but I just can't condone killing a living being once it is conceived. I don't understand how some libertarians justify abortion. Why does the mother's want or need to not have a child supercede the child's right to be born and live?"
My short answer:
"Like liberals, conservatives and others, libertarians disagree among themselves on this very difficult issue. Libertarians have a wide spectrum of beliefs about abortion. For example, many libertarians share your views and are ?pro-life,? but some of them feel that outlawing abortion will only aggravate the problem by driving it underground.
?Alternately, some "pro-choice" libertarians say that a woman's giving a fetus a chance at life by sharing her body is a gift. By giving this gift initially, a woman does not obligate herself to continue giving it, even though the fetus cannot survive on its own.
"I personally believe that the abortion issue is best resolved by making it obsolete. Instead of spending time, money, and effort on legislating abortion, we should funnel these resources into research that allows an unwanted fetus to be transferred to another womb, whether natural or artificial. Adoptive parents would gladly pay for such a procedure in order to have a child. Naturally, a libertarian society would have greater wealth to develop such procedures, and a legal system that facilitated such adoptions.
"With such an option available, physicians would stop performing abortions in favor of transfers. Women would have choice and the newly conceived would have life. That?s the kind of win-win solutions that liberty facilitates!"
[Editor's note: As Mary notes, libertarians disagree on this tough issue. Here are some resources for learning more.

Libertarian and soldier -- a contradiction?
Question:
"Do you see a contradiction between being a libertarian and being in the military?"
My short answer:
"Not at all! In a libertarian society, we would still need defense. Unlike today, our military wouldn't be funded through taxation and would only be deployed to prevent or respond to domestic attack. Policing the world wouldn't be a national imperative.

PERSUASION POWER POINT #167
The Philosophy of the Hammer
by Michael Cloud
Many years ago, in a place far away, a simpleton found a hammer.
He soon learned that the hammer let him easily and quickly pound, smash, and flatten just about anything within arm's reach.
The simpleton felt an enormous pride of discovery and possession toward his hammer.
So he took it to his tribe. He showed them the power and uses of his hammer. And, lo, they came to respect and value the hammer.
Over time, they found many uses for the hammer. They made copies. They improved it. They made sledgehammers and small, precision hammers.
They developed the Philosophy of the Hammer. (Some called it a religion.) The Philosophy decreed that the hammer was the First Tool. The Source of all lesser tools: the wedge, the saw, the axe, the pick, and all others.
"The Hammer creates, the hammer destroys. The hammer builds up, the hammer knocks down," said the writings.
"The hammer is the Alpha and Omega of all making and breaking," said the text. "Everything can and must be pounded. Hit it harder. Hit it longer. Keep hitting it until it does your bidding."
The Philosophy and Practice of the Hammer served them well for many years. But that was as far as they developed. To the limits of the hammer.
Other peoples, with more complete tool kits, with greater skills and flexibility in their choice of tools, surpassed the tribe.
These others built great cities and civilizations. And left the tribe behind.
They had learned that each tool is good for some things but not for others. That different tasks require different tools. That no tool is supreme or dominant or perfect. That each tool has its own unique limits and possibilities. That new and different tools give us new and different possibilities.
Sometimes libertarians miss this lesson. Especially in our conversations.
One libertarian's hammer might be the Constitution. How and why and where the Constitution -- "if only we understood it" -- would restore freedom.
Another libertarian's hammer might be the "Non-Aggression Axiom: no one may initiate or threaten to initiate the use of force." Everyone, everywhere must pounded with this hammer until they agree.
One libertarian's hammer could be Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. "People must read and embrace Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism to fully grasp the nature, role and value of freedom" for our cause to triumph.
Another's might be Austrian economics. "Until people read Human Action by Ludwig von Mises, or Man, Economy, and State by Murray Rothbard, they'll never grasp the logic of free markets and liberty."
Each hammer above can build a path to liberty that will appeal to some. And not appeal to others.
None will build the supreme, perfect, or only path to liberty.
If you have a hammer -- a dominant tool -- for political conversations, that's fine. But don't limit yourself to your hammer. Don't let the hammer limit you. Don't let it shut down and block off different possibilities for reaching the hearts and minds of those you speak with. Familiarize yourself with and practice using other tools, other approaches for political and economic discussions.
A good workman has a full tool kit. And uses the tool best suited for each task. Not the tool he likes best.
A bright libertarian does the same. He doesn't limit himself to his hammer.

I hope it spreads -- and sells -- widely among the people who are, often helplessly, attempting to spread the message of freedom."
* "Minimum Wage, Maximum Damage" by Jim Cox. This is a hot issue! Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry has pledged to raise the minimum wage. In this acclaimed and compelling speech, Advocates President Sharon Harris explores a too-often neglected aspect of liberty -- its compassionate and benevolent side. She firmly dispels the myth of "benevolent" government, and makes the case that only freedom can give people what they want: a tolerant, humane, and abundant society. Great listening -- and a great gift for your non-libertarian friends who want to know what a truly free society would be like.
* "Maybe We Would Be Amazed" by Carla Howell. 60-page 4-color booklet and inspiring song on CD. Leading libertarian spokesperson and song writer Carla Howell has put together a gorgeous package which makes an inspiring case for getting children out of government schools. A mother of a 14-year old in public school said, "My daughter's been begging me to let her go to a different school. In the Guild System, you can't edit the first post of threads that have a poll attached. Which means you can't sticky them. A bad glitch, but one they can't seem to fix.
Which means you'll have to create another "Liberator" thread, without a poll.

