The early spring evening had begun cool and crisp, fine weather to hunt and do what a Sentinel in Brushfyre's lofty position must. Which is sleep in and wait for his wife to peck him awake.

Snoring softly, Brushfyre nestled his head further down on to his chest, and sighed gustily. He was having such marvelous dreams, ones where he ruled the forest- not the brigadier.

Tynder sat glaring at Brushfyre, how much longer was he going to sit there and snore? She looked outside and saw that the moon was already rising into the sky. Feeling anxious she wanted her mate to wake up, today was the day to start making their nest. Looking over her shoulder she saw that Brushfyre was still snoring, glaring she hopped over and gave him a harsh peck with her beak.

Snorting awake with the theatrics of a Sentinel that is used to this happenstance, Brushfyre murmured gruffly to his wife that he would be on his way.

In a moment. With practiced care, Brushfyre yawned, and exited their roost, barely opening his eyes and still snoring softly. Steam rushed along a branch of the tree, peering up at Brushfyre with a dopey expression on his face, some soft moss in his paws. Brushfyre started, and realized just what day it was. Fearing for his safety, Brushfyre leapt to the sky, and began searching for the materials.

Tynder was not going to be happy with him, leaving the nest so late.

Sighing with relief that the nest building was finally underway, Tynder carefully began the important task of cleaning away old tree leaves and debris. As dirt flew from the roosts opening Tynder hoped that Brushfyre would hurry back. The need to have the nest done as soon as possible was very important to her. Glowering at some leftover pellets she shuffled those out the entrance with a huff.

Brushfyre grumbled to himself the entire way to the moss patch to the left of their main roost, knowing that Tynder would want him to get the best building materials, no matter how long it took him.

Scratch that, she wanted it done NOW and Brushfyre busied himself getting the moss together, pecking at it fairly uselessly. He cursed his inability to us his will, but the moss was not going to beat him, will or not. Whistling shrilly, Brushfyre called his fleet of Skurri, and they neatly removed the softest moss from the patch and scurried, as it were, to his roost.

"Drat that woman," Brushfyre said wearily, and set about his next task.

With the last of the pellet debris gone from the roost, Tynder walked out unto the entrances perch. She whistled shrilly and was pleased to see her call answered promptly. A small chirop lighted on a branch near its mistress and it looked at Tynder expectantly.
"Crimson please go assist Brushfyre in gathering the nest materials. Make sure you select materials that are soft and dry." Tynder said with an authoritative voice. Without hesitation Crimson nodded and took flight, disappearing into the night.
Moments later Tynder heard the arrival of Brushfyre's skurri as they clambered up the tree.

Brushfyre scowled at Crimson, annoyed his mate had to check up on him. So the Chirop would be helpful in gathering the building supplies, so what. He didn't want to work on it in the first place, it would end up just like-

Bruushfyre shook his head, clearing his mind from the dangerous thoughts. Perhaps he was going soft in his age, for the memories of the days long past had ceased to bother him, but the idea of starting a new family was bringing them all back again.

Taking flight once more, Brushfyre barged in to his roost, hooting to Tynder. Well, at her was more like it, but Brushfyre wasn't about to cut pinfeathers.

"Do I have to build the nest? I've some gatherers that owe me favours..."

Brushfyre's voice warbled piteously. He was in a sad state, moss covering his wings.

Tynder turned on Brushfyre as her feathers puffed up with her distaste to what she had just heard.

"How dare you even say such a thing! You know how important this is to me. And if for one moment you think you can dump this one on one of your "favors" well think again buster. You march right back outside and continue gathering for our nest. If you so much as put a talon out of line, I will know."

As if to prove her point Crimson made a timely appearance at the entrance. She placed some soft dry moss at her mistresses feet.

Clicking her beak Tynder walked up to Brushfyre and removed some of the moss from his feathers. "These are satisfactory, you'll do just fine." She nuzzled her head into his feathers then turned and began carefully placing the new moss bits.

Brushfyre turned around, but not before an entirely childish expression filled his face, making him look like a nattering ninny. Which is what he thought of his mate at the moment, but what could he do? She was mad, plum stark raving MAD.

