As any crafter I'm prone to dumping all my finds into a box or 7 to revisit at a later date to use in a craft project...and of course I completely forget I have it.
Recent examples: a lump of pure copper bigger than my thumb, no clue where it came from; A pair of earrings that are black rubber castings of human vertebrae; several small brass colored skeleton key charms; a box of roughly $200 worth of curtains and brocade upholstery fabrics (ironic since I can't sew); and a hand-crank pasta machine.
Anyone else prone to finding closet oddities?

The "to use in crafting later" items usually go in a bag that never quite manages to get put away, or in a set of drawers in the closet. Nothing particularly steampunky, although I am used to asking myself "wait, when did I put this in here?"
I also found a still sealed package of chocolate poptarts that I'd hidden myself. Too bad I was so successful at hiding them, that they had expired. Not much could be done with it biggrin
I should go check the drawers and bags again, will report anything interesting. Well, anything interesting that is still on topic.

Most things I find are interesting, but nothing I'd like to destroy or paint or anything of the sort. Most of the old junk is exactly that, junk... wish I had your closet full of useful things

Alas, my wardrobes (which are actually odd fabric things) have nought in the way of oddities.
The latest odd thing I've found is this bizarre wooden ball, with four cones attached (brightly painted, clearly part of a toy). I'm currently trying to turn it into an odd gizmo of sorts (spare christmas tree light bulbs work well). 'twas donated to the Toy Library where I work.

... toy library? Most, most intriguing, sir... twisted
But, most definitely prone to finding closet (... and desk-draw, and under-the-bed-storage, and other like places) oddities, even though they tend to be of the cog-and-jewelry variety. Yay for finding little boxes here and there of various parts that were formerly lost and presumed accidentally thrown away! XD *cough* But... yah... they're still sitting there, though, have no idea what to do with the various things, and the pile keeps growing. sweatdrop I can't help it, though! I see the poor, broken bits of things sitting on the tables at flea markets cheap, and see their possibilities, but get home and promptly lose them! XD
But your vacuum tubes and cardboard bits sound quite interesting... add a few buckles and bit of leather (or material of your choosing, if you don't like leather XD ), and you'd have a fine thing to wear on your back. XD (... if the tubes are what I imagine they look like, at least XD )

If I could but show you all my basement.
I am a member of an entire family if geeks. This means we have moved through a great number of strange and crafty hobbies from bicycle building to model rocketry to antique radio refurbishing to sewing and beading and weaving. My uncle did violin carving for a while! You can imagine the sorts of stuff I've got hanging around.
I'm still trying to come up with the perfect SP prop on which to use the ten-speed gear shift assembly.
Which reminds me... if you see old bikes in peoples' garbage, pick 'em up! They are a wonderful source for many fun bits of metal!
Berz.

That's me. I have tons of charms, gears, clock pieces, string, ribbon, fabric, and other random stuff I've collected over the years. I make lots of costumes and hats. I'm making goggles right now, and a lot of metal pieces and springs and gears sitting around. They will make me an awesome pair of goggles.

I always have junk lying around, and unfortunately I live in a small 1 bedroom apartment with my girlfriend, and I only have 2 closets, one of which I have to use for actual clothes, so most of my junk is lying around in boxes in my bedroom. Lately I've been getting a real itch to just chuck it all out in the dumpster, since most of it is stuff I never wanted in the first place (I'm the relative that everyone gives their junk to when they don't have the heart to toss it in the garbage). None of it's very interesting or useful, mostly things like screws, bits of old toys and nonworking electronic gadgets from the late 90s. I keep thinking I might have a use for some of it some day, but I'm not electrically inclined enough to repair any of it.
Once I get rid of that stuff, I'll have room for actually useful (or at least interesting) junk. I'm gonna hit up every thrift shop, resale shop, pawn shop, flea market and garage sale I can find here in Dallas.
Maybe there's something plastic in my closet/boxes I can spray paint...

oooo i love discovering buried treasure in the closet/basement/other storage areas!
as of now, I know pretty much everthing in my closet.... and aside from a microscope and some vintage roller skates, its not so interesting. The first time I cleaned it out on the other hand.... was an interesting experience! I found some stuff from the Korean war that was my grandfathers .... a hat and a South Korean flag and alot of needlepoint bits that are fun.
our family's basement(and some parts of the house) are always sources of finding crazy things....like old posters and buttons.... and a oil train lamp...there was a lathe (but that got sold in the garage sale)
in another closet I found tons of old pictures.... some dating back to the late 1800's fun stuff ;D

I was just thinking, it would probably help my closet be more interesting if I had more interesting relatives. Seems like most of you here have relatives that were in wars, or traveled to foreign lands, or worked some strange job or had some unusual hobby. Plus, my relatives are stingy and the only time I get junk from them is after they sell all the good stuff!
Anything that's in my closet was intentionally put there by yours truly, or at least, mine truly (but most of the junk in there is mine, not hers). Maybe there's some interesting junk I forgot about.....

I can't say that I keep any sorta scraps or gadgets in my closet, but cloths is another story. I just came across some cloths that I haven't tried on or seen in a while, including some lace tops that still had their tags on them. I also occasionally keep ribbon and I found recently clothing patterns that I bought to make some corsets with. I moved all my stuff recently so yeah, there sure was a lot of stuff I didn't know I had.