I thought I might try posting the Texas LP newsletter here, maybe other people could share your own state's LP newsletter (if any) or other publications you may find interesting. Quote: Lone Star Liberty Online August 18, 2005 1. National LP's Iraq Exit Strategy "illegitimate." 2. LNC Votes for No Dues 3. Around the State: Activist Update 1. National LP Iraq Exit Strategy "illegitimate." The National LP paper titled an Iraq Exit Strategy promoted to the media and published on the Party's website June 29, 2005 is "illegitimate, unsupported, and devoid of force or effect," said the Travis County LP in a resolution passed August 2 according to Executive Director Wes Benedict. Williamson County also issued a statement of "non-support" for the plan. Chair Bryan Bracamonte said the Iraq Exit Strategy was "beyond our tolerance." The plan created by LP headquarters staff outlines a strategy for a slow pull-out of troops from Iraq, the reallocation of 30,000 troops to other middle eastern countries, and providing aid to the Iraq government. The website at www.lp.org/plan has a page soliciting signers to the plan. At press time 1,984 individuals had signed in support. The plan drew immediate criticism from party members as a violation of the Libertarian philosophy of non-intervention. The Williamson County LP's statement also argued that the plan was in conflict with our Platform position on Foreign Aid. They asked that the plan be reviewed by the LNC and rewritten in keeping with our principles. 2. LNC Votes for No Dues The Libertarian National Committee voted in favor of a proposal restructuring the relationship with the state affiliates, reducing dues to zero and abolishing the Unified Membership Program (UMP) at the August 6-7 meeting in Kansas City. The Libertarian Party of Texas had passed a resolution June 11 instructing our LNC region representative that any proposal to eliminate dues be submitted to the National Convention and not be decided by the LNC. However, our member on the committee-- Southwest Region Representative George Squyres-- was the drafter of the proposal and aside from his personal support for the plan he reported that he would vote yes unless the region as a whole directed him to vote against. The Southwest Region is made up of the parties in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The proposal sets National Party dues at zero starting January 2006. It ends the UMP program effective September 30, 2005 and allows member states to choose either six months of full UMP payouts or a year's worth of payouts cut 1/12 each month. It calls for a National program of state affiliate support and the creation of a new affiliate agreement. 3. Around the State: Activist Update LP of Texas Executive Director Wes Benedict reports that 3,944 letters were sent to our mailing list on August 8. The letters had a three-fold purpose: to locate potential candidates, to let activists know about our upcoming campaign training weekend, and to raise the money we need "for recruiting candidates, training candidates, and supporting candidates." If you didn't get a letter and are interested in running for office or supporting this effort contact Wes at Director@lptexas.org. Former LP Presidential candidate Michael Badnarik has announced that he is seeking to become the US Representative for District 10 in 2006. Michael's website at www.badnarik.org is online to promote this race and signs and bumperstickers are being designed. The campaign expects to move into its headquarters this weekend and will host an Ice Cream Social and Grand Opening on Sunday, September 18 just following our Weekend for Winners events. Mike's announcement was covered in the August 9 issue of Free Market News, which pointed out that 30 percent of the 10th District was once in Congressman Ron Paul's district. Drew Parks of Houston has announced that he will file for US Representative District 7, a race he has entered every cycle since 1998. Yon Cole at Southern Methodist University in Dallas has announced the forming of a college Libertarian group at the school. Yon can be contacted at yon@yon.com or 214-363-0676. Marie Angell of Houston had a letter in the August 12 Houston Chronicle about the raiding by the Texas Legislature of a fund set aside for providing electricity discounts to the poor. Marie argued that this was proof that you can't trust government. Wes Benedict of Travis County issued a press release August 12 publisizing the Texas Ethics Commission fining the Austin Police Association PAC for illegal reporting related to its support of Austin City Council candidates in the May 2005 election. The Association was hit with a fine of $100 and $500. The fines resulted form complaints filed by Wes, who ran in that election. The State Libertarian Executive Committee will meet Saturday, August 27 in Stafford. The main business of the meeting will be goal setting for 2006. However, motions are expected on the topic of supporting the Fair Tax and to issues related to the ending of the Unified Membership Program. The meeting is open to the public and there are vacancies on the committee for those interested in participating. See our website at www.lptexas.org to see if there is a vacancy in your district or to find your representatives.

WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE ADVOCATES
* College Libertarians find success with OPH: All across America, college libertarians are using Operation Politically Homeless (OPH) to discover libertarian-leaning students, introduce them to libertarianism, and invite them to join up! One recent example: Boise State's Students for Liberty received attention in that college's newspaper for their OPH. Here's an excerpt:
"Students for Liberty has also provided some numbers from a poll [OPH] they conducted during the recent Organizational Fair on the Quad. According to their poll, out of 76 respondents, 34 percent were centrist (moderate), 26 percent libertarian, 25 percent liberal, 9 percent conservative, and 5 percent were authoritarian." The article also gave a link for the online World's Smallest Political Quiz. Way to go, guys!

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS, UNBELIEVABLE NEWS

FBI: Marijuana Arrests Reach Shameful New Record
The War Against Marijuana is at all-time high.
Police arrested an estimated 771,608 persons for marijuana violations in 2004, according to the FBI's annual Uniform Crime Report, released October 17.
That total is the highest ever recorded -- a shameful new record.
And a closer look at this figure reveals some startling facts about the Drug War.
* There is, on average, one marijuana arrest every 41 seconds.
* Since 1993, marijuana arrests have more than doubled.
* The number of marijuana arrests far exceeded the total number of arrests in the U.S. for *all violent crimes combined*, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
* Marijuana arrests account for 44.2 percent of all drug arrests in the United States. (Clearly, the War on Drugs is first and foremost a war on casual marijuana use.)
* Of those arrested, 89 percent -- some 684,319 Americans -- were charged with *possession only*.
* The remaining 11 percent were charged with "sale/manufacture," a category that includes *all* cultivation offenses -- even those where the marijuana was being grown for personal or medical use.
* Over 8 million Americans have been arrested on marijuana charges in the past decade -- a far greater number than the entire populations of Alaska, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming... combined.
"It's important to remember that each of these statistics represents a human being, and in many cases, a preventable tragedy," said Aaron Houston, director of government relations for the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. "One of those marijuana arrests in 2004 was Jonathan Magbie, a quadriplegic medical marijuana patient who died in the Washington, D.C., city jail while serving a 10-day sentence for marijuana possession."
"These numbers belie the myth that police do not target and arrest minor marijuana offenders," said Allen St. Pierre, Executive Director of NORML. "This effort is a tremendous waste of criminal justice resources that diverts law enforcement personnel away from focusing on serious and violent crime, including the war on terrorism."

White House: Forcibly Extract DNA of Innocent Americans
The White House has announced it supports the "DNA Fingerprint Act," a proposed new law that would permit the government to collect and maintain a database of DNA samples of individuals who are arrested or just detained by federal authorities -- even if they are not convicted, or even charged with a crime.
This latest Big Brother-type proposal was authored by senators Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and John Cornyn (R-TX) and introduced Sept. 29 as an amendment to the Violence Against Women Act (S. 1197). It was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee by voice vote.
The measure was quickly denounced by civil liberties group across the political spectrum, from the libertarian Cato Institute to the liberal ACLU. All are urging that -- despite White House support -- the DNA provision be eliminated from the bill before it goes to the full Senate.
Currently the FBI maintains a DNA database limited by law to persons convicted of a crime. The new bill would dramatically expand that.
Those arrested and detained, but not ultimately convicted, would have to petition the government to have the information removed from the database.
Civil libertarians have long warned that the government would attempt to expand the DNA database to include persons not convicted of crimes, or even, eventually, the entire population. This latest move indicates those warnings were right on the money.

Polls: Majority of Americans now say "Iraq war was wrong"
For the first time, a Wall Street Journal poll has found that a majority of Americans believe the Iraq war was the "wrong thing to do."
The poll was conducted October 11-17 and published Tuesday, October 25.
53 percent felt that "taking military action against Iraq was the ... wrong thing to do."
Only 34 percent said they thought the war was the right thing to do.
Just a year ago, the same poll found both sides on the question even, at 43 percent.
The poll results were announced as the U.S. troop death toll hit 2,000.
Other results:
* 66 percent of Americans believe President George Bush is doing a "poor" or "only fair" job of handling Iraq, compared to only 32 percent who said "excellent" or "pretty good".
* 44 percent of those polled said the situation for U.S. troops in Iraq is getting worse, compared to only 19 percent who said it is improving.
* 61 percent were not confident U.S. policies in Iraq would succeed.
And then there's this shocker. Another poll -- secretly commissioned by Britain's Ministry of Defense -- stunned Americans and Britons when results were published last week in Britain's Sunday Telegraph.
According to the poll:
* 82 percent of Iraqis "strongly opposed" the presence of coalition troops in their country and 67 percent felt less secure because of the U.S.-led occupation.
* 43 percent of Iraqis believe attacks against American and British troops are justified. That number rises to an amazing 65 percent in the U.S./British-controlled Maysan province.
* Less than 1 percent of Iraqis believe U.S.-led coalition forces have improved security in Iraq.

Lessons of Vietnam...
"Vietnam presumably taught us that the United States could not serve as the world's policeman; it should also have taught us the dangers of trying to be the world's midwife to democracy when the birth is scheduled to take place under conditions of guerrilla war."
-- Jeane Kirkpatrick, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the Reagan administration, 1979.

