My religion teaches that the gift of tongues is being able to speak a foreign language or anotehr language other than your native tongue (like a person who speaks english learning how to speak spanish), and yes we believe that it is a very real gift because we have thousands of missionaries all over the world that use the gift. It's nothing like the gregorian chanting and gibberish sounding things( that's what it sounds like to me) that mainline Christianity teaches about.

No, as a person who studies classical languages... speaking in 'tongues' is just superstitious gibberish. The Pythia used to do this as well, aka, the Oracle of Delphi while she was high on opiates. Then it would be translated into the most ridiculous omens.

That's what I always heard, too, that it referred to speaking other languages. There are some groups who do the whole talking gibberish thing to put themselves into a trance state, but they know they're not literally speaking any language.

It has always freaked me out when people started praying in the chant like gibberish. Their faces would be blank or contorted along with their bodies. One time I had asked some one who was praying like that what they had said and they couldn't answer me, which is why I know they aren't really speaking in a real language.

@In Medias- So would you consider some one who can speak, read, etc. in multiple languages some one who is gifted with tongues, like how my religion views it? Or is being multi-lingual a totally different concept?

Speaking in tongues =/ speaking in a real language, that's the difference.
I'm multi-lingual, others know what I'm saying, it's not my own made up language.

Oh damn that such sweet skepticism of mine.

Definition
of
glossolalia
n. Fabricated and nonmeaningful speech, especially such speech associated with a trance state or certain schizophrenic syndromes.

It's a pretty common psychological effect on members of different religions as well as the secular individuals.

If youre really interested in that, Ben, look it up futher, but more for the Psychology of it.

Ahhh, memories as a Christian...

"Speaking in tongues" as in foreign language makes more sense to me than "speaking in tongues" as in a secret language with you and God. Aside from the science of it, it never made sense to me why people would openly use their secret language with a deity in public. It seemed like more of an attention getter than about faith.

In short, no I don't believe in speaking in tongues in the popular sense.

Off topic: I thought the Oracle of Delphi huffed some sort of gas in the area to divine. Either way, she was getting high. I should quit watching tripe "history" shows.

Did you know that opiates were widely used in Greece and that not everything you hear on the history channel is accurate?

I think I should go make a thread about this in the spa section. I think we need to share our stories about the crapumentaries.

My church teaches that it is, my mom does it, and I do it when His Spirit moves me. I'd check out a church that believes in it, because they'll be able to tell you a lot about it, and you can really expeience it. Then you can judge for yourself. ^_^
