"Good evening and this is DJ Night Owl," a rich voice projects into the mic. The prerecording of an owl hooting is played.

The studio room was silent, with the exception of the hum of electronics and the dj himself. Most of the room was in shadow, save the glow of his monitor and the warm halogen in the corner. He liked it like this, even though most people who worked here preferred all the lights on. It made sense, since he was one of the few people in the building. That and it seemed right to welcome the darkness into the room when he was working the night shift. The owl hoot was long and lonely, but he liked it. It suited him nicely.

"I hope all you early birds are off to bed, because we're going to be cranking up the tunes for the wild things of the night." This time the sounds of crickets and wolves howling are played. The voice laughed as the noises are mixed with some background music. It is an eery, but enticing blend of sounds. One of the reasons this DJ had his position was his captivating voice. He knew how to work the mic and knew just what his listeners would tune in to.

"It's a quarter to midnight and the moon is high. I've got Mettalica, Disturbed and Incubus on the way. A little later we'll be doing a pop quiz to earn some tickets to a concert at the WOW Hall and maybe even take a call or two just for the hell of it. So stay tuned. This is the Night Life with DJ Night Owl, here on K.I.D.K." Then the stations intro played before segueing into commercials.

Icy blues eyes looked up from the computer and the sound board to see the supervisor behind glass give the thumbs up. He was clear for a minute or two. The man at the mic pushed it from his mouth and took a sip of the soda he had hidden beneath his counter. It didn't matter what his bosses said to dissuade him, working as a DJ really dried out the voice box. And he'd be damned if he was going to go the night without getting a hit of sugar and caffeine

"How long we got?" he asked as he pushed his bleached white hair from his face. It was always in the way, he thought. Maybe it was time to get it cut.

"ninety seconds," was the answer.

"Perfect," was the reply as the man turned to his computer and the ever changing playlist. His smile was a devious one, but he tried to keep it toned down so his supervisors wouldn't see. They always hated it when he tried to deviate from the schedule.

"Nemo is going to love this," he murmured. The smile grew despite himself. Sometimes he was a serious a**, this being one of those times. In his defense though, his roommate really did make it too easy.

"Get ready Palian," he heard in his headset. He waved the guy behind the glass as he typed furiously. "We're on in ten."

"Welcome back. This is DJ Night Owl and while we were away we got a most interesting special request. Guy needs help with his lady folks. He's having trouble setting the mood," Palian said in his most smooth and innocent voice.

"So let's see if we can't up the tension so our man Nemo can have some action in his night life. Here's Nine Inch Nails, I want to F**k you like an animal," he finished with a flourish. He started the song and turned off the mic in one smooth movement.

"I'm so good. If he doesn't get laid when she hears this. . . " he chuckled. He tapped his foot as the song filled the room.

Filling out the last bit of paper work for the evening the young woman set her pen aside. Orders for the next month filled out, the calendar was done, everything was going decently smoothly. Stretching she looked around the small office above her coffee shop. It was the weekend, that meant more late nights, but she was long since use to it. Looking at the clock she changed the speakers in the building to her favorite night show. The tunes played seemed to satisfy her late night customers. If her regulars like it then she did to.

Putting away some files she set up her office for the next day. Taking once last glance at the photo's on her desk. It was herself, her mother, and older brother just a few summers ago. How she missed them, and how she wished they could see her now. Smiling to herself she grabbed her apron and headed down stairs.

Slipping off her jacket she hung it up in the back of the kitchen and slipped on the apron. Walking out to the front of the shop she saw the place was very lively. Her friend Fyte was a lovely waitress, Tsukiko was so thankful to have the girl working for her. Her kindness really helped out with the customers, without her the place would seem a lot more depressing and dark. Tsukiko wanted a cool place, some place the college kids could just come hang. It was this or the clubs around town, and this place was certainly gaining popularity.