PERSUASION POWER POINT # 190
Are You Forgetting This Crucial Element In Your Libertarian Conversations?
by Michael Cloud
Most libertarian scholars forget this crucial element.
Most libertarian writers leave out this key factor.
So do most libertarian candidates.
Probably you do, too.
We don't overlook it once or twice. We do it regularly. Repeatedly.
What are we forgetting, neglecting, and leaving out of our libertarian conversations? Why does it matter?
Benefits. We're forgetting to tell people the *benefits* of our libertarian proposals. The specific, concrete, direct benefits to them. The benefits to their families, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. How it will make them healthier, happier, safer, more successful, or better off financially.
Why does it matter? Because benefits sell the libertarian proposal. Benefits persuade. Without clear and concrete benefits, your listener will be unconvinced and unmoved.
You're probably pretty good at showing people the costs and consequences of a government program. Of government-run public schools. Of Social Security. Of welfare.
That's a great beginning. Keep doing it.
Then you offer a libertarian solution. Separation of school and state. 100% total privatization of savings for retirement. Private charities.
This is where most libertarians stop. Just a few steps short of moving and persuading.
We forget to tell people the concrete, specific, direct benefits of our libertarian proposal. And we don't win them over.
It's not enough to *know* the benefits. We must remember to *tell* them the benefits.
Would you like a simple and effective way to remember to talk about the benefits?
After you explain your libertarian proposal, say these words:
"And here's what that means to you..." [followed by 3 to 5 specific benefits]
OR: "And here's how this benefits you, your family, and neighbors. You get..." [followed by 3 to 5 specific benefits]
OR: "And here's how this makes your life better. It gives you these benefits..." [followed by 3 to 5 specific benefits]
Your listeners' eyes will light up. They'll lean forward. They'll be more receptive and responsive. Positive and lively.
Isn't that the response you want? Isn't that the kind of libertarian conversation you'd love?
I've tested this. It works.
Don't take my word for it. Try it for a week with your family, friends, and co-workers. See what happens. Savor the experience.
What that would mean to you? How would that benefit you -- and everyone you talk with?

What can libertarians in local government do to promote liberty?
Question:
"What guidance is there for a libertarian working in the real world of local government? How would a libertarian official bring economic development to the community (i.e. entrepreneurship programs, business retention and expansion, incentives) without relying on government funding? How would he or she deal with the inevitable demands for new regulations?"
My short answer:
"Lowering taxes and deregulation consistently stimulate economic development in cities, states, and nations. Government funding, on the other hand, is ineffective at best, and detrimental at worst.
"Indeed, the research supporting the above statements is so strong that even traditionally statist organizations, such as the World Bank, are beginning to promote liberty, rather than aid, as a means of economic development. (For more details, see the 2003 edition of my book, Healing Our World, available through the Advocates.)
"Regulations are usually "demanded" because of the belief they will make things safer or better. However, a great deal of research show that they almost inevitably make things worse. With this information at your fingertips, you can make the case that regulation isn't in the public interest. You'll likely find that your opponents have nothing but blind faith to back their positions. The end result will be more freedom-friendly than it would be without your input!
"The Reason Foundation (www.reason.org) is a good source for local issues. "Healing Our World" details the fallacies of minimum/living wages, licensing laws, etc.
"The research is there. Libertarians in local government are needed to put it into real-world action. Good luck with your efforts!"

Should Americans be able to support military and political conflicts abroad?
Question:
"You recently said that, in a libertarian America, citizens would be free to volunteer their money, time, and even military service to either side of a foreign conflict.
"This seems unworkable. It would encourage the creation of thousands of foreign IRA- and bin Laden-style terrorist groups, and this in turn would have the same effect as our tax dollars in the bin Laden case -- encouraging terrorism and hatred against Americans.
"If this had been U.S. policy in World War II, the American Nazi Party and the KKK would have supported Hitler and other tyrants and the war would have been lost both at home and abroad. Don't we need a system of vetting mercenary activities, even in a libertarian nation?
My short answer:
"Even in a libertarian nation, some individuals might support aggressors; however, such support would be much less than it has historically been.
"For example, few Americans, especially in a libertarian United States, would have voluntarily contributed to Stalin's rise to power. However, virtually every U.S. taxpayer supported Stalin through loans and foreign aid extended through the United States government.
"Similarly, contributions to the American Nazi Party from a libertarian United States would pale in comparison to what Hitler actually received from the West.
"People pull money out of their own pockets only to support something they truly believe in. In a free society, few people could be tricked into supporting dictators. In today's society, people cannot withdraw their tax dollars from their government's disastrous foreign policy without great risk. Many people, even today, would withdraw their support if the consequences to themselves were not so severe."

HARRY BROWNE'S SOUNDBITES FOR LIBERTY
During his two Libertarian Party presidential campaigns (1996 and 2000), Harry Browne created hundreds of "soundbites" -- short, pithy, and highly memorable answers to the questions libertarians are most frequently asked by the media and the public. In each issue we'll be sharing some of the best. Enjoy -- and put them to use for liberty!
* * * * * * * * * * * *
* Victimless crime laws: "Labeling as crimes acts in which there are no victims inevitably leads to police-state tactics. Since there is no one to testify that he has been harmed, the police must enforce the law by using sting operations, informers, wire-taps, snooping into your bank account, and other tactics that are an affront to a free society."
* Liberty, security, and the government: "It is said that Americans prefer security to liberty. But what security has government given you? A retirement system that two-thirds of Americans believe won't be there for you when you retire? Cities that are so dangerous you can't walk the streets at night? A foreign policy that repeatedly puts you at risk by forcing your nose into other countries' business?"
* The problem with supply-side economics: "Supply-side economics claims that a small tax cut will expand the economy, producing more revenue for the government. But we don't *want* the government to have more revenue! Government is too big already. We want tax cuts and spending cuts that reduce the size of government -- not allow it to grow further."
* * * * * * * * * * * Harry Browne was 1996 and 2000 Libertarian Party presidential candidate. He is the author of a dozen books that have sold over two million copies, including three New York Times bestsellers.
Browne's newest book "Liberty A to Z: 872 Libertarian Soundbites You Can Use Right Now" is a treasury of soundbites like those in this column. You can get it from the Advocates: http://www.TheAdvocates.org/liberty-a-z.html _____________________________________
PRODUCT REVIEW
FIRST TIME AVAILABLE: Newly-Revised Ninth Edition of the classic Libertarianism In One Lesson by David Bergland. $12.50. 2005 edition, 192 pages, trade-size paperback, published by the Advocates for Self-Government.
PLUS: Order now and get FREE bonus gift! Details below.
* * *
The best introductory book about libertarianism has just gotten better!
The brand-new Ninth Edition of David Bergland's acclaimed Libertarianism In One Lesson has been comprehensively updated and completely rewritten for 2005. It's as current as today's headlines, and tackles terrorism, the war in Iraq, Social Security reform, and even the ongoing debate about medical marijuana.
If you're a newcomer to libertarianism -- or just curious -- this book will answer every question you have (in just 192 pages!).
If you're already a libertarian, this book is an inspiring reminder of the beauty and power of libertarian ideas.
And if you have a friend who's interested in the freedom philosophy, this trade-size paperback, with a stunning full-color cover, makes a great gift.
With insight and candor, Libertarianism In One Lesson answers all the common questions about the freedom philosophy: What exactly is libertarianism? What are its historic roots? Are libertarians conservative or liberal -- or something else entirely? What would libertarians do to solve America's most vexing problems? And does libertarianism work in the "real world"?
The book lays out the central premise of libertarianism -- "You own yourself" -- and reveals how that deceptively simple statement has a wide-ranging impact on the relationship between government and individuals.
Libertarianism In One Lesson sparkles with provocative proposals, insightful analysis, dry wit, and startling information. You'll be intrigued and enlightened as Bergland discusses:
* National defense and terrorism. Find out why a noninterventionist foreign policy would make America safer.
* Education. Find out why government per-pupil spending has doubled over the last 30 years -- and yet 47 million Americans are "borderline illiterates."
* The War on Drugs. Find out the 15 most compelling arguments against drug prohibition. And how the War on Drugs encourages criminals to make more potent, dangerous drugs.
* Poverty. Find out why government welfare programs perpetuate poverty -- instead of curing it.
* The environment. Did you know: The federal government pollutes more than all chemical and oil companies combined -- but not a single bureaucrat can be prosecuted for environmental crimes because of sovereign immunity.
* Guns and crime. Find out why guns make you safer -- whether you own one or not.
* Health care. Find out which two healthcare reforms would immediately shift power back to consumers.
And there's still more! Bergland demolishes the fuzzy thinking that encourages people to blindly turn to government and politicians to solve problems. Once you read this chapter, you'll never again fall victim to the Utopian Fallacy, the "PANG" Premise, or the Free Lunch Fallacy. This section alone is worth the price of the book!
Libertarianism In One Lesson is an eye-opening book. It will change the way you look at government, laws, politics -- and human liberty. It offers a hopeful, inspiring vision of a libertarian renaissance in America. And it will give you hope for a better tomorrow in America. Buy your copy today!

PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Dear friends,
I have some very good news about the amazing growth and acceptance of the Advocates' World's Smallest Political Quiz -- and what that means for libertarians.
UPDATE 1: QUIZ IN BOOKS
As the World's Smallest Political Quiz has gained respect from political experts and the media, it has been printed, recommended, or commented on in an increasing number of books.
Now Advocates Communications Director Bill Winter has created a great new "Quiz In Books" Web page to celebrate this.
It features 3-D photos of eleven such books, along with the author, publisher, date, and a quote that mentions the Quiz.
You can see it here: http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz-in-books.html
Check it out!
UPDATE 2: QUIZ IN CLASSROOMS:
Wow! The number of classrooms that are using the Quiz is growing dramatically. New research by Bill Winter has confirmed 420 schools in the United States and around the world that have incorporated the World's Smallest Political Quiz into their classrooms.
(And that number is just a *fraction* of the actual number of classes using the Quiz -- see my next item to understand why.)
This is *great news* for libertarians! Increasing numbers of high school and college students are being taught that politics is more than a simplistic Left-Right line -- and they're learning that libertarians are a vital and significant part of the political spectrum.
To learn more, read this report: http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz-in-class.html
To see the list of schools that are using (or have recently used) the Quiz in their classrooms: http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz-in-class-list.html
Educators: if you use the Quiz in your classroom, let us know of your experiences. And contact us about getting FREE Quiz cards for your classes.
UPDATE 3: QUIZ IN TEXTBOOKS:
Tens of thousands of high school and college students are encountering the World's Smallest Political Quiz. That's because at least a *dozen* popular textbooks feature the Quiz as part of their enhanced digital content.
These textbooks and e-learning materials are offered by some of the most prominent names in the educational publishing field, including the McGraw-Hill Companies, Prentice Hall, W.W. Norton, and Houghton Mifflin Company.
Again: just think what this means for the future of American politics!
You can see some of these textbooks -- and learn more details -- here: http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz-in-textbooks.html
HELP! QUIZ SITE OVERLOADED!
As you can tell, use of the Quiz is exploding! The numbers are growing much faster than we expected -- in fact, a whopping 50-70 percent faster. Thousands of people take the Quiz -- every day! Many of them, as I've indicated, are students.
And increasingly the Quiz is reaching people around the world. Last month we got a surge of an extra 8,000 Quiz-takes every day for a solid week -- from a mention at *just one* Web site in Japan.
This is great news... but it's brought with it an unexpected problem.
As I mentioned to you yesterday in a separate email, the unexpected boom in traffic has put a strain on our shared server.
Sometimes, during a surge of visitors, the server is simply overwhelmed and the Quiz cannot be accessed. Other times, the Quiz suddenly starts running *very* slowly -- so maddeningly slow that people get fed up and leave.
By my estimate, we're losing 1,000 Quiz visitors a day.
We can't let this happen! One of those persons might be the next Bill Gates. Or the next Rush Limbaugh.
Or a future activist, candidate, scholar contributor, or other spokesperson for the libertarian cause.
We need to take another step forward in growth *now* -- earlier than we'd expected.
Can you make a small donation to help us quickly fix this problem?
I've explained this problem -- and how you can help -- here: http://www.theadvocates.org/web-site-problems.html
Your help is very much needed right now, and very much appreciated. It will make a real difference.
Thank you!

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS, UNBELIEVABLE NEWS
by James W. Harris
Three Top TV Pundits Say: "I'm a Libertarian -- Sort Of"
In just the past few days, some of television's best-known political commentators have referred to themselves as libertarians or libertarian sympathizers.
Who are they? And what does this mean for libertarians?
Joe Scarborough is host of MSNBC's "Scarborough County." His November 1 show featured a debate about pornography made and broadcast by college students on a publicly-funded student-run campus TV channel.
Scarborough made this remark:
SCARBOROUGH: "OK, OK, so Steve, this is where you lose me, though. I mean, if you want to go out and film porn of yourself and girls, that is your business. I am a libertarian, okay? But I don't want to pay for it...."
This isn't the first time. A year ago, on November 8, 2004, during a wide-ranging debate on religion and politics, Scarborough said:
SCARBOROUGH: "Take me, for instance. I'm more libertarian than conservative. I supported George W. Bush, but I don't want federal judges telling me what marriages people in Florida should accept. As far as gay marriage, if somebody in Vermont wants to get married and they are gay, I don't care. That is up to Vermont. But I don't want a judge in Vermont telling me in Florida to accept that."
Then there's Catherine Crier: Court TV anchor and author.
On October 27, on MSNBC's "Scarborough County," she thought a guest referred to her as a "liberal." She was quick to object:
CRIER: "No, no, no. I'm not -- I am a former Texas Republican judge. I have never been called a liberal. I am a libertarian, if anything."
This would seem consistent with this statement in the first chapter of her new book Contempt: How the Right is Wronging American Justice:
"I wrote the book The Case Against Lawyers in 2002. This book castigated behavior on the left and the right of the political spectrum... Today I consider myself a true independent with some libertarian leanings."
And this is nothing new for Crier. Consider this excerpt from the online campaign diary Libertarian Party presidential candidate Harry Browne kept during his 2000 race:
BROWNE: "To my surprise, [Catherine Crier] makes it clear before the interview begins that she thinks highly of libertarian ideas. She says she hopes I get into the debates because otherwise this year's race is very boring.
"The 10-minute interview itself goes beautifully. In the first minute, I say, 'I want to set you free to live your life as you want to live it -- not as Al Gore or George Bush thinks is best for you, or best for the Fatherland. After all, you're the one who earns the money, you're the one who gets up every day and goes to work. Why should they be taking your money and deciding how much of it they're going to let you keep for yourself? Why don't you decide how much of it you're going to give to them?'
"To this, [Catherine Crier] says enthusiastically, "Yes! Yes!" We cover repealing the income tax, getting the government out of Social Security, and ending the Drug War. She adds her own comments to explain why each of these steps would be beneficial. At the end she insists that I come back for a longer interview. Happily, we've found a new friend."
Finally, there's Tucker Carlson, host of MSNBC's "The Situation with Tucker Carlson."
In 2004 and 2005, he hosted PBS's "Tucker Carlson: Unfiltered." A PBS press release said that: "Carlson combines a conservative and libertarian take on the news with a wry skepticism and unconventional opinions."
On his MSNBC TV show Carlson continues to express many libertarian views. He generally advocates a limited role for government, opposes the Drug War, strongly defends free speech, and supports the free market.
Unlike many conservatives with libertarian leanings, Carlson is also a strong critic of the Iraq war. He reluctantly supported it at first, but a trip to Iraq for an article for Esquire changed his mind. "I think it's a total nightmare and disaster, and I'm ashamed that I went against my own instincts in supporting it," he said. "I want things to work out, but I'm enraged by it, actually."
This recent exchange with a telephone caller, from October 19, probably nicely sums up Carlson's current views:
CALLER: "Hey, Tucker. I swear I'm a Democrat but you are turning me into a libertarian. Not that there is anything wrong with that..."
CARLSON: "Thank you. I would just close your eyes and let it wash over you like a warm wave of reason: libertarianism. I'm not a strict libertarian -- I'm not completely insane. But I am informed by the libertarian spirit, which I think [is] a good place to be."
It's clear that these three prominent opinion-leaders aren't libertarians -- yet -- but they like and respect libertarian ideas, and they understand and appreciate the label, too.
So what does this mean for libertarianism? A lot. It shows that libertarian ideas are rapidly gaining ground. Among the most influential segments of society, libertarianism is being recognized as a legitimate and worthy political viewpoint, distinct from liberalism and conservatism.
Further, libertarianism is more and more attractive to mainstream Americans -- otherwise, these ratings-savvy hosts would never use the word "libertarian" in describing their political beliefs. Of course, this also means that millions of Americans have become familiar enough with the word to have at least a general idea of what it means -- or, again, these journalists/hosts would not use it. And that's another very positive advance.
Finally, as Harry Browne's experience indicates, it may mean that libertarians will receive increasingly respectful media attention in the months and years to come.
All this is a sign of great progress. The persistent, positive outreach that libertarians are doing is paying off. Keep up the good work!