"It will get done FASTER. And you know me, I'm hopeless. The Skurris aren't even that much help, look at the sorrowful lot."

Brushfyre gestured with his wing, as a Skurri, his hands full of moss, ran in to one of the walls of the roost. And kept trying to move forward.

"The ones I keep are barely able to breathe and run at the same time."

Tynder scoffed "Don't be daft, your skurri are perfectly capable of performing the tasks you ask, and if you feel they are really that incompetent I will have Crimson supervise them." Frustrated she began preening her feathers but soon looked up again and quipped, "I don't care how long it takes for you to find the nesting supplies but you will go out tonight, and help me complete this nest!"

With that said she began to shuffle Brushfyre and his Skurri's out of the roost. "Crimson!" Tynder screeched, "Make sure my husband does his job!"

Brushfyre let himself be bustled out of the roost. He was inexplicably happy to get as far away from Tynder, then remembered why.

"Ah yes, she's mental," Brushfyre confided in the nearest Skurri, who looked at him blankly, "Skurri, I hope that when your mate is brooding, you are far far away. I can even arrange it. For I am your god."

Brushfyre cackled menacingly and wearily. His mates sudden mood swings, from simply irritable to full on crazy. Not only was she making Crimson spy on him, which was usual, she was letting him know that she was spying, which was unusual.

Collecting more moss, Brushfyre wearily gave in to his task, but whistled for his prizes. The two Skurri's, liquid fast in their movement, hustled down the tree branch, arguing as they came. They stopped suddenly in front of Brushfyre, awaiting his command.

"My mate wants moss. Not only does she want moss, she wants the best moss. How you interpret which moss is the best, I haven't the foggiest. Do your best."

"Aye boss," The two Skurris clambered down the tree, and Brushfyre smiled contentedly, fluffing up his feathers.

He wasn't going to let anyone take away his prizes from him, and he wasn't about to let them get eaten. This task was simple enough, and safe enough.

Sighing Tynder was very glad that the roost was empty. She hopped out onto a branch and began hopping to some of the higher limbs. She was very proud of this tree. Her mate had selected it when they first arrived in the forest and it was strong and sturdy.

Smiling to herself she felt proud that through the complaining she could always rely on her mate. And thats exactly what she wanted for her little ones. Selecting some sturdy twigs she took her prizes and returned to the beginnings of the nest. Carefully weaving them together she hummed softly as she worked.

The two Skurris, as yet unnamed, scurried down the trunk of the tree, searching for the moss. Finding it, they gathered as much of it as they could, and brought it back to Brushfyre, who made his other Skurri, a veritable army of them, bring it back to Tynder.

Brushfyre tried to think ahead; what else could his mental mate want for her nest?

"She would say our nest, but that's because she doesn't want to be blamed when it all goes to shambles."

The Skurri, who seemed to have some unnatural fixation with Brushfyre, chattered happily.

Selecting some of her soft down feathers Tynder began placing them among the twigs and moss of the slowly growing nest. As she continued to sing to herself she heard the familiar flutter of Crimson lighting on the entrance. Tynder turned and took the twigs from the chirops mouth.

"Do you have anything to report?"she said sternly.

Shaking her small head Crimson replied, "No, Mistress. Alls well."

Nodding her approval she gestured for Crimson to leave for more supplies.
She sighed as she felt her stomach rumble. Realizing she hadn't eaten since the previous night she put her final touches on the nest and took wing into the night.

Brushfyre had decided that he had wasted enough of the evening searching for building supplies, and he whistled to his two prize Skurri. Sleek and Svelte, they raced along the branches as Brushfyre flew ahead, only stopping at the edge of their territory.

An old, dry hunk of a tree was propped against a newer living one, ivy choking and concealing the entrance of Brushfyre's secret roost, the one he used for his Keeper work.

He kept it a little messy, he thought of it almost like a bachelor pad. He never told Tynder where it was, as he would rather keep it to himself. Not to mention that it was rigged as a perfect nest for young Sentinels, though Brushfyre used it to raise his crowd of Skurri.

It was all he could do to keep Crimson from coming inside.
