That's one thing I often wonder about, you survive an illness sometimes to be drowned in expenses, it's not fair.

10k is a lot and cringe worthy, but at least you aren't playing the amount your insurance is paying. Plus, spending that amount will all be worth it in the end for fixing you up. ^^

I think the sudden call or whatever is kinda scammish, though

Yeah Im glad I dont have to deal with medical stuff in the states.

In NZ you would have paid next to nothing.

I know when I was getting my tests for epilepsy I had the MRIs, CATs, EEG, ECG, Xrays etc. And I paid nothing for any of that. Then I heard a traveller needed a MRI and that was like 10k. So glad I live in a health included country. (Even if I am never actually in that country XD)