Denver Votes to End Marijuana Use and Possession Penalties
Are we seeing, as one prominent activist predicts, "the beginning of the end of marijuana prohibition in the U.S."?
On November 1, Denver became the second major city in less than a year to eliminate all civil and criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana by citizens age 21 and older.
Fully 54 percent of voters passed "I-100: The Alcohol-Marijuana Equalization Initiative." This initiative, led by the organization SAFER (Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation), argued that local laws should treat the private adult use and possession of marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol, and that its use by adults should not be subject to criminal penalties.
There's more.
Last fall Oakland, California voters approved a similar initiative to "tax and regulate the sale of cannabis for adult use."
And on November 1 a proposal in Telluride, Colorado to make "the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of marijuana offenses ... the town's lowest law enforcement priority" missed winning by only 24 votes.
"A few years from now, this [Denver] vote may well be seen as the proverbial 'tipping point,' the beginning of the end of marijuana prohibition in the U.S.," said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. "Replacing the failed policy of prohibition with common-sense taxation and regulation of marijuana has become a thoroughly mainstream issue, with the voters of two major U.S. cities endorsing such an approach within one year.
"Last year, there were more than three-quarters of a million marijuana arrests, an all-time record," Kampia added. "That's equivalent to arresting every man, woman, and child in the state of Wyoming plus every man, woman, and child in St. Paul, Minnesota.
"The public understands that this simply makes no sense. Regulating marijuana will take money out of the pockets of criminals and free police to go after violent crime, and the voters of Denver took their first step in that direction today."
Ironically, Denver was the site of the very first federal marijuana arrest in American history. On October 2, 1937, Samuel R. Caldwell, a 58-year-old unemployed laborer, was arrested by the FBI and Denver police for selling two marijuana cigarettes to a 26-year-old man. For this dastardly act, Caldwell was sentenced to four years' hard labor at Leavenworth Prison, and fined the then-enormous sum of $1,000. Caldwell served every day of the sentence, and died a year after release.
Of course, local measures like the Denver one don't override state and federal prohibitions against marijuana. But they give citizens enormous and very real protection at the local level. Such measures also very strongly catch the ear of federal politicians.
This may be part of a growing trend: pro-liberty communities defying unjust federal laws by passing local legislation. It's quite similar to the nationwide revolt against the Patriot Act by local and state governments, which we've reported on in past issues.
Which city is next?

Support for Re-legalizing Marijuana Reaches All-Time High
Public support for legalizing marijuana has reached an all-time high -- another victory for libertarian ideas.
According to a new Gallup study:
* The percentage of Americans who favor making the personal use of marijuana legal has risen more than 33 percent since 1995.
* Overall, thirty-six percent of Americans favoring legalization, up from 25 percent in 1995 and only 12 percent in 1969.
* Sixty percent said they oppose legalizing marijuana, down from 73 percent just a decade ago.
* Younger Americans (aged 18 to 29) are the strongest supporters of marijuana law reform, with 47 percent endorsing legalization. Having a near-majority of young voters favoring legalization is a very positive sign.
* Among adults aged 30 to 64, 35 percent support legalization; among those aged 65 and older, 22 percent.
* Men (39 percent) are more likely than women (30 percent) to support legalization.
* Nearly half of citizens residing in Western states back legalization.
* By party: 21 percent of Republican voters favor legalization; 37 percent of Democrats; and a whopping 44 percent of self-identified Independents.
Gallup's conclusion: "The data make it clear that despite the gender and age differences that still persist, all subgroups are more likely to support legalized marijuana today than three decades ago."

William F. Buckley: "An outrage..."
"The amount of money and of legal energy being given to prosecute hundreds of thousands of Americans who are caught with a few ounces of marijuana in their jeans simply makes no sense -- the kindest way to put it. A sterner way to put it is that it is an outrage, an imposition on basic civil liberties and on the reasonable expenditure of social energy."
-- conservative icon William F. Buckley, "Legalization of Marijuana Long Overdue," June 8, 1993.

PERSUASION POWER POINT # 191
Who's Vaccinating People Against Liberty?
by Michael Cloud
Doctors vaccinate people against some diseases by injecting them with a weakened or killed form of the virus that causes the disease.
Our bodies respond by increasing our resistance or becoming immune to the disease.
A similar process occurs when individuals are vaccinated against an *idea* with a weakened or killed form of the idea.
Individuals are being vaccinated against liberty. Against private property. Against free trade. Against all the elements of libertarianism.
Weakened and watered-down "liberty concepts" inoculate individuals against the true ideas of liberty.
Diluted and debased "liberty proposals" immunize individuals against powerful proposals for liberty.
Adulterated and flawed "liberty arguments" vaccinate individuals against potent arguments for liberty.
Who's vaccinating people against liberty? Government-run public schools. The news media. Most Americans.
They call government-regulated, government-controlled exchange -- "Free Trade."
They call a government-granted monopoly to a politically-connected business -- "Privatization."
They call government-outsourcing -- "Privatization."
They call America's government-regulated economy, with massive government mandates and licensing of businesses -- "Free Enterprise."
They call tax-funded, government-granted school vouchers -- "School Choice."
They call government-created entitlements -- "rights."
But it doesn't stop with them.
Who else is aiding and abetting the vaccination of people against liberty?
Libertarians. You and me.
How?
When we do not speak out against -- and correct -- their corrupted and compromised concepts, proposals, and arguments.
When we do not compare and contrast *real* free trade with their fake process.
When we do not show the difference between *true* privatization and their phony arrangement.
When we do not highlight and spotlight what freedom is and what it is not -- what their proposal is and what it is not.
When we do not define the basic and essential differences between voluntary and coercive, between freedom and compulsion, between free trade and government-regulated trade, between privatized and outsourced, between free enterprise and a government-dominated mixed economy.
How do *you* benefit from speaking up -- and speaking out?
Because, by doing so, you vaccinate others against anti-liberty vaccinations!
By exposing others to libertarianism, you make them resistant or immune to watered-down, weakened adulterations.
If you could immunize others against anti-liberty vaccinations, would you want it?
If I were to show you exactly how to do this, would you try it with a few friends?
Read my next Persuasion Power Point column. Because it will be the first of many columns that will show you exactly how to vaccinate others against anti-liberty vaccinations!