"I'm going to get started on tomorrow's order's if you need a hand come get me kay." Heading back to the kitchen Tsukiko started get the pastries ready for tomorrow. Muffins, doughnuts, scones, cookies, and sometimes cake and pie. Breakfast or late night cravings, her sweets where the best around. Laughing slightly to herself as she got elbow deep in her doughy creations.

Then almost on que, Mr. DJ Night Owl made his ever popular reference to some, she presumed boy, names Nemo. Laughing and frowning at the same time, she felt sorry for her barista. Hey sadly shared that name, yet he put up with her listening to this channel even after she offered to changed it several times. Though even she wished the DJ would get some new material. It wasn't likely that would happen anytime soon, Mr. Night Owl seemed to enjoy referencing the other Nemo to much.

Setting a tray of muffins in the oven she set on her next task. Never once did she question her happiness here. She loved her life here, everyday she got to get up and go to a job she loved. It was the most glamorous, but it was hers.

Even though it was her coffee shop, Tsukiko much preferred to working in the back. Socializing and making the customers happy up front...not her forte. Instead she left that to Fyte and Nemo. Looking at the clock she wondered if she would make herself a cup of tea since it seem to be another sleepless night. Not that she looked liked she even need sleep. Tsukiko took very good care of herself. Sure Ryo constantly checked on her, but he could have his own family any time. So once she was out on her own in this world, she learned to take care of herself and only herself.

Thankfully her world brightened slightly, Fyte came around then Nemo. Sure they worked for her, but she considered them to be her friends. Then there was Ryo and Kat, whom she had known long before even owning this coffee shop. Like she said before it wasn't a glamorous life, but it was hers.

Nemo couldn't help groaning when he heard his name on the radio above his head. Normally it was just white noise during his shift, something to keep the silence of a slow moment at bay. It was only when he heard his name that he felt that familiar tension in his gut. A sign that whatever was said would only make his ulcers ache in retaliation.

It had really been an interesting twist of fate, meeting DJ Night Owl. In fact, he still didn't quite understand how he managed to get such a man as a room mate. He never understood his devious sense of humor, but he did envy that confidence. Palian was definitely someone that left an impression. He liked to play the mystery man, hence his radio alias, but when face to face he was very straightforward.

He had been struggling, as most starving college kids were apt, when he found the new age cafe. Since it was centered on the edge of a university campus, a lot of their customers were students like himself. And one of its many charms was the late hours it was open. Perfect for pulling all nighters and preping for tests. Many liked to come and enjoy a night with friends, safe from the craziness of downtown where the clubs and bars corrupted the streets. Nemo liked it here, where people could talk without yelling in ears to be heard. A place to enjoy evenings with a nice cub of joe.

It had surprised him how quickly Tsukiko had hired him, having had no prior experience as a barista, well if you didn't count his own. But he enjoyed the work, was a natural at caffeinated creations and the money made it slightly more bearable for his ever wilting bank account. That was about six months ago, and now he prided himself on being a full fledged barista.

Thankfully he was in the middle of just such an order for a customer, so the grind of the machines blocked him from hearing whatever the DJ said. However, his smile faltered at the corner when he heard the song choice. He handed the coffee to the customer and quickly looked at the rest of the room, hoping no one was looking at him in connection with it. Such a crude song, even though the cussing was censored, he blushed despite his best efforts.

"Oh god, don't let her hear it," he murmured softly a he tucked a strand of green streaked hair behind his ear. The last thing he needed was for Fyte to think he'd made such a song request. It wasn't possible he knew, there were hundreds of Nemo's in the world. Besides, he hadn't made the call. He silently damned his room mate for finding out about his crush.

It had really taken him a long time to perfect his ability to work with Fyte without tripping over things like a fool around her. Nemo didn't think she knew he liked her and he was ok with that. He wasn't all that comfortable around girls yet, having never had a girlfriend. And he wasn't about to ruin this opportunity to make a living by getting distracted so easily.

