I missed week 5 since I was on a plane all day Sunday and was incredibly jet lagged the next few days after. But I'm back, and here are my thoughts from week 6.
1. Hope for the Vikings?- After winning the "Desperation Bowl" Sunday over the Cowboys the Vikings are holding on to what little chance they may have to rebound and finish with a playoff birth. Their changes were increased Sunday when division Rivals Bears, Packers, and Lions all lost. And with a big game against an injury plagued Green Bay team next week, It is likely that the Vikings can move up to second place in the division right behind the Bears. As for the Cowboys, who lost again and watched as the Giants and Eagles win yet again, have been all but completely left out of a possible playoff shot. Many NFL experts comment that Jerry Jones should start looking for Wade Philips replacement now. And as soon as the season ends for the Cowboys, waist no time firing Philips. And many have thrown Bill Cowhers name out there as a possibility. But with the Panthers also likely to cut ties with Jon Fox, perhaps Cowher will consider a coaching job with the Panthers and stay much closer to home?
2. Other Coaches in the Hot seat- Despite getting their first win on Sunday, the 49ers will most likely part ways with Mike Singletary. Singletary is a great motivational speaker and a players coach, but his lack of being an X's and O's coach and a miss handling of many key issues this season has shown that perhaps Mike was always best suited for being just an assistant. Tom Cable is also most likely going to get the axe this off season. Though the Chiefs, Chargers, and Broncos all loss as well Sunday and the Raiders still only 1 and 1/2 games back from the division leader, we haven't witnessed enough consistancy from this team to show us they have what it takes to grab the division by the horns and run away with it, and their win last week over the Chargers proves that they have what it takes to do so in a weak division. Speaking of AFC West, Norv Turner is behind the 8 ball as the Chargers continue to underwhelm this season. We're seeing what I've always known from Norv, he's one hell of an offensive Coordinator, I would hire him to run my offense any day, but as a head coach, he just doesn't have what it takes. And we'll most likely see an end to his tenure in San Diego once the season comes to an end.
3. Will the Real NFC Elite please Stand Up?- There is no question who the top teams in the AFC are. The NFC on the other hand is just one mess of a conference. The Packers were on top of the world in the NFC, then injuries sent them spirling out of control, the Falcons this past week were praised as possibly being the best, then loose a big game against Philadelphia, the Giants who stunk it up for several weeks bringing question to if this team can make it to the playoffs is now back as a top team. For now however the Eagles have emerged and in my opinion is currently the NFC best, showing now that they can win regardless of who's at QB. The Saints of last season finally arrived this year with their first convincing victory of the season. Was Sundays performance a fluke, or are they going to make a solid run from this point on? I feel the NFC will be one big roller coaster the rest of the year.
SHOUT OUT PLAYERS: Deion Branch- After a poor run in Seattle, Branch returns to New England where in his first game he had 9 catches for 93 yards including a pivotal reception which helped set up the Patriots game winning field goal over the Ravens. It's as if he never left.
Brett Favre- True his performance Sunday wasn't anything grand, but Sunday's game wasn't about putting up big numbers for Favre, it was about bouncing back from controversy, alligations, injuries, and criticism to show that when the chips were down, he reminds the world why the Vikings wanted him to come back. And when Favre needed to lead his team to a victory, despite all the injuries and distractions going on, he managed to pull through and keep the Vikings hopes of turning their season around alive for at least another week.

Not really surprised though because of one Alex Smith. You half to be at his face to make him play better even though the 49ers won last week, I feel that his job is still in jeopardy too.

If the 49ers miss the playoffs this year, both coach and QB will be gone. Alex Smith seems to have a very hard time reading defenses. that's why in my opinion he throws so many interceptions and run into sacks! yes, running into a sack. I hope the 49ers trade for a more viable QB in the free agency market... unless they can draft someone like a Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco....

I agree with both of you on Singletary and Smith. Short of winning out the rest of their season to make a miraculous playoff appearance after starting 0-5 which no team in NFL history has ever done, I don't see either of them coming back next year. Smith is playing bad. But is just baaaarely doing enough to keep from being benched, throwing for 4 touchdowns to one INT the past two weeks after a chew out by Singletary, and after the crowd booed him two weeks in a row and chanting "We Want Carr!" believe me, I want Carr as well. We know that Smith isn't the future of this team. They should put Carr in, see what he can do. After his stint in New York he played well enough where I was convinced he has what it takes to be a good starter in the league. Probably not a pro bowler, but still a good starter. Drastic times calls for drastic measures, the fans want Carr, I say give them Carr. Singletary had no problems the past two seasons benching O'Sullivan and Hill (Hill who has outplayed Smith before getting hurt in Detroit) So why the hesitation to bench Smith who leads the league in INT?
On another QB note, I have to give Props to Colt McCoy and his first game on Sunday. Many people thought he would be creamed and play like crap against a tough Pittsburgh defense. But in his first NFL start Colt played really well, not great, but for a rookie in his first start against a scary Steelers Defense, I think he went beyond everyone's expectations, and has, for the time being, won the right to remain the Browns starter for at least another week.

Not sure Colt should be left out there to play as the starter for the rest of the year but he didn't do bad.
The 49ers need a Quarter back badly Smith is a second string, and Carr isn't going to be an answer.
The Saints need to show us something other than a passing game before they can be elite, but I agree that the Eagles are a real team. However I think the Redskins are on the up and up now.

Maybe Colt can handle the pressure of starting the rest of the year, maybe not. He managed himself pretty well against the Steelers, some rookie QB's develop better on the sidelines as a back up for a season or two, others by being in the game from day one, like Braddford for the St. Louis Rams. I would like to see more of what Colt can do, we'll have to see in the weeks to come.
Carr may not be the answer in San Francisco, but I believe he is the better option at QB right now. Is Singletary going to have to chew Smith out every game to get him to play better, are the fans going to have to boo him and chant "We Want Carr!" every game to get Smith to play at a more respectable level? All I'm saying is Smith had his shot, and to me he failed. Carr has what it takes to be a starter in the NFL, I'm convinced of that, is he good enough to be the answer in San Francisco? That's why they need to bench Smith now, Play Carr and see what he can do for this team. If he plays as well as I know he can, I say keep him and have him compete for the starting job next season. If not, then they should fire Singletary, get rid of Smith, and either draft a new young QB or bring in another experienced QB through free agency.
I agree that after last Sunday the Eagles are probably emerged as the #1 team in the NFC. Now that they have shown they can win with either Kolb or Vick. The Redskins are also a top team in the NFC, and should be in playoff contention the rest of the way through. Sunday we've seen a glimmer of the Superbowl Winning Saints team from last season, but it was against a questionable Buccaneers team. We'll need to see the Saints against tougher opponents to see if they have truely found themselves, or if it was just a one time great performance against a bad team.
