I finally have some stuff to show you guys thats only semi-crap!

Again, I'm going to give you the whole skewed colors bit, I don't have a calibrated workstation with this scanner yet, so bare with this for now?

This one was a one second exposure on E6 slide film on a 4x5 camera at 4.7 The exposure was so long that I ran into reciprocity effect with the lights. I actually kind of like how it looks on the slide, which is more yellow than this. This is actually a shot of a family, a mother and son. Weird, weird family.

And this one was taken in a cafe, same subject. I really love this light a lot, some people have suggested cropping a bit.

So, I went to my internship and got a better scan on a calibrated monitor. Hopefully yours is calibrated too? It had to be dropped from 16-bit color to a web color space (ouch). But, color is fixed, and I ran an unsharp mask on the image.

i think the first one is a bit too busy and distracting for me to really appreciate it, i dont have a central focus when i look at it so to me i think it looks cluttered. i do like the colours though, the lighting is nice and the tones all run together quite well.

i love the expression of the guy in the second one, that blue looking out the window we can all identify with, i do it all the time on the bus; just gaze out and think. i like the whole seat being shown AND the window, so i wouldnt suggest cropping it from either side. i also like the woollen jumper too, the way it creases and looks real enough to touch through the photo. his hands are placed well. i guess i overall just like it so i dont really have any suggestions on improving it.

Hey thanks for the feedback. I really like the cluttered look in the first one personally, but I can see what you mean, there's a lot going on. Does the photo agitate you at all? Maybe it's the colors, who knows.

Also, thanks for the compliment on the second one. The way you described the wool jacket is what I love about 4x5. The detail is so real its almost tangible. biggrin

I really love the second. It might be better cropped, i'd probably side with that crowd.
But oh my god i want to eat that lighting.

i do like the clutter in the second, but might have liked it more if you could have put at least something in focus. The colors would make a good entree for the first though. heart

I realise that alot of this is just agreement but I do look at pictures to get my own ideas before I read the comments above me.

The first thing I thought when I looked at #1- it is very blurry all over and my eyes rested on the feet and that didn't feel nice.
It doesn't give me any of the feelings that I want from a cluttered room scene- of lots of interesting bits to look at, safety, comfort, disorder or claustrophobia.

I just plain love #2 though. It's beutiful and serene and all the blues look really nice. They make me see- clothes> window> glasses in a lovely circle of detail and textures.

Thanks for the posts guys, a general concensus is very helpful. I guess the first one is rather strange after all. The first scan of it didn't turn out too well, nothing really is in focus because of the depth of field and the 1 second exposure. But, it gets a little sharper and details form with an unsharp mask. Also, with the scanner at work, I was able to get a better scan for colors and it looks nicer now. I'll try to upload it on Thursday. I'm glad everyone likes the second one though, I thought it might be too boring!

Well, I don't know how much about photography you know. D: Maybe you're confusing depth of field with focus?

Depth of Field = How much of it is in focus.

Focus = Whats intended to be in focus.

So, I tilted the lens so his leg would be out of focus, and the majority of the focus would be on his and her face. You can see that his face is sharpened a bit compared to the first one. The sharpness also shows in her hand, which you can see now is moving.

I can see very well that there is depth of feild here, and that the faces and torsos of the two people are more in focus than the legs.
But everything is still to some degree blurry....fuzzy...not sharp, like it would be if i were not wearing my glasses. i dont know what else to say.

i mean, i suppose the image is fine like that, it's still an interesting subject and well shot other wise. i'm just saying what i thought might have been better.

Heeeeey, totally not contructive feedback: Does the kid play piano? If not, he should- he's got piano fingers.

I'm going to go with TheFerret here and post something totally not constructive feedback.

So, I lurk in Art Fags, rarely post. I clicked into this thread, and realized... I recognized the guy in the picture. You go to my school.