User Image"Alright! So that'll be one iced coffee, one blueberry muffin, two cranberry scones, and two hot teas, correct?" An energetic voice repeated the order back to the table of customers. After confirming and promises of a speedy return, Fyte turned around back to the kitchen. Though it was late into the night, somehow Fyte still had enough energy to be upbeat at work. Diving for plates and cups behind the counter, she heard the night show come on. Frowning at the song choice, she quietly tsk'd at the crudeness and profanity of the song. Though it wasn't quite the brunette's regular nor preferred choice of music, she was willing to tolerate it for her friend, Tsukiko.

Tsukiko was an interesting friend for Fyte. Though the country girl wasn't a part of any of Fyte's friend circles, she was considered to be one of her best friends. Almost like a sister, really. Something had drawn Fyte to Tsukiko, outside of being a civil room mate. Fyte wasn't too sure what it was, but then again, she did have a knack for making friends quite easily. She didn't bother to think about it much though; if they got along merrily, then everything was fine in Fyte's book. That was just part of how Fyte was, an easy-going girl. When Tsukiko had excitedly told her about the coffee shop purchase, Fyte had (with equal vigor) asked (or rather, demanded and pleaded) that she be a waitress. Just something about it intrigued her. That or her love for anime and Japan had gotten a bit out of hand again.

Slipping the pastries onto plates, she looked over to the barista. If she had heard correctly, the DJ had said the request came from someone named Nemo. Giving a giggle-snort, she resumed her duties. As if our Nemo would request a song like that. she thought to herself. Even though she had only met and had been working with him for six months, Fyte had a good enough sense of character to know that Nemo wasn't that kind of person to request such a song. Besides, there are other Nemos out there. It was probably one of them. Taking a short respite, she watched Nemo for a little bit. When he had first come around the shop, for some odd reason Fyte had likened him to an abandoned puppy. At least Tsukiko had agreed to hire him, otherwise the poor girl would've never heard the end of begging from Fyte. (In fact, were it not for the housing rule about animals, Fyte would've populated the room with so many pets). However, as the six months had passed, Fyte was able to see him as a man and not an animal she just wanted to cuddle. He's still really cute when he gets flustered though. she thought to herself, a grin spreading over her face. Maybe that was the reason for the budding feelings she was beginning to have for Nemo. He probably didn't know about those though; Fyte kept her secrets pretty well.

"There you go Nemo," Palian's voice resonated after the last few chords of music sounded. "We wish you luck. Now let's continue on with our regularly scheduled broadcast." He rolled his eyes as his supervisor moved frantically behind his wall of glass. It was always a fifty fifty chance that their boss would be listening. Not that he cared.

"Next we have Shoots and Ladders by Korn. Give us a howl now," he finished as he started the song.

Sometimes being a DJ was really easy. Just press play and the playlist did the rest. He had to admit that the job had its perks. He only wished he could be where Nemo was at right that moment to tape his reaction. The boy was far too sensitive and easy to tease. Or maybe innocent was a better word. Either way, Palian got his kicks tormenting the boy. He figured someone had to. Keeps the boy from getting cocky.

"Ring around the roses, pocket full of posies, ashes ashes, we all fall down" the song growled in deceptive clarity. Leave it to the rock stars to create a smash hit out of nursery rhymes. Palian smiled at the irony.

As the song finished, the next one began with a fast beating of drums. Palian leaned back in his chair, one foot tapping as he adjusted the headphones on his ears. They always seemed to fall askew while he worked.

Let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor

one, nothing wrong with me
two, nothing wrong with me
three, nothing wrong with me
four, nothing wrong with me

skin against skin, blood against bone
your all alone but your not alone
you wanted in, now your here
driven by hate, consumed by fear

Dj Night Owl wondered to how many of his listeners thought about his song choices. If they had any meaning, or if he just let play whatever met the pandora-like filter. It would be interesting to see what they thought, but he knew that many of the ones that called were quacks. People with problems that he didn't care about, or beliefs that were to crazy to offer any truth.

"That was Bodies by Drowning Pool," he announced coolly as he turned down the playlists, which had switched to its normal background tunes.

"This is Dj Night Owl with the Night Life, here on K.I.D.K. So its just after midnight, we know what that means." Palian let the sound track of a pack of wolves fill the airwaves.