Monopolies: What about John D. Rockefeller?
Question:
"You once wrote that oil magnate John D. Rockefeller kept oil prices low because there were no antitrust laws while he built his business. But Rockefeller kept prices extremely low in order to create a monopoly. Everyone would buy his cheaper product and then his competitors would go out of business. Rockefeller could then buy them out for pennies on the dollar. Then he could jack up prices again -- because he had a monopoly."
My short answer:
"It sounds like we have a communication mix-up. Let me try again!
"Even after he put others out of business because of his low prices, Rockefeller had to *keep* prices low to prevent new competitors from underselling *him*. He was indeed trying to create an oil monopoly -- and was successful in obtaining 90% of the market for a few years.
"However, by 1911, when antitrust action was taken against him, Standard Oil refined only 64% of the domestic petroleum and was steadily losing market share to natural gas and electricity as well as other refiners. Competition and innovation, not antitrust law, kept Rockefeller from maintaining his near-monopoly.
"By contrast, consider the case of Bell Telephone (AT&T). Bell had the entire telephone monopoly due to its patents until 1894. But competition quickly sprang up, bringing innovation and lower prices. By 1907, some 20,000 independents had taken half of Bell's former market share.
"Bell regained its monopoly -- through legislation that forbade competition and maintained its monopoly in this way for almost 75 years, keeping prices artificially high and stifling innovation.
"In a free market, it is difficult, even for someone as rich and powerful as Rockefeller, to obtain and maintain a near-monopoly for more than a few years. However, in a regulated market, it is only necessary to lobby government for the passage of favorable legislation, like Bell did, to obtain an iron-clad monopoly and hold it for generations.

Would you rather have Saddam Hussein in power?
Question:
"I frequently hear defenders of the Iraq war respond to critics by saying "Oh, so you'd rather Saddam Hussein was still in power?" What would be a short, effective response to that?"
My short answer:
"I personally might answer:
"If it's OK for us to overthrow Saddam because we think he's a tyrant, then those who believe our president falls in the same category (e.g., most Islamic nations) will feel free to follow our example. Would you support the invasion of Iraq if it ultimately leads to invasion of the United States or new acts of terror against us?"
OR:
"Since Saddam was no immediate threat to us, we spent time and money on him instead of on terrorists planning further attacks in the near future. I'd rather see Saddam in power if it means that we can use the resources spent on the Iraqi war to prevent further attacks on our soil."
OR:
"I'd rather have Saddam in power than have the blood of 25,000 or more innocent Iraqi civilians -- men, women, and children -- on my hands."

Each issue we'll be sharing some of the best. Enjoy -- and put them to use for liberty!
* * * * * * * * * * * *
* It's a free country -- isn't it?: "In a free country, the government doesn't rummage through your bank account -- looking for evidence with which to hang you. Government doesn't take nearly half the national income in federal, state, and local taxes, and dole some of it back to us as though we were children on an allowance. The government doesn't force you to buy its old-age insurance or lose your job -- as though it were a Mafia protection racket. The government doesn't force your employer or insurance company to provide certain fringe benefits at the expense of the benefits you'd rather have."
* "Worthy" government programs: "It's easy to see how someone has been helped by money taken from someone else, especially when we can't see the people whose lives have been hurt by taking that money away -- the family who now can't afford braces for their child's teeth, or who must move into a smaller home, or who can't afford college educations for their children. Or the businessman who has been driven out of business by government regulations and taxes. As long as you ignore the people who have been hurt, any government program might seem worthy."
*Federal funding of local programs: "Federal funding means federal rules. It means that 535 drunken sailors in Washington will set the rules for your local police department, your board of education, your local hospital, your family doctor, your streets, your town's welfare system. These 535 know-it-alls can't balance the federal checkbook and they don't have time to read any of the bills they pass, but they claim to know more about running your city than you or any of your neighbors -- and they claim to know better than you how to manage your life. No wonder federal programs lead to such devastation."

And there's so much more!

WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE ADVOCATES
* Quiz your tax preparer: Renowned financial advisor and author Richard Maybury made the following recommendation to readers of his financial newsletter Early Warning Report: "If you suspect your tax preparer is working for the government not you, or if you are interviewing a new tax preparer, you might want to go to the World's Smallest Political Quiz [Web site]. Ask the preparer to take the Quiz, then check his or her score." Great idea! Check out Maybury's provocative newsletter and outstanding educational books at: http://www.richardmaybury.com/welcome.html
* OPH at Notre Dame: The Notre Dame College Libertarians held a very successful OPH outreach booth in early November. OPH (Operation Politically Homeless) is the Advocates tool that turns an ordinary outreach booth into a crowd-drawing event, using the Quiz and other material. The Notre Dame Libertarians noted that the Quiz "is remarkably accurate in identifying a person's political beliefs, given that it can be administered in about 2 minutes flat and is easy to do....This format is information-rich and gives a compact way to represent people who consider themselves combinations such as "fiscally conservative but socially liberal." We also like their Web site's description of the Quiz: "uber-cool"! Thanks! (Notre Dame College Libertarians: http://www.nd.edu/~liberty/ ) (Info on OPH: http://www.theadvocates.org/oph.html )
* Quiz praised in campus paper: "Left, Right or Other? Escaping the trap of one-dimensional politics" is an excellent article by Brian Dean on the Quiz that appeared in the November 15 Valley Star, the independent student newspaper of Los Angeles Valley College. Excerpt: "The left-versus-right system was inadequate to begin with. Political thought throughout history has never been so narrow as to be contained by such simplicity.... The solution: the World's Smallest Political Quiz. .... The results give a much clearer idea of where people stand as political thinkers than the old system." Thanks, Brian! http://www.lavalleystar.com/home/

