San Francisco has had a rough QB battle going on the past few years. Bouncing back and forth between J.T. O'Sullavin, Alex Smith, and Shaun Hill, the 49ers have seen promise in their QBs, but not enough to convince them that any one should be the official starter.
Enter David Carr, a former #1 overall pick for the Texans, who never got the fair shot he deserved being on a poor expansion team that allowed more sacks than any other team in the league. After serving as back up to Eli in N.Y. Carr now comes to the Bay to see if he can finally prove he is the good QB Houston thought he was.
Carr was signed by the 49ers for a 2 year contract, and a back up, but head coach Mike Singletary says that the QB battle this off season is open and the possition is clear for the taking for any QB who can prove they can lead the team.
So who should the 49ers go with as their starting QB in 2010?

Nate Davis is the better Quarterback than Smith in last preseason.
David Carr is another good Quarterback and better than Alex Smith.
I like Davis to start.

Carr did pretty well in like limited playing time with the Giants. He never really got a true starting shot with a decent team. I think he might win the job, but who knows? For all we can tell, the 49ers better hope that they don't end up with two #1 overall pick QB busts...

Play whoever. Get to the playoffs with whoever gives you the best chance to win. Start Nate Davis 2011.
That's my plan!

Well Shawn Hill is now out of this QB battle.
With the pick up of David Carr, the 49ers have decided to trade Shawn Hill to the Detroit Lions for a 7th round draft pick.
For the moment it seems like Nate Davis will be brought up from the practice squad to be the 49ers third string QB, while Smith and Carr battle it out for the starting job this off season.

Nate Davis never played in a regular season game, but he was spectacular in preseason.

Current word comming from head coach Mike Singletary is that as of right now Alex Smith will start, but he also said he wants Carr to put the heat on and make Smith play better. Carr said he welcomes the challenge to try and out-perform Smith and earn the starting roll.
Though Nate Davis will still compete for a roster spot, the word around the team practice field seems to indicate this is pre-dominantly a Smith/Carr battle. Which personally I hope Carr wins and starts, I always had faith in him being a good starting QB in this league, and got stuck on an expansion Texans team which gave up 248 sacks his first 5 seasons there. And when he stepped in to fill for Eli Manning last season for the Giants, he did a good job moving the ball up and down the field. If the 49ers can boost their offensive line, and Vernon Davis breaking out last season, and if Crabtree continues to develope after his good showing his rookie year, I think Carr can make something out of his rough and dissapointing career.
Extra Point: David Carr is also from California, so the possability of starting for a California team really has him excited.

David Carr was born in Bakersfield and went to college in Fresno while Smith was born in Washington and went to school in SoCal then Utah.
That's some huge distances.
Anyway, early reports from Nancy Gay say the 49ers and Scot McCloughan will be parting ways due to personal reasons. It is said the split was mutual.

I just hope the new GM knows what he's doing, and has a plan for the draft 1 month from now.

Well head coach Mike Singletary came out and said even though there will be a competition between QBs this off season, It will not be for the #1 QB spot.
Singletary has put all of his chips in on Smith as the 49ers starting QB next season, and even told Carr in a private meeting that he will be starting the season as the #2 backup.
"Iron strengthens Iron" Singletary said, Carr is in there to help push Smith and make him stronger and better.
However, I still believe that even if Smith opens the season as the starter, Singletary has pulled his starters and replaced them if they fail to play where he wants them to be. Two seasons ago he benched starter J.T. O'Sullivan for Hill, and last year he benched Hill for Smith. And I think it is a good possability that if Smith doesn't perform, then he will just as easily be benched for Carr.

After the second day of voluntary practice, the biggest impact and most noticable performance has been the repor Alex Smith has developed with Michael Crabtree. In the teams first 11 on 11 drills between the offense and defense, Smith completed his first 4 passes to Crabtree. The two were also seen walking on and off the field togeather during practice.
Carr has gotten minimal reps with the first string offense, and while the 49ers staff still claims that Smith is the man who will start, Others still can tell that there is still a QB battle going on, even on a miniscule level.
At this point Smith is the projected starting QB, Crabtree, who led all Rookie receivers last season in average yards per game with 53, despite missing his first 5 games last season is penciled in as the #1 receiver, 3rd year pro Josh Morgan, who led the team last season with 52 catches is currently the #2 receiver. And Vernon Davis, who tied an NFL record last season for most TD catches by a Tight End in a season will be back looking for a strong follow up to his Pro Bowl season.
