Well it never says 'thou shalt not do drugs', there is a verse about not doing something when you know it's wrong, another about treating your body as a temple, adn a third about obeying the laws of the country, if they don't interfere with being a Christian. Therefore using drugs for medicinal purposes is fine, getting addicted is not.

I'm assuming you mean illegal drugs. Weed, crack, etc. A Christian's body is a temple, and should be treated as such. Furthermore, our bodies are not our own. They were purchased with the blood of Jesus. If I were to damage it with drugs, or cutting, or what have you, it would be like damaging someone else's stuff.
Normal medicinal drugs are fine. Even God Himself put Adam to sleep when he took the rib to make Eve.
Drugs making you more spiritual has no real weight in the issue. There are plenty of things you can do to get close to God, and they are outlined in the scriptures. Anything else... I remember a story in the old testament about two men who were struck down for worshipping in ways God did not allow. I'll see if I can't find it. The Old Testament doesn't come to mind as easy as the New for me.

I could bet you that Jesus did marijuanna.
Almost everyone at that time did.

When I was a Christian, I was always told that doing drugs was a sin. But, then again, the branch of Christianity I was raised in taught that pretty much everything is a sin...

I believe the biblical basis against drug use is that you're not supposed to be intoxicated, which you can argue covers both alcohol and drugs. Also, you're not supposed to harm yourself or kill yourself, and some drugs are rather harmful and can lead to death.

Personally, I'm not a Christian so I say that if certain drugs make you more spiritual, go for it. But I doubt many Christians would agree.

Firstly, why is alcohol (and I have no idea why alcohol is not labelled a drug ) fine then? Secondly

Alcohol is considered a drug.
It's just not illegal.
Technically, soda and coffee are both drugs because they have caffeine, so...

Yep, those are drugs too. Why the hell does it matter if it's illegal or not. Pot, for example, is much more mild than alcohol. What the hell does what your government tells you have to do with your religion?

Actually, if you have Native-American beliefs, you are allowed to grow and smoke marijuana for religious purposes.

I think you're mistaking peyote for marijuana. Not quite the same thing. Plus you actually have to be a registered Native American (and a particular tribe) to even claim to use that for religious reasons in order to be legally exempt in the US.

I thought they were.
Sorry.
But to everyone else, peyote is illegal, isn't it?

Yep, and from what I understand it's mostly due to its endangered status in Mexico and restrictions for tribal only (though from what I've read it's only on paper) in the US.

*nods* That's how I've always understood it. There's definitely a lot of fine lines with this question, especially when most things in excess will end up hurting you.

Where did you get that from?

Quote:
Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
Acts 20:28 (NKJV)

You see, God purchased the Church with his blood. A church is not a building. Rather, it is the sons and daughters of God. We as Christians are those sons and daughters.

Quote:
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.
1 Cor 3:16-17 (NKJV)

God dwells in us. Our bodies are His temples.

Alcohol is fine. There's nothing wrong with it. There's even a verse in which the Apostle encourages one of the younger preachers to drink wine for his stomach problem. But drunkenness is not acceptable.
Quote:

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
Eph 5:18 (NKJV)

I highly doubt it.

And that is a big over generalization