"That's right listeners, you know the game. Call me with your best howl. The best and most spine tingling, realistic and spooky howl wins the chance to be a guest speaker in my next show. And remember, no recordings of your canine buddy. I want real beasties to step forward please."

There were moments, like this, when Palian really enjoyed being a dj. Hearing people call to make a fool of themselves over the air just tickled his fancy. He never really heard anyone sound spooky, save himself, but it was an easy enough game. Had to have a few of those to keep the listeners engaged after all.

Tsukiko was taking the baked goods from the oven when she heard the announcement for the contest. Smirking, she couldn't help thinking about using the caffeine high against her customers sometimes. Throwing her apron down she excited the back and went up on the stairs. Pulling her phone out she held it in her hand as she looked over the railing. "HEY EVERYONE!" She screamed and gave a loud whistle to get the shop's attention. "DJ Night Owl is having a howling contest. Who thinks we should all give it a try." Everyone looked at each other and thought about it and then sure enough a blonde haired man shot up and screamed "YEAH," sure enough after that everyone was cheering.

"Okay I'm going to call in, and if he answers I'll give the signal and then I want all of you to give you're best howl okay!" Throwing her fist in the air like she was doing a battle cry. Sure enough her customers cheered alone with her though. Laughing she opened her phone and dialed the number. Waiting through the hold she could hear people in her shop practicing and getting excited. Oh how she loved her late night caffeine addicts. Even her own heart beat sped up a little in anticipation. Putting the phone on speaker everyone listened as the DJ kept going through contestants.

The phone line opened up and she swore everyone in the shop jumped when they heard through her phone the DJ's voice. Biting her lip she held up her fingers as a countdown. 3, 2, 1, GO!

The shop was filled with the noise of howling as everyone let loose their variation of the noise. Once it was over they all burst out laughing as well as Tsukiko. Then they all heard themselves in the recording on the radio. Quiet proud of her pack of college students she listened with them and could even point herself out in the recording as the loudest as it was her holding the phone. Still the energy filled the air, and she knew everyone love their entry.

Nemo was really in gear, busting out order after order of caffenated drinks in record time. Once he got his rhythm, he really was efficient behind his counter. He got the orders from either walk up customers, or Fyte as she tended those at the tables. From there he steamed milk, frothed cream, brewed espresso, and mixed everything before handing it fresh and steaming. It was a smooth system, he hardly kept anyone waiting.

Then came the announcement that made him jump. Above him, Tsukiko yelled for group participation. And since he was an employee, he often humored her on these small things. Stumbling to a halt, he handed the last finished drink before waiting for the signal.

It wasn't really much, to join in with the crowd of voices. He howled like the rest and he couldn't help the smile that lit his face, because of it. Sometimes doing childish things helps relieve the stress of being an adult. He liked that here, it didn't always have to be serious business and demanding school. Tsukiko often encouraged them to enjoy themselves, but he often brushed that aside. He didn't have time to enjoy things when he had classes to keep up in. But he tried and that's what mattered.

"Arrroo!" he howled from his counter.

User ImageFinishing the order, Fyte bustled around the shop, taking orders and passing them onto Nemo when required. He really was quite the hard worker, once he gets his rhythm going. she observed with a secret smile on her face.

She couldn't help but laugh when the announcement came on. Even though she didn't want to go on air and talk to the DJ himself, the contest in itself sounded fun; she had always wanted to call in on a radio contest. Watching Tsuki eagerly, she waited for the count down. They're probably definitely not expecting this to happen… she giggled, giddy with anticipation. When she gave the ok, Fyte let her best howl rip.

"AWROOOOOOOO!!!!!!" It was most likely drowned out by the sound of everyone else's voice, but Fyte couldn't help but laugh after it was all over. She let out a loud "CHEE-HOOO!" at the end of her laughing fit, causing several other students to cheer too. Trying to calm down, she looked to Tsukiko to see what the result was.

