[Kindness] Between a Rock and a Hard Place [WS x Heart]

Fall was starting to hit Phonyland, and with it, the changing leaves, chilly mornings and the wilting grass. Wabi Sabi thoroughly enjoyed fall;
the changing of seasons meant that the previous season had to end. He admired the way his hooves made a delightful crunch on the grass, how it left the stalks bent where normally they would spring back. He watched the leaves tumble along the ground, leaving bits of themselves along the way.

His reverence of the scenery was interrupted by a steady noise. Wabi's ear twitched back and forth, trying to locate the direction. He wasn't sure what he was hearing, but it sounded..distressing.

He started walking in circles, waiting for his ears to point him in the right direction. When he finally picked up where it was coming from, the colt wasted no time in pushing his way through a few bushes to find the culprit.

What he found alarmed him. A mother rabbit was standing nearby, several babies huddled close to her sides. They were staring at the base of a tree,
looking scared. One of the young ones had decided to try and crawl under a slightly raised tree root, and had gotten himself stuck, his back end facing Wabi while he cried piteously.

"Oh you poor thing!" exclaimed, dropping down to inspect the problem. "How how on earth did you get in there?"

Wabi's head shot up as he looked at Joy. "Oh hello." he said, momentary outburst quelled. "I was walking nearby and I heard a sound." he placed his hoof on the root and looking down at the fluffy rabbit tail twitching underneath.

"I think this one's stuck." went on to say, tapping the root lightly. It seemed pretty solid. "I was just trying to come up with a way to get him out when you showed up." He tried to pet the bunny's ears to soothe him, as his father often did with them, but it looked to have the opposite effect on the bunny: the small creature hissed and tried to look ferocious.

Wabi drew back his hoof, looking at Joy and shrugging.

Wabi quickly backed away, horror coming across his face as his hooves scrabble backwards. "H-he could die of fright!?" the colt exclaimed, losing all of his normally calm demeanor. Creatures really did that!?

He stood close to Joy, not wanting to cause the little thing any more discomfort.
He felt guilty about trying to pet it. "I'm sorry little bunny." he said quietly, while Joy examined the issue from afar through her camera lens. It was a smart idea:
she was able to see what was stuck without actually touching it.

When she asked for his help, he seemed troubled. "Are you sure you'd like me to help? I did cause him extra grief already..." he rubbed the back of his leg with a hoof, feeling the guilt again.

Wabi blinked as his nose was booped, then wiggled it similar to a rabbit.

He looked at the screen closely, tracing the root line with his eye. It was delightfully twisted, and he felt a little sad to be destroying it's lopsided beauty.
But what was beauty when there was a life in danger? The deep outweighed the superficial.

He smiled "I can do it." he said, feeding off of her confidence. She was so sure of herself, and of him. How did she do that?

Wabi waited for her to start before he too crept forward, eyes never leaving the trapped rabbit. He tapped at the ground near the root, and when it didn't send the creature into shock, he dug carefully around the root, finding that it wasn't too deep before it twisted back upwards and out a few feet away. He took Joy's pauses as reason for him to also pause: holding his breath while the bunny let out his.

Before long the root was exposed enough that he could get his teeth around it.


"Joy." the colt whispered, "I could try to pull the root now."

The root came out painfully slow, crunching dirt noises accompanying it every inch. Finally, with a shower of clumps of dirt and tiny roots, it popped free, and the rabbit streaked free, a blur in a cloud of dust. Wabi rolled backwards, letting out a whoop of glee even as he was coated in dirt.

He rolled onto his side, then to his feet, shaking bits of things out of his hair. "We..did...it." he said slowly, bringing his heart rate back down. The fear for the critter was being replaced with elation the longer he sat there.

"Thank you...for your help..."

What a strange thing, this foal showing up out of nowhere and deciding to help. How kind!
