Essays are do tomorrow, and people have been pushing me to do section leader, so here is a little bit about me, tell me what you think and if I would be a good section leader.

-im very good at my instrument
-i taught someone who never played trumpet how to not only play, but love the instrument and marching band
-i love marching band and playing in general
-at the eighth grade rehearsals, instead of sitting with the leads, i sat inbetween the incoming freshman and helped them get comfortable with the music, answer there questions, and get to know them better
-my favorite thing in the world is helping struggling players and watching them succeed
-i strongly believe that while the music is important, forming a family and having fun within the section is the key to making marching band a great time

those would be points I would highlight in my essay.............tell me what you guys think

But yeah. In all seriousness, you should get it, because just about no one in marching bands, (as I've observed) are as deserving as you.

Haven't met our marching band, but I guess I have nothing to lose.

UPDATE: Well I spaced out and I wrote my essay, by hand, but forgot it at school to find out he wanted it typed and emailed to him. Then to add, when I got home, I spaced AGAIN, and didn't type up an essay. I guess I'm not getting section leader.

Personally, I don't see how writing a better essay than someone else makes you a better leader than them.
My band picks section leaders by the same qualities you listed in your points above but not by writing them out...especially since my director would lose them all and just have to pick by hand anyway.

I'm sorry you lost your essay and stuff, though. There's always next year. biggrin

We have an entire audition process, no essay. The only thing similar is drum majors have an interview.

We have an entire audition process, no essay. The only thing similar is drum majors have an interview.

Our drum major nominees have to train for a few months, and then get to tryout on the four days of marching band tryouts at the end of the school year. Then the whole band votes, and our director picks the best candidate based on their performance and vote count.
I don't actually know how section leaders works, I think it's more of one of those 'you just know' sort of things, at least for smaller sections like mine. xD;

Oour DM audition is pretty tiresomeXD We do all student staff in one night, starting from the time school ends(this year we ended at around 10pm.) TYhis is after the student staff training that begins aroudn the start of concert season.

Auditions start with everybody doing a music audition. We have to pllay a few scales, which we don't know until the judges tell us in the audition, do sightreading, and perform two pieces that we have been preparing. This is in a private room with just the judges.
If you are trying for anything except drum major, you can leave rigth after your music audition. If you are doing dm, you have to wait until everyone is done. then our bD comes in and tells which of those who said they were auditioning for dm willl be moving on to conducting. If you are not good at playing, you get cut off the boat.
After everyone is done with conducting auditions, we have another cut period. The finalists go into the interview. Results are posted for all student staff the following monday(usually ddone on a friday)

So it is all based on skill and confidence. The questions asked in the interview are extremely difficult. Who do you think would make dm, what makes you the best for the job, stuff like that. Stuff that makes you think hard and answer with honesty. They are looking for both honesty and confidence, which makes it the hardest part of the entire audition.

you might want to mention how while you still can be fun you can also be a leader and be serious and take charge in your section

i'm trumpet section leader from a band whose director was in drum corps so we're kinda intense lol