Several of the contestants were, as usual, very sad little people. They yowled and cried and roared, but it was pitiful by any standard. Palian had to turn his mic off at one point, just so he didn't openly laugh on the air. That was considered rude and he knew he would get grief if he did.

Then came the next call, his supervisor informed him it was a girl, and he opened the mic to receive. The sound that burst forth from the line made him jump in surprise. It was unexpected, to say the least. Such a sound, it was a combination of a large group by his reckoning. A cacophony of high and low voices raised in odd harmony. When it ended, he was silent a moment. The air was filled with the silent static before breaking under a sharp clap.

"Now that, everyone, is how a pack howls. I think we have a clear winner tonight," he said smoothly as he continued to clap albeit a bit softer.

"Who is our alpha of this group? The girl who called?" he asked into the open line that still connected with the contestant. He looked at the notes his supervisor sent, the name read Tsukiko.

"Ah, Tsukiko. Congratulations. If you would, I'd be honored to have you make an appearance on my show. Stay on the line and we'll get your info," he announced.

"What an interesting turnout," he chuckled softly as he transferred the line back to his supervisor. The man would make sure we got all the info we needed to set up the guest speaking.

"Thanks for playing with us tonight. We'll be right back after a word from our sponsors. This is DJ Night Owl with the Night Life, here on K.I.D.K."

Bringing the phone to her ear as she tried to stop her own laughter. Turning off her speaker she tried her best to be serious. Brushing her bangs behind her ear as she spoke to the supervisor. Thanking them one last time after she gave them her info. Everyone one looked at her. Giggling she cheered again causing another uproar. Wiping a few stray tears from laughing so hard she made her way back down the stairs. People patted her back and regulars asked for shout outs. Which she promise to do her best to do. Passing a certain table she wrapped her arms around a certain blonde's neck.

"Haha I caught you!!" She laughed and looked at the redhead across from the blonde. "Make sure to go easy on him tonight pretty please, I've very grateful to him tonight." The blonde laugh and pulled away from her to ruffle her hair.
"Anything for my little sis after all," he chuckled as Tsukiko gave him a face before pulling away."Tsukiko rolled her eyes and went back to the counter after thanking Fyte and Nemo for their help. Making a note to do extra work before she went on the show so it would be easier on her employes.

Heading back to the back she began to put the baked goods away so they would be fresh in the morning. Setting her doughs to rise for the things she couldn't make tonight. Wondering if the show was broadcasted over the internet, she was sure her niece and nephew would love to hear her voice....then again she didn't think her brother would let them stay up this late. Oh well she'd try calling anyway.

Honestly though she was kinda excited, she had never been on the radio before. Laughing she went out to the front counter to help Nemo. The heavy crowed was over, and it really was getting time to close up shop, still there where always those who waited last minute. People came up asking her different questions. Ryo even came up before he left and asked if she was excited to finally meet the DJ since she played his show so often in the show. "I'm sure some fangirl part of me is, I mean hey its a new adventure for me. I just worry I won't have anything to talk to him about. I mean I own a coffee shop how interesting is that." She laughed and he joined in.

Tsukiko knew that Ryo knew she was a very interesting person. After all she was an ex-model, she played piano and some guitar. Some singing, bit she was getting rusty on all those things. Still those where things she kept to herself mostly. Being a somewhat private person, that or she hadn't found the right person to open up to yet.

User ImageOnce she heard the result, Fyte cheered even louder than she had before. When her friend eventually came over to the counter, Fyte slapped her a high five. Grinning back to Tsukiko, she merely gave a 'no problem' and a thumbs up to the girl.

As the excitement died down, Fyte began to clean up, taking various cups and plates to the back to be washed and wiping tables. When the students began to leave, Fyte extended her duties to placing chairs upside down on tables so that it would be easier to sweep the floor. Grabbing the broom and dustpan, she began her cleaning rounds, making sure to sweep every nook and cranny. If there was anything she hated in the world, rats and cockroaches were among the top things on her list. In fact, she had accidentally freaked out one day and had to beg Nemo to kill a really big roach. Not exactly her best day. Thinking back, Fyte shuddered, and resumed her sweeping with a vigor. Once done, she hung the broom back on its hook and went in the back to find her roomie. "Tsuki, are you going back now? If not I can wait for you."