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS, UNBELIEVABLE NEWS
by James W. Harris
Romantic Libertarian: Meet Acclaimed Novelist Lauren Royal
A link to the World's Smallest Political Quiz at her Web site is just one indication that award-winning historical romance author Lauren Royal is a libertarian.
Here's another. Although Royal sets her novels -- including the popular "Jewel" and "Flower" trilogies -- amidst the castles and pageantry of 17th century England, she says she was most inspired by the great libertarian science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, author of such classics as The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and Stranger In a Strange Land.
"I think Robert A. Heinlein was probably most influential," Royal told Advocates Director of Communications Bill Winter in a November interview. "I devoured his books during my elementary school years, and I suspect the ideals espoused in them formed the foundation for my later beliefs."
Royal also lists the writings of Ayn Rand and "our country's Founding Fathers" as prime influences.
"I am very much a libertarian," Royal confirms. "I believe we have the right to do whatever we wish with ourselves and our belongings, so long as the decisions we make don't affect other people and their property against their will. I want to see government confined to its proper role, to protect and serve us and stay out of our personal lives."
Royal traces her libertarian beliefs to "a very politically aware family. We walked precincts for various candidates. We all read the newspapers -- especially the op-ed pages -- and discussed issues around the dinner table. My father is libertarian-leaning and my mother is not, but we were all encouraged to come to our own conclusions and share our views. Now my husband and I do the same with our own children."
Although her novels focus more on forbidden love, broken hearts, and romantic escapades than politics, Royal says her libertarian beliefs do influence her writing.
"Although I write fiction, my characters -- the good ones, at least - - share my values," she says. "In romance fiction especially, the protagonists are referred to as heroes and heroines -- and I wouldn't consider a character 'heroic' if his or her thoughts and actions didn't reflect the beliefs I admire and think right."
Royal's first novel, Amethyst, was published in 2000. It was nominated by Romantic Times for "Best First Historical Romance," and was followed by two more novels in the "Jewel" trilogy, Emerald (2000), and Amber (2001). Another series followed, the "Flower" trilogy: Violet (2002), Lily (2003), and Rose (2003). Royal also contributed to In Praise of Younger Men (2001). In 2005, she published Lost in Temptation, the first novel of the projected "Sweet Temptations" trilogy.
Royal once said she writes romance fiction because it "is very empowering for women. We get to see all different sorts of women, with all different sorts of strengths and weaknesses, overcome all different sorts of problems to win love and fulfillment."
Royal's books have earned considerable acclaim. Amber was named a Booklist "Top Ten Romance" of 2001, while Rose won the "Golden Quill Award for Best Historical Romance." The Castle Historical Romance Society called her novels "witty and sensual." Carol Carter in Under The Covers said Royal is "an author on her way to becoming a favorite of historical romance readers.

How to Fix Wal-Mart
There is a lot of hatred being stirred up against Wal-Mart, from both the left and the right. There's even a new documentary movie devoted to demonizing Wal-Mart, playing across the country now.
A great response to all this comes from a radio commentary by Paul Jacob, Senior Fellow for Americans for Limited Government:
"Some folks don't like Wal-Mart. Okay. Fine. It's a free country. No one should be forced at gunpoint to shop at Wal-Mart. Or to work there.
"And no one is.
"Wal-Mart has found enormous success in the marketplace only because people have voluntarily chosen to shop and work there. Wal-Mart employs more than 1.6 million people worldwide and, according to the company's published calculations, its lower prices saved the average American family $2,329 last year.
"Now I know why, when my wife sends me to the store, she says, "Go to Wal-Mart."
"And yet we witness a sustained and hysterical assault against the company...
"What on earth makes offering lower prices so evil?
"We're told Wal-Mart doesn't pay its employees enough. It doesn't offer generous enough benefits. But if Wal-Mart is so terrible, why didn't these employees choose to take other jobs? Or, were no better jobs available? Is it remotely possible that Wal-Mart should actually be given credit for creating jobs? Could it be that the company has helped its employees escape unemployment and poverty?
"Listen: the free market offers Wal-Mart haters an easy way to hit Wal-Mart right where it hurts. These folks need only start their own companies and pay workers more and offer generous healthcare benefits. Problem solved!
"Isn't the free market great?"
(Source: "The Freedom to Hate Wal-Mart," Paul Jacobs http://www.getliberty.org NOTE: An expanded version of this responds more fully to common charges against Wal-Mart. Read it at: http://www.townhall.com/opinion/columns/pauljacob/2005/11/20/176217.h tml )

Lawyers Declare War on "Dangerous" Soda Pop Machines
You'll be glad to know that a group of dedicated lawyers are preparing to take on one of the biggest menaces facing Americans today.
No, not the PATRIOT Act or eminent domain laws or the War on Drugs. These particular defenders of the public safety have bigger targets in mind. They're on the verge of launching lawsuits against soft- drink makers for selling sugared sodas in schools.
As the Washington Post colorfully puts it: "The fight against sugary soft drinks is beginning to foam over."
Ironically, the lawsuits come at a time when there has been a sharp *drop* in the use of full-calorie carbonated soft drinks at schools. A study by the American Beverage Association shows a stunning 24 percent drop in school purchases of such drunks from 2002 to 2004.
In 2004, according to the study, high-schoolers drank the equivalent of one 12-ounce can of such soda a week in school. Younger students drank even less.
The reason? The growing popularity of sports drinks, juice and good old-fashioned water. From 2002 to 2004 the amount of sports drinks sold grew nearly 70 percent, bottled water 23 percent, diet soda 22 percent and fruit juice 15 percent. Some of this was due to student choice. Some was due to school policy changes as a result of persuasion -- not lawsuits -- from parents and consumer groups.
But this display of self-responsibility and self-governance isn't going to stop Richard A. Daynard, the lawyer leading the lawsuit drive. Daynard, known as the "intellectual godfather of tobacco litigation," was a key figure in many of the state anti-tobacco suits that led to the landmark $246 billion settlement in 1998. He personally pocketed a cool million bucks-plus from that effort.
"The idea is to get soda machines out of schools because they are clearly making a substantial contribution to the obesity epidemic," Daynard told the Washington Post. "This is an unfair practice under state consumer-protection laws."
Say what? Daynard explains that the suit's legal basis is the concept of "attractive nuisance: If somebody has something on his land like a swimming pool that he knows is attractive to kids and dangerous, then he has some obligation to keep the kids away from it. You want to keep kids away from dangerous objects, and a soda machine is demonstrated to be a dangerous object for kids."
Oh, yeah, those dangerous soda machines. We especially hate the ones that have the mechanical arms that jump out, grab passing kids, force their mouths open, and pour sugary concoctions down their throats, relentlessly, day after day.
The lawyers say they're ready to go. Their only problem is... finding some parents to sign on as plaintiffs for the class-action case. "It's taking us longer than we expected," Daynard admitted.
Well, that's good news. Still, we expect some parents can eventually be found under a rock somewhere who will argue that their child's obesity can be blamed not on their own lifestyle choices, or on parental irresponsibility, but on some nefarious corporation.
Hey, who owns those "public schools" that are allowing the sale of soft drinks, anyway? The government, right? Maybe these lawyers ought to sue the government. Oh, yeah, we forgot -- you can't do that. Sovereign immunity and all. And anyway, that's not where the big money is, as the lawyers pursuing this extremely lucrative nonsense know all too well.

