Lions retire missing boater Smith's No. 93 for 2009 season

Before his number was retired by the Lions, Corey Smith's family established the Corey D. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, based in Richmond, Va. More ... RICHMOND, Va. -- The Detroit Lions are retiring the No. 93 jersey for the upcoming season in memory of defensive lineman Corey Smith, who disappeared when a boat capsized off the Florida coast.
Smith, a free agent who played the past three seasons with Detroit, is one of three men who went missing off the Gulf Coast after their 21-foot fishing boat capsized in rough seas three weeks ago.
Galen Duncan of the Lions' front office announced the one-year retirement of Smith's jersey number at a memorial service Saturday in Smith's hometown of Richmond, Va.
Several hundred mourners, including Smith's former teammates from the NFL, North Carolina State and high school, attended the service.
Smith's high school coach, Kevin Burden, says he prays for a guardian angel who wears the number 93.

The Raiders may follow this up, by doing the same with Cooper.

Dude-LAP Bold move by the Lions, respecting Smith and his family. The Raiders may follow this up, by doing the same with Cooper. I thought it was a very classy move and the proper move. Raiders should do the same thing. But who knows with Al Davis. The League should allow their friends to be able to wear a sticker with those numbers on it if they want to.

Raiders should do the same thing. But who knows with Al Davis. The League should allow their friends to be able to wear a sticker with those numbers on it if they want to. Yeah, that might be a good idea. Something similar was put on some players' helmets/jerseys when Sean Taylor of the Redskins was killed.

And I think the Raiders will wear GU (Gene Upshaw) for a while more, too.
