Well, commercial ferts can be bad for the environment and they cost money. They can also be confusing as to dosing and such. I use water from my fish tanks to fertilize my plants. I also dump all the water from my tank changes outside where it can be of use as opposed to down the drain where it becomes a burden on the septic system. My plants grow very fast with their weekly dose of fish water. And you should see the patches of grass where I dump the water outside. There's a clear difference because the grass there is a lot higher than everywhere else.
What do you all use for fertilizer and what are your opinions on the different types?

This winter I want to experiment with planting rye as a green manure. The most i'll do is add in some compost and manure every spring. Otherwise I've yet to really bother with additional fertilizers.