Obesity and the State...
"For most of us, obesity is not a disease but a failure of self- control. It's in the same category as procrastination, impatience and many other character traits I try to improve. I don't want the government hectoring me to eat less and exercise more. I don't want the government using my money and yours to monitor my fat intake or the cholesterol allowed in the menu at the local fast food restaurant. And I don't want the government taxing fat on menus, at groceries or on my 1040 Form."
-- Russell Roberts, "No Fat Tax," St. Louis Post Dispatch, March 21, 2002
* * * * * * * * "Good News, Bad News, Unbelievable News" is written by Liberator Online editor James W. Harris. PERSUASION POWER POINT # 192
Always Leave Them Wanting More
by Michael Cloud
Stage performers do it.
Great movies do it.
Powerful novels do it.
They give you what you want -- and leave you wanting more.
"I never wanted it to end, so I bought another ticket and watched it again," said one of the tens of thousands of repeat customers of the movie Titanic. Hundreds of thousands more did the same with Star Wars and Harry Potter.
"...I didn't want to leave the world of Atlas Shrugged' so when I finished reading it, I turned to page one and began again," said a college student.
There are hundreds of thousands of Ayn Rand fans who re-read Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead many times.
"I can't get enough Rush Limbaugh," said a regular listener. "When the show ends, I can hardly wait until tomorrow's show."
They give their fans what they want -- and leave them wanting more.
What's their secret? How do they do it?
How can you use their secret to boost the impact of your libertarian conversations?
Simple. Master supply and demand.
Supply libertarian ideas only to those who demand them. Do not flood the market. Never totally satisfy the demand.
Unsatisfied demand leaves them wanting more. It brings them back.
This is what toy manufacturers do every Christmas with their hottest toy. And it works.
This is what series novelists like Tom Clancy or James Patterson or Sue Grafton do. And what Scheherazade did in 1001 Arabian Nights.
Just follow 3 simple steps to master supply and demand.
1. Identify those individuals who clearly show you that they are receptive and responsive and ready for libertarianism. Those whose questions and comments demonstrate that they want liberty.
2. Have informative, thoughtful, and lively conversations about liberty with them. Tell them the features, functions, and benefits of libertarianism. Engage them. Ask what they like best about libertarianism -- and why.
3. End the conversation while it's still going strong. Before they've fully satisfied their curiosity. While they still want more. 15 to 30 minutes in person. 10 to 20 minutes on the phone.
This will cause them to remember more of what you said. And remember it longer. (The Zeigarnik Effect.)
It will increase their curiosity about libertarianism. Increase their desire for it.
It will make them more receptive and responsive to libertarianism during your next conversation. And more likely to buy and read the libertarian book you recommend afterwards.
Wouldn't you love it?
Want some more pointers and guidelines? Buy and read The Rules by Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider. It says it contains "Time-Tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right." It does.
But The Rules is much more than a bright woman's guide for dating.
It's a superb marketing strategy for libertarians.
Follow these rules of supply and demand in your libertarian conversations.
You'll give your listeners what they want -- and leave them wanting more.

What's a good response to well-intentioned but bad laws?
Question:
"Many organizations are working to pass legislation to ban so-called "drive-through" mastectomies -- the practice in which women are forced out of the hospital sometimes only hours after breast cancer surgery. Some bills would require insurance companies to cover a 48- hour minimum stay for mastectomy patients and a 24-hour stay for a woman undergoing a lymph node dissection. What's a libertarian response to well-intended, reasonable-sounding -- but bad -- legislation like this?"
My short answer:
"Every time we mandate insurance coverage of something, such as longer hospital stays after mastectomies, insurance prices go up. More people can no longer afford insurance and have no coverage at all. Those who can afford the increased premiums benefit at the expense of those who cannot. The rich get richer on the backs of the poor.
"In a libertarian society, people will be freed from the crushing expense of taxes, as well as the artificially high costs of insurance and medical care currently created by excessive regulation. Thus higher quality medical care should be available to everyone."

What responsibilities does an unmarried father have?
Question:
"What if a couple is unmarried when they have a child? What responsibility legally does the father of that child have, even though he has not pledged a legal or moral unbreakable tie to the mother?"
My short answer:
"This is a difficult question in today's government-dominated society. When you go into business with someone without a written partnership agreement, disagreements about the rights and responsibilities of each partner will almost certainly arise.
"Similarly, when you engage in sexual relations without a clear understanding of what will happen if pregnancy occurs, you set yourself up for disagreements about the rights and responsibility of each partner.
"Today, it is fashionable to engage in sexual relations without discussing the very real possibility of conception. Consequently, most unmarried couples find themselves somewhat at odds when faced with an unplanned pregnancy.
"The solution is not to ask the government to dictate a set of standards, but for people to be more responsible in setting standards and agreements of their own before undertaking activities which may result in new life.
"This kind of self-responsibility will be strongly encouraged in a libertarian society, because people won't be able to force taxpayers to fund the consequences of their bad decisions."

Each issue we'll be sharing some of the best. Enjoy -- and put them to use for liberty!
* * * * * * * * * * * *
* Government daycare proposals: "All proposals for government day- care programs -- whether advanced by Republicans or Democrats -- are just attempts to repair the damage caused by previous government programs. We don't need day-care subsidies, day-care tax deductions, or policies to encourage marriage or discourage out-of-wedlock babies. These and other proposals ignore the central problem: the oppressive level of taxation that impoverishes families and forces both spouses into the workforce. The only effective solution is to reduce the federal government to a fraction of its present size and repeal the income tax completely."
* Corporate downsizing: "It is said that corporations are downsizing because they are greedy. But corporations have always wanted to maximize their profits. Why are they doing so now by cutting their payrolls? The answer is that employment regulations -- the Family Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Civil Rights acts, and others -- have become so oppressive that many companies cannot survive unless they cut their payrolls and instead contract for services from companies small enough to be exempt from the oppressive regulations."
* Freeing oppressed people: "If it's our responsibility to free oppressed people wherever they are, let's begin by setting Americans free from big government and the invasions of liberty being imposed on them. "
* * * * * * * * * * * Harry Browne was 1996 and 2000 Libertarian Party presidential candidate. He is the author of a dozen books that have sold over two million copies, including three New York Times bestsellers.
Browne's book "Liberty A to Z: 872 Libertarian Soundbites You Can Use Right Now" is temporarily out of stock. Stay tuned -- we'll announce in the Liberator Online when it becomes available again! _____________________________________

"Michael Cloud's book is brilliant. The stories, techniques, and ideas are right on target. On page after page, I saw new approaches and methods I can start using right away. Secrets of Libertarian Persuasion is the libertarian book that can make a difference." -- Gary Nolan, Libertarian talk radio host

It's the best libertarian book I've read in the last 10 years." -- Justin Kempf, Libertarian Party of Indiana
Do you sincerely want to convince others to become libertarians?

What if you could develop a Midas Touch for liberty -- transforming person after person into libertarians?
Michael Cloud's Secrets of Libertarian Persuasion will take you a long way toward this.
Why isn't everyone desperately seeking freedom? Why are so many people indifferent? Why are many others opposed to liberty? And why have so many people just given up?
Because no one has opened their eyes to the possibility of liberty. No one has touched their hearts with the intense desirability of liberty. No one has reached their minds with the principled and practical wisdom of liberty.
Secrets of Libertarian Persuasion solves these problems. Secrets of Libertarian Persuasion gives you the keys to opening people's hearts and minds to liberty.
What You'll Learn:
* Why libertarians don't need "A Better Mousetrap." (p.23) * What libertarians can learn from Mark Twain's Cat. (p.34) * When impatience undermines libertarian progress. (p.52) * How to gently dissolve many objections in 60 seconds. (p.63) * Get people to "Push the Button" and become libertarians. (p.81) * Treasure Map for finding people who urgently want freedom. (p.83) * One deadly mistake almost every libertarian makes -- and how to avoid it. (p.96) * "You know enough about libertarianism to buy it, but do you know enough to sell it?" (p.126) * When to "Save Your Breath." (p.165) * The Biggest Libertarian Communication Turnoff. (p.171) * How to handle "The Toughest Prospects: Family and Friends." (p.185) * Danger: "Counterfeit Libertarianism." (p.210) * "The Unsettling Question Libertarians Almost Never Ask." (p.236)
And much more!
