Perfect, absolutely perfect. Everything was finally ready. A number of nights and days had passed, but Athera's patience endured and the sun dried out her ingredients exactly as she'd expected. Mortar and pestle in hand, she ground each of them individually—black pepper, chili pepper, thyme, cumin. They went into separate glass containers with cute little cork stoppers. Athera looked endlessly pleased with herself.
"He should be here sooooon," the lavenderblood sing-songed to herself. 'He' was her hivemate and (essentially) her brother, but that never stopped Athera from using him as a guinea pig.
After setting out a few small plastic bowls and pushing a springy chair up to the table, her preparations were complete. Hands at her hips, she looked around her garden room, puffed up and proud. The very same black pepper plant that birthed the fruit she'd dried for her experiment—along with everything else, of course—was nearby, and she gave it a look like a lusus might, soft and affectionate. Ah, how she loved each and every one of her plants.

"No, Cyn! Just wait 'til I tell you." With a faint frown, she watched his hand retract. Didn't matter how slow he went, she could wait all night. "It's important 'cause you might mess up my data and stuff if you touch it before I say so."
Taking her eyes off of him was a bad idea and Athera knew it, so she did an awkward backwards walk to retrieve a nearby stool, then scurried quickly to the side of the table opposite the silverblood. Standing on the stool let her see the entire work area clearly and she rubbed her hands together, satisfied, before finally picking up one of the bottles.
"You can't eat this stuff, okay? I'm warning you. You won't like it." Popping each cork off one by one and depositing them in her pocket for good measure, she poured a bit of powder in each bowl. One had a mixture of everything, one had three ingredients, one had two, and the final had nothing but black pepper. That one was first test, the black pepper bowl, and she held it out for Cynril to take.
"You can hold it, but don't drop it. If you do I won't let you hold them anymore. Now you just gotta smell it, okay? Like, really smell it." Athera grabbed a little notebook and pen, eager to record his reaction.

Okay so being slow didn't help. Cynril pouted and removed his arm from the table. Athera clearly had her eyes on him as he was going to reach out for the flasks again when she turned around; only that she didn't. Damn. Cynril pretended as if he was stretching and totally not wanting to grab anything. Argh! What would it take for the other mutant to turn around for a moment?!
With a pout, the child took the bowl handed to him and immediately looked at the powder. It appeared to be black which was somewhat cool to stare at. Then she warned him NOT to eat it. Oh, so that's how things were know?
Besides his overly curious nature came his 'I don't need to do what you say attitude'. He was a big boy, sort of. He knew what he could do and he clearly didn't want to do what she said. "M'kay." He took a good whiff at the powder, only to sneeze a few moment after. "It smells f-funny..." Cynril rubbed his nose. It smelt really strong. That part being over, Cynril proceeded to poke the powder with a finger and placed it in his mouth. Besides proving he could do what he wanted... Cyn was curious how it tasted. Oh this would be sweet, sweet, victory--
Oh how he regretted it. Setting the bowl on the table, Cynril tried his best to wipe the taste out of his tongue.
"Wh-what is this!?" He asked, wiping his tongue with his arm rigorously.

Ugh, really? Athera grimaced watching Cynril spit in the pot. A little pepper backwash wouldn't hurt the plant, but it was her baby—they all were—and she felt a bit overprotective. Even so, her patience held firm and she said nothing about it. Back to the task at hand.
"You like this one, huh?" she asked, pointing to the flask full of chili powder. The other bowls were full of mixtures, so she emptied the pepper bowl to the side and filled it with nothing but ground chili pepper instead. "It's pretty, but it's not gonna taste good by itself, too. It's spicy."
This time when Athera held the bowl out in her brother's direction, she didn't let go of it. "You can smell it, but I'm warning you not to eat it."
This was the last time she'd warn him. If he kept pulling these stunts, well, it was his own fault if he got burned.
