It was about a week after his second failed hatching, second time round of being rejected by the dragons and Zeren sat outside of the Weyr, the letter in his hands crumpled and folded he sat on the ground hugging his knees, the paper clutched tightly in one hand. it had obviously been read and screwed up, then smoothed out again for re-reading. He sat along one of the paths with his head down, his eyes closed and red from emotion. It was a letter from his parents, well more sepcifically his mother but still it was pretty much what he expected but not what he had been wanting to read.
He was so lost in himself that he didn't notice the sun started to go down, not even when he began to feel chilled as the temperature dropped once the sun was setting. How long he was sat there...even he didn't know/care.

A bright chitter broke the quiet, and a green flit, her paler markings the most noticeable in the gloom, whirled through the dark and sprawled against Zeren with an startling impact, shook herself, and chittered again, apparently completely undeterred by her issues with night flying.
The small flit's arrival was shortly followed by heavy, gritting footsteps of something quadrupedal, and an complicated series of hisses and grunts as Kazvask 'spoke' with his partner, though it was hard to say about what, exactly, since Kazvar, lagging behind in a sort of curious parade, wasn't translating, tossing a small pebble in Zeren's general direction as he pointed out.
"I notice they haven't sent you packing yet."
It was a jest based on one of his earliest conversations with Zeren.

Zeren was suddenly shoved forwards by an small but significant impact at his back. He panicked for a moment, especially when he heard something else behind him. He turned round swiftly and t his surprise, whtever was on his back, chittered, and a large blue from emerged from the darkeness "Kazvask" he said, getting up quickly and wiping at his eyes, stuffing the letter into a pocket. A pebble whizzed by just mere moments before Kaz became visible.
"I notice they haven't sent you packing yet."
Zeren's lip trembled and the tears he thought had run dry, sprang unbidden to his eyes again. He looked down and away, bringing his hand out of his pocket almost guiltily.
The green flit noticed he was sad and crooned a little but she'd also noticed that he had something in his pocket and immediately shoved her face into in, clinging to Zeren with sharp little claws, she emerged with the letter and Zeren made a grab for it but she just sped off towards Kazvar.

Oh... shards. Kazvar stopped in his tracks, looking a bit like he'd just realized that he'd planted his foot into the middle of a nest of something's eggs and crushed a large portion of them.
He grunted in surprise as Star snatched the letter from Zeren, but held his hand out for her as she fluttered back to him, prizing it from her claws. It was something to focus on, and something he was better prepared to deal with than...
"Don't sniffle at me. You haven't aged off the damn sands yet." He grumbled, roughly. "What's this?"

Zeren blinked, the flit was acting more like Viska than her usual self. He wanted to reply, to say something but his throat was closed as Kazvar began reading the letter.
The contents Zeren, i have been talking to your father and you've yet again failed miserably at your silly dreams of flying dragons, we're disappointed in you Zeren, your sister would never have gone off and done something so worthless. now i know what you're thinking, 'how can you call dragons worthless' and you know sharding well that i mean your obsession with them. You are to come home, back to the caravan and stop being such a dissapointment to your father and to me. It's obvious that you just lack whatever it takes to be a noble dragonrider. Pull your head out of the clouds and come home and start being something useful. If you continue to pursue this crazed, child's dream then you're not my son. As long as you put the Weyr first, then i have lost both of my children.
Signed,... mother.
Zeren wrung his hands together as Kazvar read what he could in the dim light.

"Grew up raised by Cretche workers and had more of a mother than this broad legged whore." Kazvar snorted, curling his lip.
Shhhhhhhrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip Kazvar tore the letter with an sharp jerk, parting the writing surface, and then ripping it again, and again, and tossing them aside like chunks of confetti.
"Malvren brought you here because a dragon said you had the potential. If you dragon isn't on the sands, they still want your blood and abilities here. If you want to just walk back and be a trader, and hope that your children -might- be searched in time, you do that. If you want to take a chance that your dragon is waiting to be clutched, you sharding do that." He snarled, his voice was a dark, hot crackle, like someone had run a fork through a bed of ashes and turned up snapping coals. "And if you want to do neither, and want to go learn from a Master Wher handler, you do that. Cause the only person who you need to worry about disappointing is yourself."
He stopped, having strung more words together than he usually did in the span of hours. His dark eyes glittering in the moonlight.
Even Star, friendly and enthusiastic as she was, refused to land on him, fluttering about close at hand in the light from the glows outside.
"Clear?" He finished, the word barely escaping before his jaws snapped shut again like a prison on words.

Zeren stared. his mouth hung open a little at Kazvar's speech, it was the longest amount of time he'd ever heard the wherhandler talk for and he was a little bit scared, the tone of his voice was dangerous. His hands dropped from their wringing and just flopped by his side in surprise.

Kazvar glowered for several more moments, silent now, and then scuffed the ground aggressively with the toe of his boot, kicking earth over the shredded fragments of the letter.
He cleared his throat quietly, apparently not sure what else to say, and started to move past Zeren, Kazvask shooting a glance between the two of them, huffing, and moving forward.
Having said his piece, he wasn't sure what else to do, exactly, but go on with his night. He had work to do, weather Zeren chose to stay or go.

Zeren stared for a moment or two longer. "i'm ....i'm not going back" he said so quietly he didn't know if Kazvar had heard him. He trembled ever so slightly as Kaz walked towards him ....oh .. he was moving to go past him. Zeren gulped and put his hand on Kaz's arm before he got too far "Kaz ....thank you" he said, chewing the corner of his lip a little.

Kaz stopped again, glancing to Zeren, and then quirking an half smile. It was a grim smile, but it was a smile, and he didn't move to shake off Zeren's hand.
"Good." he said simply, and gave Zeren a firm pat on the arm. "Good." He added again, cooly, then nodded faintly toward the darkness as Kazvask moved on ahead with something that might have been a chortle. "Patrol." He added, simply. There wasn't anything else to say about his job. Zeren had gone out with him before.
"Come if you want, or go to bed."

Zeren was surprised yet again when Kaz made no move to pull his arm away, even giving him a sort of smile in return.
Zeren tightened his grip on Kazvar's arm for a second and impulsively kissed him briefly before moving away slightly and following after Kazvask. "I'm not tired" he replied. "he....cares .. he actually cares enough to believe in me, to want me to stay?" his mind raced as he followed the blue shape. "oh shards.. did i really just kiss him, and there are no greens/gold rising?!"

Kazvar kissed him back, briefly and a bit roughly, and tousled the young man's hair lightly.
"You will be." he pointed out, though this could be taken any number of ways as he started walking again. "If you get in trouble, it's your own fault." He pointed out.
Maybe the Weyr was wearing off on him, Zeren hadn't been this comfortable with such a gesture before the Gold flight.

Zeren ducked a little under the hair tousling and smiled, as surprised as he was at himself, he was just as surprised that Kaz had returned the gesture and was actually having fun with him. "oh? well yes i guess i will be tired after patrolling with you" he replied. His eyes still felt itchy and dry but the fact that someone who didn't HAVE to believe in him... did ... made him very happy at that moment, the fact the man had gone so far as to get angry about the letter, enough to tear it and make the biggest speech he's heard from Kazvar, made his stomach flip just a little bit.