Tsukiko looked up from the dishes. "Give me just another minute I'm almost done. Has Nemo left yet, he's in the building right across the street...or was it the one next door....either way ask if he was to walk with us to." Tsukiko smiled, she was being mischievous. During work she didn't bother them, treated them like a boss was suppose to. Once it was time to close up, she didn't have to be so....boss like. Not that she even considered herself a boss, she treated her workers with more respect then anyone. They where her friends after all especially Fyte. Finishing the last few dishes she dried them and put them away quickly. Getting her keys she locked up the back doors and went and got her purse.

"Okay I'm ready when you are. Thanks for waiting on me." Tsukiko didn't mind walking by herself, but she didn't like Fyte walking alone. Even though it was a college town mostly stuff happened all the time. Not often, but why take chances. Fyte was becoming like a sister to Tsukiko. They had always seemed to get along since they've roomed together. Her heart would break if something ever happened to the girl. Making a mental note to ask Nemo to walk her home when she went on the radio. That or she would ask her to take the short bus ride home. The coffee shop wasn't that far from the apartments, and it was easier to walk then wait on the bus. "Its been an interesting day hasn't it, I'm not going to lie I'm kinda excited to be meeting DJ Night Owl, I mean we listen to him every night almost." Though sometimes the DJ got a little to crude and it kinda just angered her so she didn't like listening to him then. When she goes on the show she just hopes he's not in that kind of mood.

((I wanted to just do a short post so either one of you can post next.))

The rest of the evening went smoothly, as most of them did. As the shop began its normal trickle before closing, he turned to all his equipment and sighed contentedly. Before beginning his cleanup process, he stopped long enough to run a mop along the floor after Fyte swept.

After so short a time it had already become habit. They worked in tandem to get everything prepped for the next day, an unspoken harmony that he knew was rare to find. It made him cherish the time he spent with them, knowing that it was a special relationship. A mixture of friends and coworkers. A sense of family that he hadn't known in a long time.

Nemo often wondered about the two girls he saw day in and day out, but worried it would seem prying to ask them. Everyone had their secrets, their own past dramas. And if it was anything like his, he couldn't blame them for not sharing and he wouldn't be the one to bring it up. Some things weren't worth bringing to light, unless they came back to take a bite.

Wiping all the counters with a damp cloth, he looked at everything in his station, checking off his nightly cleaning list. One part of taking pride in ones work is to keep it clean and orderly, or so he always told himself. All the surfaces were sparkling, the empty cartons disposed of and the brewer scrubbed. With a nod of satisfaction, he then realized he heard Tsukiko's voice.

"Yea, I'm still here. Give me one sec and I'll be out with ya," he said as he did one last wipe along the front counter and tucked the rag in the bin beneath.

"Counters clean, milks put away, all the syrups have been capped, the trash is put out, the til counted, the floor mopped, the dishes cleaned or tossed in back. Looks like I'm done," he murmured to himself with a self satisfactory grin.

Nemo darted out from behind his area and slipped out the door just as Tsukiko was locking up. He ducked beneath her arm with an apologetic nod. He hated holding everyone up, but knew that his boss wouldn't really scold him for it. Tsukiko was one of those people who worked to make sure everyone was happy and healthy. He knew she tried to hide it, but he felt like a little troublesome brother to her big well meaning sister. He'd never had a sister, but the indulgent look she always gave him thought that if he did, that would be what she would do.

He fell silently into step with the two girls. He didn't often worry about small talk, it broke his constant inner train of thought. However, that didn't mean he didn't mind talking if asked something directly. As a kid, he was overly shy and took extreme measures to stay away from others. As an adult, he'd mellowed a bit and made it a personal goal to break himself of the habit. It became easier with these two, though he'd never admit it. Some things never change after all.
